IMPROVEMENT IN ROAD-GRADERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 219,696, dated September 16, 1879 application filed April 16, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JONATHAN T. GURRIER, of Neponset, in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road-Graders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which Figure 1 isa plan view, Fig. 2 a side elevation, and Fig. 3 a crosssection, of my invention. Fig. 4 is a bottom View of my scraper.

The object of my invention is to furnish a simple, eifective, and economical grader or road-scraper; and its features of novelty consist in its peculiar construction and arrangement, which will be hereinafter more fully set forth. I

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.

A A A represent three beams, of unequal length, secured firmly together at their forward ends, and the two outer ones gradually spreading out toward the rear from the center beam, as fully seen in Fig. 1. Bis a crossbeam firmly bolted edgewise to the under sides of the beams A A A, near their rear ends, and at about the angle which their rear ends bear to each other. To this cross-beam B is secured the metal grader or leveler O, the lower edge of which should project a little be low the under edge of the cross-beam.

Another cross-beam, B, is bolted under-the beams A A A, a short distance in front of and at the same angle as the beam B, and to its under side is bolted a series of plows, g g, which may be of any suitable shape, but preferably curved laterally, as shown in the drawings, whereby the points of the plow-blades are extended under the ground, and serve to county of Bureau and hold the grader in place, preventing it from jumping when the metal leveler strikes an obstruct-ion.

To one side of the machine is secured a cutter, D, the forward end of which is pivoted to the end of the cross-beam B, and the rear end is secured adj ustably to the beam B by means of set-screw a, working in the slot 6. The machine is held steady and guided by this cutter.

In operation the plow-blades g 9 cut upthe earth and throw it toward the grader or leveler, which scrapes it off, filling up all ruts and holes, and carrying the surplus of at the side. The points of the plow-blades, being curved under, hold the machine in place when the leveler strikes an obstruction, preventing it from jumping, and the cutter D prevents any oscillation, guiding the machine steadily forward.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a road leveler or grader, the series of plows arranged on a line parallel with the scraper, and having their lower endsturncd laterally in a slight curve for the purpose of preventing the scraper from jumping, substantially as described.

2. The combination of aseries of plows constructed and arranged as described with the scraper, all as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In a road leveler or grader, the combination of cutter D with scraper O and a series of plows, g 9, all constructed and arranged to operate as and for the purpose set forth.
