Description

ELASTIC COLLAR AND TIE CLASP Filed June 30, 19159 INVENTOR AL. Pafc/Z ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 2, 1940 UNITED {STATE f .,2,l95,468 if ELASTIC ooLLAn AND mlntonasr H I Albert; PatchfTopekmIKana Application June 30, 1939, $erial No. 282,042}
.1 Claim." loifjz'ig -sn g which it is designed to be worn with reference to the front ends or points 5 of a soft collar 6 of The present invention relates to collar and tie accessories,-for wearing apparel, and aims to provide animproved device for preserving the neat and desirable appearance of the points or'meet- 5 ing ends of the collar with relation to the tie at the front of the collar.
Accordingly, I have devised an improved collar and tie clasp which isadapted to engage the front ends or points of the collar and hold them in the 10 desired position or in smooth and snug relation to the necktie, with a yielding action which will not interfere with theholding ei'liciency of the device and at the same time not be likely to release its hold on the ends of the collar andthus become disengaged therefromin the event of ex tra strain which is compensated for by the yieldingaction ofthe device I a 3 To this end I have devised a clasp construction which comprises a pair'of clips adapted for efiicient holding engagement with the ends' of the collar and connected by an elasticor yielding ele ment adapted to underlie the necktie and span the space between the collar ends and to yield sufficiently to allow'for the movements of the wearer while the device is attached in wearing position.
The device is ofsimple and inexpensive construction, comprising merely the necessary clip elements and their elastic or yielding connecting member, which may preferably beprovided witha suitable-guard or shield, and all adapted to be given a neat and attractive finish as desired for wearing purposes. I I
With the foregoing general object in view, the
invention will now be described by reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein is illustrated apractical and eificient embodiment of the p-roposed improvements, after which the features thereof deemed to be novel and patentable will be particularly set forth and claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a front elevation illustrating the im proved device in wearing position with relation to the front end portions of a collar and a necktie; 45 Figure 2 is a plan view of the device, on a slightly'large scale;
FigureS is a sectional detail view on a slightly larger scale, showing the elastic element connecting the clip elements; and
50 Figure 4 is a similar view showing the yielding connecting element inthe form of a coil spring and also equipped with the new sleeve or guard feature.
I Referring to the drawing now in specific detail,
55 the improved device is illustrated in the relation ashi'rt'. Y
Accordingly, the device comprises a pair of forked or gripping elements, such as the clips 8, 5
. each of which has a pair of fingers 9, and at least oneof said fingers of each clip having sufficient spring or resilient action so that the clip may be slipped over the edge of the collar'and be retained securely in gripping. engagement therewith. 10 The clips or gripping elements 8 are connected to the ends of a suitable elastic or yielding mem-' her ill, which is illustrated in Figure 3 as'a piece of 3 elastic material of appropriate size and strength for connecting the pair of clips and al- 15 lowing a suificient yielding action for accommodating any casual strains imposed upon the device While the same-is being worn and without danger of pulling the clips from the gripping engagement with the edges of the collar. 20
For the purpose of connecting the ends of the elastic iii to the clips or gripping elements 8, the latter may be provided with suitable slots l2 for insertion of the ends of the elastic and then clamped firmly" in place to pinch them securely 25 into gripping relation'with the elastic connection, as shown in Figures 2 and 3. 1 Furthermore, it is preferable to provide a guard or shield, such as the sleeve element I4 of any desired material, to he slipped over the elasticiele- 30 ment it] before it'is fastened to the clips, in which position it allows free expanding action of the elastic while actingalso as a shield or guard therefor. When the elastic is contracted into form stopsfor engagement with the clips 8, thus aiding in centering the device in correct position,
as illustrated in Figure 1.
As a modified form of the elastic or yielding connection, a coil spring element l0 may be sub- 40 sti'tutedinplace of the piece of elastic material H3, as. represented in Figure 4- -this, being the form of connection,.shown in my aforesaid copending application Serial No. 272,864 filed May 10, 1939. The connection between the clips 8 and theends of the spring it] may be effected in the same manner as in the case of the elastic strip H),
and with the sleeve element M slipped overthe spring I ll for functioning as a guard or'shield for the spring, as already explained.
In devices of. this general type now 1n common use, the gripping. means which engage the edges of the collar are joined together by a rigid unyielding construction which does not, therefore,- have any provision for compensating for any pulling strains; and as a result the whole structure is stiff and rigid and the ends of the device are liable to become detached from the collar.
In the use of the improved device, it is applied as, illustrated in Figure 1, in gripping relation to the ends of the collar 5 and with the elastic collar, while at the same time drawing the col-' lar back into correct position. Such a construction is also more comfortable to the wearer as well as neater in its general appearance, and more unlikely to slip out of its proper wearing position.
The parts of the device may be constructedof any appropriate material adapted to takea neat and attractive finish, suitable for this type of garment accessory. 3
While I have illustrated and described what I now regard as the preferred form of embodiment of my invention, I desire to be understood as reserving the right to make whatever changes or modifications may fairly be deemed to fall within the spirit or scope of the appended claim.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: a
A collar and tie clasp comprising a pair of forked gripping devices each providing a pair of fingers for gripping engagement with one of the front ends of the collar, a strip of elastic material for underlying the knotted portion of the tie and connecting said gripping devices, the inner ends of the gripping devices being provided with slots receiving the ends of said elastic strip and said slotted ends of said devices being pinched into clamped retaining engagement with the ends of said strip,and a guard sleeve surounding said strip of elastic material, with the ends of said sleeve forming stops forengagement with the slotted ends of said gripping devices.
