April 2, 1940. H. v. FARMER CIGARETTE PACKAGE HOLDER Filed June 24) 1938 Inventor J77. farmer A llorneys Patented Apr. 2, 1940 H 2,195,514 CIGARETTE IAOKAGE HOLDER- Horace Victor Farmer, SaultSte. Maria:
\ OntariO, Canada I Application June 24, 1938, Serial No. 215,698.
' IClaim. (o1. Zoe-19.5) H otheror lower end, the bar l terminates in 1a The present invention relates to new and usefulimprovements int cigarette package holders for use particularly in automobiles and has for its primary object to provide, in'a manner as hereinafter set package of cigarettes in such a manner that a person, especially the operator of the vehicle, may conveniently remove the cigarettes from the package with one hand. I v I Another very important object of the invention is to provide a holder of the aforementioned character which is adapted to receive different kinds or types of cigarette packages.
Still another very important object of the invention is to provide a cigarette holder of the character described of such construction that a package of cigarettes may be, expeditiously mounted thereon or removed therefrom.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a cigarette package holder which will be compara tively simple in construction, strong, durable,
highly efficient and. reliable in use, compact and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference" designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:v I m Figure 1 is a. view in front elevation of an embodiment of the invention, showing one type of cigarette package mounted thereon. I Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view, taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the device, showing another type of package mounted thereon.
Figure 4 is an elevational view of the device with the suction cup omitted.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprisesa bar I of suitable resilient sheet metal. The bar I' is preferably of substantially the shape shown to advantage in Fig. 3 of the drawing. On one end of the bar lis an integral clip 2 beneath which the back 3 of a cigarette package 4 is adapted to be slipped in a manner to bev frictionally clamped thereby. At its free end, the clip 2 terminates in an outwardly curved lip 5 which facilitates the insertion of the cigarette package therebeneath.
The lip 5 also assists in preventing the cigarettepackage from slipping down ofi the clip 2. At its forth, a device of this character embodying a novel construction for. supporting a ,suction cup on which the mounted. The suction cup mounted on any suitable smooth surface, such as at a suitable point in the ceive the cigarettes in theoriginalfpackages.
:beneath the clip 2.
The bar I has formed in its lower portion an 5 opening I and immediately adjacent said opening a longitudinal rib 8 is pressed out of said bar.
The reference numeral 9 designates a rubber bar I is rotatably 9 is adapted to be 10 the, windshield or instrument board of an automobile. 1 a
Embedded'in the suction cup 9 and projecting therefrom is a threaded, headed pin the bar I is journalled, the opening I in said bar accommodating said pin. A nut H is threaded on the pin lll'for securing thebar "I thereon.
Mounted between the suction cup.9 and the bar l onthe pin II) is a resilient washer I2 having pressed thereinto a groove or channel into which the rib 9 on the bar I is adapted to snap for re leasably securing 'saidbar with the cigarette package thereon inan upright position. In Fig. 2
of the drawing, the groove or channel in the 2 -washer. l2 which receives the rib 8 is designated bythe reference numeral [3. v
' In use, the holder may be permanently mounted automabile which will be convenient to the operator sitting behind the 80 steering wheel. To mount the package 4 on theholder, the back 3 of said package is simply slipped up under the clip 2 and the bottom of said package is engaged on the hook or flange 6 With the package 4 held in this position the closure l4 'of said package may, be conveniently opened and the cigarettes removed with one hand.
,An important and highly desirable-feature of the invention is that the device is adapted to re- 40 In Fig. 3 of the drawing, the reference numeral l5 designates a paper type of cigarette package. When this type of package is to be mounted on the holder, a portion only of the top thereof is torn off in the usual manner, as at 4s 16. This side of the package I5 is then slipped up under the clip 2 and the bottom of the package is brought to rest on the hook or flange 5. Of course, the opening it which has been made in the top of'the package receives the clip 2. To facilitate the entrance of the clip 2, several of the cigarettes are preferably removed from the package. As seen in Fig. 3,0f the drawing, the construction and arrangement is such that the package I5-will. be supported at an inclination no on which 15 toward the side thereof in which the opening l6 has been formed for the removal of the cigarettes. Thus, due to the vibration of the automobile or by shaking the package 55 in any other suitable manner, such as by snapping it with a finger, the cigarettes therein will be caused to gravitate beneath the opening l6. Now, to remove the cigarettes, the bar I with the package 25 thereon is simply rotated on the pin IQ toan inverted position for permitting a cigarette to drop by gravity from saidpackage through the opening I6. The package I5 and the bar l'are then re-; turned to an upright position. When this is done the rib 8 seats in the groove or channel i3 'of'the washer l2 for frictionally retaining the. package in an upright position. The frictional" contact] between the bar I and the Washer i2 may be regulated as desired through the medium: of the nut ll threaded on the pin It.
It is believed that themany advantages of a cigarette package holder constructed in accordance with the present :invention will be readily ,je cting therefrom, a metallic bar rotatably mounted, at an intermediate point, on said pin,
a metallic washer mounted on the pin between the element and thebar, said washer having a groove therein, a rib on the barengagea'ble in the groove for releasably securing said bar against rotation .on thepi-na a nut. threaded on the pin for retaining thebar thereon and for frictionally engaging said bar with thewasher, and means for detachably? securmg: cigarette package on the bar.
