snwms NEEDLE THREADER Filed km. 20, 1938 IN VENTOR.
Patented Apr. 2, 1940 SEWING NEEDLE 'rnnaansn Christian Jauch, Bloomfield, NJ. Application October 20,- 1938, SeriaiNo. 235,973
- -1 Claim. (01. 223-99) This invention relates to devices used by seamstresses and others who may undertake hand sewing. An object of the invention is to provide a convenient implement for threading any common sewing needle.
' While such simple operation-must befrequently performed, it is not an easymatter, but particularly diiiicult if the operators vision is defective, and wholly impossible in a dim light.
Another purpose is to produce an effective, but small and compact implement, by which the passed through it'in a rapid manner, even in the. dark or by a blind person. j
A further feature is=in the provision of an inexpensive device so low in" cost as to place it within the reach of all, and so simple that it can by theangular-rear face'of the guide 20,1intoa notch 21. j j
The needle N is passed into-opening23, this 20 be operated even by unskilled persons.
These several valuable purposes are attained by the novel construction an arrangement of. parts hereinafter described and shown in they annexed drawing, forming part ofjthis disclosure, and in which: v I
' Figure 1 is a side elevaticnal view of a-needle threader made in accordance with the invention. I
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Figure 3 ma view similar toFig. 1, but with the top or cap portion removed, looking on. lines 3-3 of;Fig, 2.
' Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary 'viewshowing the operative parts in position to draw the thread through the needle eye.
'Figurefiisasimilarviewof thesame'but' showing the thread as passed through the needle eye.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the thread engaging hook and its holder. 4 Referring more in detail to theseveral views,
- said block having-a central longitudinal bore.
shouldered and reduced in diameter.- adjacent the device will be seen to consist of a frame;
made in two substantially equal flat plates, front and rear, respectively It and I2, having the sameprofile and held together by screws ll.
These plates are shapedto produce a spear shaped handle I! having opposed ed e recesses II to provide an efficient grip for the hand; outwardly beyond the recesses, on the topside edge,
is an outstanding lug i1, while atthe adjacent end is an'angiflar guide ll,'the opposite, rear edge is being level. A central bore 2! extends through the handle portionto adiametrically reduced bore 1 2i reachingthrough to the end.
a transverse drilled guidewav'li through the lug II, to intersect the bore II, the
'outcrendoftheopeningterminatinginaconical recess. v f
A plunger '28,. providedwith an enlarged-head 29, by which it is conveniently handled, is formed .with a keyiway or slot30, receptive of the point of a limit screw' 3l set in the handle l5.
Within the bore 20,1the plunger is reduced, as at 32, and encircled by aicompressionspring 33, andin the endof the reduced portion-is set ,a thin flatspea'r 35, its'outer fend; bevelled and needle eye is accurately positioned and the. thread .-at the be nn 0 th v l-1 a q s stituting. a- -catch-to-e'nga'ge' ai-thr'ead T as best seen in'Figs; 4 and .51- I -When the plunger-is pressed inwardly, to the limit of the stop screw 3i, thecatch'is inposition to receive a strand-of the thread,'guided into it proper receptive position for the thread and thereafter pass through its eye to receiveth'e.
thread, which isdrawnthrough the needle eye by action of the spring 38- when the plunger. is 30 released..
The simplicity of the device and ease of operation are believed apparent, therefore what is claimed as new and sought to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A needle threader' comprising a flat block formed of. two equal parts, its edge shaped to produce a finger grip and a raised 1118 .on one edge,
said lug, a cylindrical plunger movable in said bore, means toprevent rotation of said plunger,
said means also 'liniiting its movement, a concavely faced operating knob on said plunger, a 5 ..spring in the bore of said block urging said 1 plunger outwardly, guide means in said lug reyceptive of a needle, an adjustable socket in said biockto' aline the eye of an entered needle with the. .re,ducedp'ortion of the bore, a hook on the 50 innerend' of said-plungerfiadapted to 3 pass through the eyeof a-needle on said so'cket,-and means integral with said: block to direct'a thread I into position to be seized by said hook.
