This inventionrelates to a combined holder and ash receptacle for cigarettes or the like.

An object of the invention is to provide a holder having greater facilities for retaining the ash during smoking than with devices heretofore known, and'with this object in view the invention consists broadly in a combined holder and ash receptacle for cigarettes or the like comprising means for supporting a cigarette or the like, means for receiving ash during smoking, and means disposed about said cigarette supporting means for receiving ash when the holder is in a tilted position.

The invention also provides a combined holder and ash receptacle for cigarettes or the like comprising a tray-like member for receiving ash during smoking attached at its rear end to a hollow cup-shaped member which forms a recess for receiving ash when the holder is in a tilted position. This hollow cup-shaped member preferably forms an annular recess around a tubular member which is adapted to receive a cigarette 'at one end and a mouthpiece at the other.

The tray-like member is preferably provided with a forward end cap or like device for retaining ash when the holder is in a tilted or inclined position and the tray-like member is preferably pivotally secured to the cup-shaped member so that the two members may be swung apart in order to facilitate lighting the cigarette.

These and other aspects and features of the invention will become apparent from the following detailed description which is given in con junction with the accompanying drawing, wherein:--

Figures 1 and 2 show side and plan views respectively of a cigarette holder constructed in accordance with the invention, while Figures 3 and 4 show sectional side and end views respectively of the same cigarette holder when in the lighting position.

Referring now to the drawing, the cigarette holder consists of a tubular member I carrying a mouthpiece 2 at one end and being adapted to carry a cigarette 3 at the other end, the interior of the forward end preferably being tapered and being provided with a screw thread l6 as shown in Figure 3 in order that a cigarette when mounted may be firmly held in position. This tubular member I also carries a cup-like member 4 which is of frusto-conical shape and emerges from the end of the tubular member so as to form a tapered recess 5 around the tubular member l, the walls of the cup-like member 4 extending slightly beyond the end of the tubular member I so as to surround the end of a cigarette mounted in the holder. The cup-shaped member 4 carries at its open end a tray-like member 6 of semi-cylindrical shape which in order to facilitate the lighting of. the cigarette is pivoted to the lower edge of the cup-shaped member by means of the hinge 1. In order to facilitate the fitting of the hinge l, the cup-shaped member 4 and the tray-like member 6 may be slightly flattened at their adjoining edges. The tray-like member 6 is held in its normal position as shown in Figures 1 and 2 by a pair of retaining arms 8 which act as leaf springs pressing against the inner sides of the cup-shaped member 4, these arms being provided with stops 9 for engaging with holes or apertures Ill in the walls of the cupshaped member 4. When it is desired to light a cigarette mounted in the holder the stops 9 are pressed inwardly, thus releasing the retaining arms 8 and allowing the tray-like member 6 to be swung downwards into the position shown in Figure 3, where movement is arrested by the stops 9 engaging with a pair of inwardly projecting shoulders ll on the edge'of the cupshaped member l.- The free end of the tray-like member 6 is provided with a hollow cap I2 for collecting any ash if the holder is downwardly tilted, while if the holder is tilted in the opposite direction the ash is collected by the cupshaped member 4.

The cap l2 may be provided with a precious stone E3 or any other decorative ornament as desired.

The mouthpiece 2 is screwed into the end of the tubular member I by means of a threaded cylindrical portion" M which may 'either be formed integrally with the mouthpiece as shown, or may be formed as a separate entity and firmly screwed or otherwise secured to the forward end of the mouthpiece, and in order to permit separate rotation as an adjunct between the mouthpiece and the rest of the holder without the mouthpiece becoming loose a sleeve ring 15 is provided for gripping the extending sides of the cup-shaped member l, when the mouthpiece 2 is screwed into position.

This sleeve ring I5 is independently mounted on the end of the mouthpiece 2 by means of an internal thread so that after the mouthpiece has been screwed into the desired position the sleeve ring may be independently screwed up until it makes gripping contact with the outer walls of the cup-shaped member 4. In order to promote cflicient contact between the sleeve ring and the walls of the cup-shaped member 4 the sleeve ring l5 may if desired be of frusto-conical shape.

The mouthpiece 2 is preferably made of some heat-resistive material such as vulcanite, while the remaining portions of the holder may be made of any hard material such as compressed asbestos, wood, amber, bone, porcelain, vulcanite, tortoiseshell, a precious metal, a phenol condensation product or other composition and may be suitably coloured and decorated as desired.

A holder constructed in accordance with this invention has the advantage of enabling a cigarette to be smoked almost at any time without scattering the ash since the ash on falling from the cigarette will be collected by the tray underneath it when the holder is in a substantially horizontal position and will be directed into one or otherof the cup-shaped members when the holder is tilted with the mouthpiece pointing either upwards or downwards, while rotation of the mouthpiece relatively to the rest of the holder has the effect of enabling the tray to be retained under the cigarette even when the smokers head is in an inclined position, the added rigidity provided by the independent sleeve ring having the advantage of providing a staple grip for the tray, and preventing the mouthpiece from becoming loose. Furthermore, by mounting the tray so that it may be downwardly swung out of its normal position when desired there is no difliculty in lighting a cigarette after it has been mounted in position in the holder.

While the combined holder and ash receptacle constructed in accordance with the invention is primarily intended for cigarettes it is to be understood that it may be readily employed or adapted for small size cigars, cheroots or the like.

Having now described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. A combined holder and ash receptacle for cigarettes or the like comprising a tubular member for supporting a cigarette or the like, a hollow cup-shaped member secured to and forming an annular recess around said tubular member, a tray-like member for receiving ash during smoking pivoted to the forward end of said cupshaped member and a resilient device attached to said tray-like member and co-operating with said cup-shaped member for retaining the traylike member in position during smoking.

2. A combined holder and ash receptacle for cigarettes or the like comprising a tubular member for supporting a cigarette or the like, a hollow cup-shaped member secured to and forming an annular recess around said tubular member, a tray-like member for receiving ash during smoking hinged to the forward end of said cup-shaped member and a plurality of leaf springs attached to the rear end of said tray-like member and provided with projecting members for engaging with apertures in said cup-shaped member for holding the tray-like member in position during smoking.

3. A combined holder and ash receptacle for cigarettes or the like comprising a tubular member for supporting a cigarette or the like, a hollow cup-shaped member secured to and forming an annular recess around said tubular member, a tray-like member for receiving ash during smoking hinged to the forward end of said cupshaped member and a plurality of leaf springs attached to the rear end of said tray-like member and provided with projecting members for engaging with apertures in said cup-shaped member for holding the tray-like member in its normal position during smoking and stop members on said cup-shaped member for engaging with said projecting members when said. tray-like member is swung out of its normal position.

4. A combined holder and ash receptacle for cigarettes or the like comprising a tubular member for supporting a cigarette or the like, a hollow cup-shaped member secured to and forming an annular recess around said tubular member, a tray-like member for receiving ash during smoking attached to said cup-shaped member, a mouthpiece detachably secured to said tubular member and an auxiliary sleeve member screwed to the forward end of said mouthpiece and engaging with the walls of said cup-shaped membei thereby providing an additional grip between said tubular member and said mouthpiece when the latter is separately rotated.

5. A combined holder and ash receptacle according to claim 4 wherein said cup-shaped mem ber and said sleeve member are of frusto-conical shape and are adapted to engage one within the other.

6. A combined holder and ash receptacle for cigarettes or the like comprising a tubular member for supporting a cigarette or the like, a mouthpiece detachably secured to the rear end of said tubular member, a hollow cup-shaped member also secured to and forming a tapered annular recess around said tubular member, a traylike member pivotally secured to the forward end of said cup-shaped member, an end cap secured to the forward end of said tray-like member, a resilient device attached to said tray-like member and co-operating with said cup-shaped member for retaining the tray-like member in position during smoking, a stop device on said cupshaped member for limiting the pivotal movement of said tray-like member and an auxiliary sleeve member screwed to the forward end of said mouthpiece and engaging with the walls of said cup-shaped member.

A combined holder and ash receptacle for cigarettes or the like comprising a tubular member for supporting a cigarette or the like, a hollow cup-shaped member of frusto-conical shape secured to and forming an annular recess around said tubular member, a tray-like member for receiving ash during smoking secured to the forward end of said cup-shaped member, a mouthpiece screwed into the rear end of said tubular member, and an auxiliary sleeve member of frusto-conical shape screwed to the forward end of said mouthpiece and fitting over and gripping the rear end of said cup-shaped member, whereby said mouthpiece may be rotated relatively to the tray-like member without becoming loosened, thereby enabling said tray-like member to be so positioned as to cause the ash falling from the cigarette to be collected when the smoker is in a reclining position.

3. A combined holder and ash receptacle for cigarettes or the like comprising a tubular member for supporting a cigarette or the like, a mouthpiece detachably secured to the rear end of said tubular member, a hollow cup-shaped member also secured to and forming a tapered annular recess around said tubular member, a tray-like member pivotally secured to the forward end of said cup-shaped member, an end cap secured to the forward end of said tray-like member, a plurality of leaf springs attached to said tray-like member and cooperating with said cupshaped member for retaining the tray-like member in position during smoking, a stop device on said cup-shaped member for limiting the pivotal movement of said tray-like member and an auxiliary sleeve member screwed to the forward end of said mouthpiece and engaging with the walls of said cup-shaped member.
