3 Claims.
This invention relates to a combination of polo or sport shirt and a support type of shorts knitted into a single garment, in contradistinction to being woven, and includes additional features which in their unification provide for all-way elasticity or complete freedom of movement to the wearer.
The garment is knitted in such fashion as to allow for a maximum elasticity transversely and diagonally, while full vertical elasticity is insured by the novel structural characteristics of the crotch-piece-the specific type of knitting taken into conjunction with the said crotch-piece allowing for an all-way stretch and precluding hikingup of the garment.
One embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. l is a frontal view of a portion of the figure of a man illustrating the application of the garment.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the rear of the figure of a man showing the manner in which the garment is donned.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary front elevation of the lower extremity of the garment and the pendant crotch-piece.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional perspective of one corner of the arcuate opening, taken along lines 4@ of Fig. 3, at the lower extremity of the garment illustrating one manner of securing the elastic, and Fig. 5 is an enlarged view showing the specific type of knitting employed.
Referring specifically to the drawing, the novel garment comprises a polo or sport shirt I and a support type of shorts 2. Shirt l is provided with a collar 3, an abbreviated opening 4 having suitable fasteners 5 and B, and sleeves l and 8. The lower extremity of the shirt merges into the support type of shorts 2, which is virtually a crotchpiece 9 having a wide rear portion l0 and a relatively narrow elongated portion II, with a rounded terminal edge I l, as exhibited in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
Opposite marginal edges of the crotch-piece have bindings l2 and 13 at a point extending from the inner end of portion H, which incorporate elastics I4 and l5the latter being illustrated by dotted lines.
Portion ll of the crotch-piece is illustrated as having an extra thickness of material l5 to serve as a reenforcement, although this reenforcement can be eliminated, if desired. Button holes l6, H and I8 are provided at the outer free end I! for complemental engagement with the buttons 19, 20 and 2| disposed equi-distantly along the binding 22 of the arcuate opening 23. With such arrangement less fabric is required and it is consequently cooler, besides affording a binding which effectively supports the buttons. Types of fasteners, other than buttons, may be employed.
As shown in Fig. 4 stitching 24 not only functions to secure button I9 to binding l2 but extends through elastic l4 and anchors same in place. And obviously, the'same scheme is carried out in connection with the diametrically opposite button 2|. Or, if preferred, the elastic in each binding l2 and I3 may be stitched adjacent its terminals-independently of the buttons orother fastenersto prevent their displacement.
The entire garment is knitted in one piece, and in the embodiment of the invention depicted in the drawing, the wales of the fabric are disposed transversely and longitudinally. Note Fig. 5 wherein 25 designates the transverse wales and 26 the longitudinal wales. This type of knitting best provides for horizontal and diagonal elasticity.
When donning the garment the crotch-piece 9 is disconnected from shirt I, as in Fig. 3, the head inserted through the opening at the bottom and the shirt pulled over the body. If preferred, this operation may be expedited and a snug fit obtained by grasping and pulling downwardly on the crotch-piece.
With the crotch-piece in position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, i. e., the curved edge ll lying in approximate registry with the arcuate opening and fastened to the binding 22 thereof, bindings l2 and IS with their elastics l4 and I5 conform to a nicety with the curvature of the buttocks and upper extremities of the limbs, and primarily, because of the elasticity at these points combined with the equalization and centralization of the fastening means constituted by the button holes of the crotch-piece and buttons around the arcuate opening, there is presented an anchoring type of pivot which provides for vertical elasticity of the entire garment. This novel combination which makes for transverse, diagonal and vertical elasticity insures complete freedom of movement as well as prevents hiking-up of the garment and is ideally adapted for playing golf, tennis, riding, and other sports or games, and all-round wear.
In its broader aspects, the invention comprises not only the various means described, but equivalent means, for performing the recited functions. By way of example, the precise type of knitting may be varied. It is desired to reserve the right to eifectsuch changes and modifications as may come fairly within the scope of the appended claims.
1. A garment comprising a top having the form of a shirt and a bottom in the form of a crotch-piece, the bottom of the front of the shirt having an arcuate-like opening, the marginal edges of the crotch-piece and the opening having a binding, elastics disposed in the binding of the crotch-piece and terminating at said opening, and means for fastening the crotch-piece to the edge of said opening.
2. A garment comprising a top having the form of a shirt and a bottom in the form of a crotchpiece, the bottom of the front of the shirt having an arcuate-like opening, the marginal edges of the crotch-piece and the opening having a bind-
