Description

R. J. SWABLY April 23, 1940.
CLOTHES RACK Filed March 16, 1939 Ii. J. Spa ably Patented 'Apr. 23, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to an improved clothes drying rack adapted to be detachably supported on the backs of chairs and the like and adapted to support handkerchiefs, hose and other articles of wearing apparel to be dried over radiators or other heating apparatus.
More particularly, it is an aim of this invention to provide a detachable clothes drying rack of simple construction capable of being economically manufactured and sold and constructed to hold a plurality of clothes in various adjusted positions relatively to each other and to an article of furniture by which the device is supported.
Still another aim of the invention is to provide a clothes rack including a frame formed of a single strand of wire having its ends bent to provide hook shaped hangers adapted to engage the back of a chair and provided with a plurality of bars having their ends slidably mounted on corresponding portions of said frame to provide a plurality of adjustable supporting bars. I
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter become more fully apparent from the following description of the drawing, which illustrates a preferred embodiment thereof, and wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the rack,
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken along the line 22 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken along the line 33 of Figure 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing,
wherein like reference characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the different views, I designates generally the rack, comprising the invention which includes a frame, designated generally II which is preferably formed from a single strand of relatively heavy gauge wire. The frame H includes the intermediate portion I2, and the legs I3 which project in the same direction from the ends thereof and which are disposed substantially at right angles thereto and in parallel relationship to each other. Legs l3 which are substantially the same length terminate at their opposite ends in the inwardly projecting portions I 4 which are preferably disposed at obtuse angles to the legs I3. The terminals of the strand I I project upwardly from the adjacent ends of the portions I l and are bent outwardly and back upon themselves intermediate of their ends to form the hook shaped hangers I5 which are disposed in spaced apart relationship relatively to each other. As best seen in Figure 2, the hangers I5 project obliquely from the portions I4 and are disposed at an acute angle to the plane of the bar I2, legs I3 and portions I4, for a purpose which will hereinafter be described. The hangers I 5 are preferably encased in the tubular members I6 which are preferably formed of rubber.
A plurality of bars I! are provided with eyelets I8 at their ends which are adapted to slidably engage the legs I3 for slidably mounting the bars I! therebetween.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the hangers I5 are adapted to be detachably mounted on the upper edge of the back of a chair or other piece of furniture, not shown, to mount the frame so that it projects outwardly from the back thereof since chair backs are ordinarily disposed obliquely to the horizontal the hangers I5 are disposed obliquely to the remaining portion of the frame II, as heretofore described, so that said portion will be disposed substantially horizontal. Hangers I5 are preferably enclosed inthe casings IE to protect the finish of the chair and the portions I4 by being disposed obliquely to the legs I3 space the inner ends of the legs from the back of the chair to prevent the chair from being marred thereby so that the only portions of the rack II) which actually contact the chair are the casings I 6. Legs I3'form rails for slidably mounting the rods- I1 which are adapted to be adjustably positioned relative to each other and to the portion I2, for supporting various types of clothing and other articles to be dried. The intermediate portion I2 forms a rigid bar adapted to be used in addition to the adjustable bars I! as a hanger.
Various modifications and changes. in the precise construction and arrangement of the parts forming the invention are contemplated and may obviously be resorted to, and the right is therefore expressly reserved to make such variations and changes as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter defined by the appended claim.
I claim as my invention:
A clothes drying rack comprising a frame formed of a single strand of wire bent intermediate of its ends to form spaced parallel side rails connected at their outer ends by a bar portion disposed substantially at right angles thereto, portions projecting inwardly of each other from the opposite ends of said rails and disposed at obtuse angles thereto. said portions terminating in upwardly extending hook shaped hangers, forming the terminals of said strand, and disposed in spaced apart relationship to each other, said hangers being positioned at acute angles to the plane of said frame, and a plurality of bars having eyelets at their ends for slidably engaging said rails for adjustably positioning said bars relatively to each other and to said first mentioned bar.
ROY .T. SWABLY.
