Description

' 1). ZUERN & L. L. BEVAN. SELF INKING HAND PRESS.
PATENTED NOV. 2, 1858.
with the die (or type) C, and communicat' UNITED STATES DANL. ZUERN AND. L. L. BEVAN,
SELF-INKING Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DANIEL ZUERN and LEWIS L. BEVAN, both of Shamokin, in the county of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Stamping or Printing Letters, Cards, &c., called and designated The Self-Inking Hand and Post-Office Press; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature and character of our invention consists in the new combination and application of the lever and fulcrum, together with a self-acting finger or hook con nection, with a self-adjusting bed plate, in combination with a self-inking self acting roller, so as to secure by a single movement of the lever the inking, distributing of the ink (or reinking the roller,) the impression stamping or printing of the card, letter, paper, or other material stamped, impressed or printed, and the delivery thereof when stamped or printed.
This machine is to be constructed of iron or any other metal at the option of the constructor, excepting the movable bed which receives and delivers the card, letter, or other article to be printed or stamped. This may be made of wood and gum or leather, or any other substance or compound substantially the same which will perform the same functions, and produce the same effect.
The annexed drawing which constitutes a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 represents a longitudinal (or side) elevation and Fig. 2 a transverse section, being referred to, what we claim will more fully and clearly appear.
A is the lever.
a is the fulcrum-pin.
B is a shaft with spiral spring connected ing the pressure from the lever, thereto.
D, is an ink roller. E, 1s a movable plate or bed which receives cards, letters, for printing or stamping.
F, is ink sponge for lnking roller.
AEN OF SHAMOKIN, PENNSYLVANIA.
HAND-PRESS.
21,997, dated November 2, 1858.
Gr, is an arm or lever connected with fulcrum and bar H. H connects with crank I.
J is a vertical shaft.
K is horizontal arm connected with shaft J and imparting motion to movable bedplate and inking roller.
L, is bed plate (permanent).
M, is upright constituting part of the frame of the machine; 7?, guides; g, stop where finger escapes from hook; e, hook; (Z, finger.
The rigid joint or fulcrum pin (a) is attached to the lever and is connected by the bar (H) to the crank (I), which is also connected with the vertical shaft (J) at the top of said shaft; the shaft (J) being also connected with the arm (K,) which arm (K) is the journal of the ink roller (D). Pressure upon the lever (A), forces, by means of the rod (13,) the die (C) down upon the paper, which rests, to receive the impression, upon the movable bed-plate (E), and thus the stamping or printing is completed. At the same time, (while the impression is being received,) and by the same motion or pressure, a rotary motion is imparted to the vertical shaft (J) and the arm (K), by which the ink roller (D) is caused to pass over the ink sponge to receive a fresh supply of ink. Elevating the lever (A) raises the die (or type) and causes the ink roller to pass horizontally over and in contact with the under surface of the die, inking it for the neXt impression, while at the same time (and by the same movement) the finger ((Z) moves the bed (E) from under the die, and clutching with the hook (e) (in its backward motion) replaces the bed (E) in its first position, in the manner and for the purpose herein substantially set forth and explained.
What we claim as new and our invention, and desire to secure by Letter Patent is 1. The combination of the arm or lever (C) with the shaft (H), the crank (I) and the vertical revolving shaft (J) and the connection of shaft (J) with the revolving arm (K); thereby accomplishing a double action; viz; first, upon the ink roller (D) second upon the movable bed (E) for re ception of card or paper to be stamped or printed. By clown vertical pressure of lever (A) roller (D) moves horizontally over ink sponge (F) and in contact With it.
2. We also claim the combination of fingers (d) With hook (e) on movable bedplate, With the mode of adjustment and disconnection, for the purpose of effecting movement of movable bed-plate and 10 also the movable bed-plate for the purpose substantially herein before set forth. But We do not claim any other part or portion of the machine as new or of our invention.
