The present invention "pertains tony-shuttle looms,and has more particular reference to the shuttle picking mechanism of such looms.
Looms ofthe type to which my invention pertains commonly include a reciprocating lay, a :pickerstick carried by the lay, acam shaft exitending'widthwise of the loom and having a pick cam revolving therewith in a vertical plane,- and mechanism operated by the pick cam to impart -the shuttle picking'motion to the pickerstick. :.The picking mechanism generally used prior to the presentginventioni included-a pick shaft of the'vertical'pbell 'crank type positioned with its .:axis horizontal and at right angles to the cam "shaft," one arm-of thebell'crank cooperating with the-pick cam and the other-arm thereof-being connected toithe picker stick through a lug strap. Suchpriorrmechanism is 'subject to the disadvantage that the required angular relation of connected *parts "is-conducive of .ineificiency of the mechanism and causes considerableundesirable "end thrust on r the :pick shaft andcam shaft.
An :object-ofithe presentdnvention is? to pro- =vide in a loomhavinga lay, rpicker stick and pick cam-as-:aforesaid,t;anovel mechanism for transmitting :motion from' the pick cam to the picker stick, which-mechanism;shall" include a 'pick lever "positioned 'in the ":plane 'of the pick :cam and ahorizontalpellcrankghaving a'ver- -ticalw axis, so "constructed and" :positioned as to operate-efficiently"and without undesirable end thrust.
.The foregoing and other objects-of the invention are conveniently accomplished in the :preferred embodimentyherein disclosed. Suchprefer-red embodiment is illustrated on the :accompanying drawings, of which:

as shown, differs from lug straps heretofore used,
in that it comprises a rigid link having a universal or 'ball-and-socket connection l3 with the lug strap support and '25 a similar'connection I3 link.
The lug strap I2, and thereby the picker stick, is operated by a novel mechanism including a bell crank lever M which is mounted for oscil- "'3 lation about an approximately vertical axis and is provided with approximately. horizontalangularly related arms I5 and IS. The axisof'oscillation of this bell crank is the axis of a stud I! fixed in a stand 18. The stand I8 is suitably "35 fixed to a supporting member I!) carried by the loom sidel. The stud I1 is positioned rearat the inner end of the wardly from the plane of the lay 3 and picker stick 6, between the lay and the cam shaft 9, H and also inwardly'of the loom from the. picker '40 stick.
The arm l5 of the bell'crank lever l4 extends from the axis of the lever forwardly to thevertical plane in which the picker stick 6 moves and terminates at a point inwardly from the picker stick and below the level of the lug. strap support H thereon. The arm l5 in oscillating about the stud l1 moves between the'solid line position'of Fig. 3 and the position represented In its mid-position, the* picker stick, and the-construction is such that the arm throughout its movement remains quite close to such normal position. It will be noted that the stud I! as shown on the drawings is inclined to the vertical, and the plane in which arm l5 moves is not quite horizontal, but is inclined slightly so that the end of the arm is always below the level of the lug strap support il l.
The arm N5 of the bell crank lever 14 extends from the hub of the lever inwardly, at a right angle to the arm IS. The arm l6 terminates at a point in front of, but below, the pick cam 23. The bell crank lever is oscillated by means on gaging the arm I6 and operated by the pick cam. The pick cam revolves in a vertical plane, it being fixed to the cam shaft 9 in any usual manner.
The particular cam-operated means for oscillating the bell crank lever l4 shown on the drawings is not essential to the invention in some of its aspects. I do, however, prefer to use the particular means shown, which comprises a pick lever 2| and a link 22 positioned and operating substantially in the vertical plane containing the pick cam.
The lever 2 I, as shown, oscillates on a horizontal axis which is parallel to the cam shaft 9. To this end the lever may be pivotally mounted on a stud 23 which is fixed in a bracket 24 on the loom side I. This lever has an upwardly and rearwardly extending cam follower arm 25 which engages the pick cam 20. The arm 25 may include a cam-engaging roller 25. The lever also has a depending arm 21 which is located in front of the pick cam. The bracket 24 carries a bumper 28 which is engaged by a stop 29 on the arm 25 to limit overthrow of the pick-lever.
The arm l6 of the bell crank lever 14 terminates substantially in horizontal alignment with and in front of the lower end of the depending arm 21 of the pick lever. The link 22 therefore extends substantially horizontally and is at all times at least approximately at a right angle to both the arm l6 and the arm 21. The link is connected to the lower end of the arm 2T by means of a suitable ball-and-socket connection 30 and is connected to the arm l6 by a similar connection 3|.
The operation of the mechanism will be obvious and need not be described in detail. It is noted, however, that connected parts of the mechanism are so related as to operate freely and efficiently without the undesirable end thrust and side thrust present in prior shuttle picking mechanisms.
Having fully disclosed the preferred embodiment of my invention, I claim:
1. A fly shuttle loom having a reciprocating lay, a picker stick carried by the lay, a pick cam revolving in a vertical plane, a pick lever oscillating on a horizontal axis in front of said cam, said lever having a cam follower arm engaging said cam and a depending arm, a bell crank lever 05- cillating on an approximately vertical axis, said bell crank lever having angularly related arms one of which extends approximately normal to the plane of movement of said pick lever and the other of which extends approximately normal to the plane of the picker stick, a link connecting said depending arm with the first said arm of said bell crank lever, and a lug strap connecting the other arm of said bell crank lever with the picker stick.
2. A fly shuttle loom having a reciprocating lay, a picker stick carried by the lay, a pick cam revolving on a horizontal axis which extends widthwise of the loom, a pick lever positioned'in the same vertical plane as said cam and oscillating on a horizontal axis parallel to the axis of said cam, said pick lever having a cam follower arm engaging said cam and a depending arm in front of said cam, a bell crank lever oscillating on an approximately vertical axis, said bell crank lever having angularly related arms one of which terminates substantially in horizontal alignment with the lower end of said depending arm and the other of which terminates approximately in the vertical plane of said picker stick, a link connecting said depending arm with the first said arm on said bell crank lever, and a lug strap connecting the said other arm of said bell crank lever with the picker stick.
3. A fly shuttle loom having a lay reciprocating on a horizontal rocker shaft, a substantially vertical picker stick carried by the lay, a lug strap support onv said picker stick intermediate the ends thereof, a bell crank lever mounted for oscillation about an approximately vertical axis located inwardly and rearwardly from said picker stick, said lever having angularly related arms one of which extends forwardly from said axis and terminates at a point below the level of said lug strap support, a lug strap connecting the forward end of said arm with said lug strap sup port, and cam operated means, engaging the other arm of said'bell crank lever, for oscillating said bell crank lever and thereby actuating said picker stick.
4. A fly shuttle loom having a lay reciprocating on a horizontal rocker shaft, a substantially vertical picker stick carried by the lay, a lug strap support on said picker stick intermediate the ends thereof, a cam shaft extending widthwise of the loom, a pick cam on said cam shaft, a bell crank lever mounted for oscillation about a vertical axis'located between said lay and said cam shaft and inwardly from said picker stick, said lever having angularly related arms one of which extends forwardly from said axis and terminates at a point approximately in the plane of said picker stick but inwardly from and below the level of said lug strap support, a lug strap connecting the forward end of said arm with said lug strap support, and means operated by said pick cam and engaging the other arm of said bell crank lever, for oscillating said bell crank lever and thereby actuating said picker stick.
.5. A fly shuttle loom having a lay reciprocating on a horizontal rocker shaft, a substantially vertical picker stick carried by the lay, a lug i strap support on said picker stick intermediate the ends thereof, a cam shaft extending widthwise of the loom, a pick cam fixed to said cam shaft and revolving in a vertical plane, a bell crank lever mounted for oscillation about a vertical axis located between said lay and said cam shaft and inwardly from said picker stick, said lever having angularly related arms one of which extends forwardly from said axis and terminates at a point inwardly from the picker stick but approximately in the plane thereof, a lug strap conmeeting the forward end of said arm with said lug strap support, the other arm of said bell crank lever extending inwardly of the loom from said axis and terminating at a point in front of said pick cam, and means operated by said pick cam and engaging said other arm of said bell crank lever for oscillating said lever to thereby actuate said picker stick.
6. A fly shuttle loom having a lay reciprocating on a horizontal rocker shaft, a substantially vertical picker stick carried by the lay, a lug strap support on said picker stick intermediate the ends thereof, a cam shaft extending widthwise of the loom, a pick cam fixed to said cam shaft and revolving in a vertical plane, a pick lever positioned in the same vertical plane as said cam and oscillating on a horizontal axis parallel to said cam shaft, said pick lever having a cam follower arm engaging said cam and 2, depending arm, a bell crank lever oscillating about a vertical axis located between said lay and said cam shaft and inwardly from said picker 10 stick, said bell crank lever having an arm extending forwardly to a point inwardly from and below said lug strap support, said bell crank lever having another arm extending inwardly to a point substantially in horizontal alignment with the lower end of said depending arm, a link connecting said depending arm with said inwardly extending arm, and a lug strap connecting said forwardly extending arm with said lug strap support.
