Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT H. SHERAR, OF STANTON, KANSAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN DUMPING-WAGONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 2 [9.532, dated September 9, 1879 application filed July 31, 1879.
-a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to'which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference. This invention relates to tilting-box wagons; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, A represents the axles, B the wheels, 0 the reach, and D the bolsters, constituting the running-gear of an ordinary farm-wagon, used to support my improved tilting-box attachment.
Upon the bolsters are supported cross-pieces E, having bearings for a shaft, F, located, as shown, longitudinally above the reach.
.To insure strength, the shaft F should be trussed, as clearly represented at Gin Fig.2 of the drawings.
The tilting box H is secured upon shaft F in any suitable manner. At one side its front and rear pieces are out off diagonally, as shown at I, and the side thus cutoff is provided with a cover, J, hinged at the top edges of the front and rear pieces. The opposite side of the box, which is the heaviest, is supported upon a cross-bar, K, connecting the crosspieces E E, between which it is removable to either side, so that by changing its position and reversing the shaft F, carrying the box, the latter may be made to tilt to either side.
To the cross-bar K is hinged a foot-board, L, which may bethrown over and rest upon the shaft F in either position of the barK and tilting box.
To prevent the box from tilting by accident, I provide the cross-bar K with a hook, M, adapted to engage one of a series of staples, N, in either end of the box, which is thereby kept securely in position.
From the foregoingdescription, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation of my invention will be readily understood. It is simple and easily attachedto the runninggear of any ordinary farm-wagon.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In a tilting box wagon, the combination, with the shaft F, carrying box H, of the ad justable cross-bar K, having hinged foot-board L and hook M, adapted to engage staples N in the end of the tilting box, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT H. SHERAB.
