This invention relates to garments for women and has special reference to a girdle provided with hose supporters.

One important object of the present invention l is to provide a garment of this class whereinmeans of novel character exists which effectively prevents rolling up of the garment.

A second important object of the invention is to provide a girdle in which the construction is such that novel means exist therein which effectively eliminates strain` on hosiery when worn with garters and which may be worn with or without garters as may be desired by the wearer.

A third important object of the invention is to provide a novel arrangement of shaped material in such a garment, the material being so shaped as to control the distribution of flesh without causing bulging of leg tissue and preventing tautness from garters when used with the garment.

A fourth important object of the invention is to provide a girdle having a novel spacing between the lower parts of certain of the strips of shaped material whereby comfortable freedom against a sense of tightness and heat is attained without injuriously affecting the manner in which the garment supports the wearer.

A fth important object of the invention is to provide certain novel arrangements of elastic gores, the arrangement being such as to allow freedom in stooping and sitting, comfort against body heat, and being hygienically advantageous.

A sixth important object of the invention is to so construct a girdle as to provide a novel arrangement of elastic belt and vertical stays whereby the flesh will be held in proper place without discomfort arising from the stay ends pressing against the lower ribs of the wearer.

A seventh important object of the invention is to provide a novel garter attaching means so arranged that garters may be attached to and detached from the garment with great ease, the garter supporting element being so arranged as not to interfere with the elastic members providing leg attachments for the lower parts of the garment.

With the above and other objects in view, as will be presently apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully de.- scribed, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and:-

Fig. l is a side elevation of the girdle with thc material laid fiat, the view disclosing the left side of the girdle and disclosing the releasably secured vertical edges whereby the garment may be opened for application to and removal from the body of the user.

Fig. 2 is a front view of the garment with the material laid flat.

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail oi' the lower median portion of the back of the girdle. the view being broken away to show certain elastic means there used.

Fig. 4 is an inside face view of one of the elastic leg bands used herein and disclosing the garter attaching means.

In the embodiment of the invention as here shown there is provided a front section having an upper abdomen covering portion I0 from which extends downwardly a pair of diverging front leg portions II. The section I0 has straight upper lateral edges I2 and I3, the edge I3 being on tht` left side of the garment as worn and constituting one of the detachable edges of the garment. The edges I2 and I3 diverge downwardly. The outer edge Il of each leg portion merges at its upper edge with the edge I2 or edge I3 as the case may be and is curvilinear so that it produces the proper t of the respective leg portion on the outer side. The inner edge I5 of leg portions I I are connected at their upper ends by horizontal transverse edge I6 and extend divergingly downwardly therefrom. In the space between the upper parts of the edges I5 is fitted a transversely elastic webbing I1 which is secured at its respective edges by stitch lines I8.

Secured to the edge I2 by stitching I9 is the front edge of a long transversely elastic web 20. Detachably secured to the edge I3 by suitable detachable connections, here illustrated by hook and eyes devices 2 I, is the front edge of a second long transversely elastic web 22. 23 has its upper edge secured by stitch lines 24 to the lower end of the respective webbing 2li and 22, the stitching 24 being arranged to cause slight shirring oi' the material of the sections 23 so as not to interfere with the lateral stretching of the An outer leg portion i elastic webbing. The edges I4 and the forward edges of the portions 23 are free from each other. The rear edge of each of the webs 20 and 22 are secured to the forward edge 29 of the upper part of a forward side section 21 by stitching 28. Each section 21 has a depending leg portion 29 the forward edge of which is free from the rear edge 3i o1' a respective section 23.

Secured to the upper part of the rear edge of each section 21 by stitching 32 is a rear side section 33 having a depending leg covering portion 34 the forward edge 35 of which is free from the rear edge 36 of the respective portion 29. The inner edge 31 of each section 33 is attached by stitching 38 to a respective side edge o1' a back section 39. On each side of the garment the portions Ii, 23, 29 and 34 have their lower edges connected in slightly laterally spaced relation to the upper edge of an elastic band 49 the ends of which are detachably connected by any suitable means such as the button and button hole connections 4I. 'I'he elastic leg bands 40 are connected to the several portions by stitching 42, the material of the sections being shirred or gathered at the lower edges so as to permit the necessary free expansion of the bands 49.

The stitchings 32 are arranged in parallel rows to form pockets for stay members 43. Similar pockets for front stays 44 are formed by stitching 45 At the bottom edge of the back section 39 is an elastic strip 46 to the bottom edge of which the material of the section 40 is gathered by stitching 41. The ends of this strip 46 are attached to the sections 33 by the stitching at the inner edges of these sections.

The upper edges of all the sections, except those formed by the elastic webs 20 and 22, are gathered to elastic belt members 43 by the stitching 49, the upper edges of the webs 20 and 22 and the several members thus form a belt which surrounds the waist when the garment is worn.

Secured to the inner face of each leg band 40 is a fabric strap having alternate gathered or shlrred portions 50 and free slack portions 5I, the portions 50 being held to the leg band by stitching 52. Garter loops 53 (Fig. 6) may be attached to the free portions 5i. shown but it is obvious that the free portions 5I may be located wherever desired on the band 40 and as many garter loops may be used as is desired or found convenient.

It will now be seen that when the garment is worn the elastic waist belt secures it rmly in place without unduly resisting movements of the wearer. 'I'he webs 29 and 22 t snugly over the hips and prevent unsightly bulging of the esh at such locations. The leg portions are securely held from rolling up by the leg bands 49 yet, because these portions are laterally free from each other, the movements of stooping or sitting may be accomplished without discomfort or inconvenience. Because Athe garters are attached to the leg bands 40 no extra stress is produced on the hose when stooping or sitting and yet there is proper support afforded the hose at all times.

There has thus been provided a simple and eflicient garment of the kind described and `for the objects specied.

Itis obvious that changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the essential constructive tea- But one of these loops ishere tures. It is not therefore desired to conne the invention to the form here shown and described but it is desired to include all forms which come within the scope of the appended claims.

What is claimed, is:

1. In a girdle, a front section having a bifurcated lower portion forming a pair of diverging leg covering members, a gore of transversely elastic webbing secured between the upper portions of the leg covering members, a back section, side sections at each side of the girdle connecting the lateral edges of the upper parts of the front and back sections, a band of elastic webbing at the lower edge of said back sections, the side sections at each sidev of the front section consisting of long strips of laterally elastic webbing, said elastic side sections having depending leg covering members attached to their lower ends, the remaining side sections having depending portions forming leg covering members, and a. pair of elastic leg bands, the leg covering members at each side of the girdle being connected in spaced and gathered relation to a respective band.

2. In a girdle, a front section having a bifurcated lower portion forming a pair of diverging leg covering members, a gore of transversely elastic webbing secured between the upper portions of the leg covering members, a back section, side sections at each side of the girdle connecting the lateral edges of the upper parts of the front and back sections, a band of elastic webbing at the lower edge of said back sections, the side sections at each side of the front section consisting of long strips of laterally elastic webbing, said elastic side sections having depending leg covering members attached to their lower ends, the remaining side sections having depending portions forming leg covering members, a pair of elastic leg bands, the leg covering members at each side of the girdle being connected in spaced and gathered relation to a respective band, elastic belt means connecting the upper ends of the elastic side sections and having the upper edges of the remaining side sections and the front and back sections stitched thereto.

3. In a girdle, a front section having a bifurcated lower portion forming a pair of diverging leg covering members, a gore of transversely elastic webbing secured between the upper portions of the leg covering members, a back section, side sections at each side of the girdle connecting the lateral edges of the upper parts of the front and back sections, a band of elastic webbing at the lower edge of said back sections, the side sections at each side of 'the front section consisting of long strips of laterally elastic webbing, said elastic side sections having depending leg covering members attached to their lower ends, the remaining side sections having depending portions forming leg covering members, a pair of elastic bands, the leg covering members at each side of the girdle being connected in spaced and gathered relation to a respective band, elastic belt means connect. ing the upper ends of the elastic side .sections and having the upper edges of the remaining side sections and the front and back sections stitched thereto, and stays attached in upright laterally spaced relation to the front and back sections and terminating at their upward ends in downwardly spaced relation from the elastic belt means.
