This invention relates to a flush typeof handle lock for use on automobile doors. In locks of this type, the outside handle for retracting the usual latch bolt is adapted to lie in a recess formed in the door panel and is maintained locked in that recess and under the control of locking means operated from the inside of the car and also from the outside of the car.
A basic feature of my invention embodies the by operation of the inside handle, this retraction being accomplished through the bolt retracting means of the outside handle. More particularly, I provide an outside handle and means operated thereby for retracting the bolt, the operation of the bolt retracting means in a reverse direction by a handle on the inside of the door being efiective to move the outside handle into its recess. A further feature of the invention embodies 20 means whereby the retraction of the latch bolt as by the slamming of the door act'; to move the outside handle into its recess. This retraction of the outside handle may take place also when the bolt is retracted by the inside handle. It will be readily appreciated that automatic retraction of the handle into its recess when the door is slammed shut would beextremely dangerous, should the fingers of the operator be caught between the outside handle and the recess into which it is moved. 30 Therefore, I form my outside handle operating means so that if the handle is moved more than a certain distance outside of its recess, which is naturally the case where the handle is beinggrasped by an operator, the handle operating means will become lnefiective to move the handle into the recess.
As a further feature, I prefer to use aconstruction whereby the outside handle will in such a case be thrown even further away from its recess.
Still a further contribution of my invention is the particular construction of the outside handle and the means for locking the handle in its recess controlled from the outsideof the lock. Preferably, these means constitute a push button which may be lock operated, and which is maintained in the handle proper.
A further feature of the invention embodies means whereby the outside handle may be locked in its recess by the inside handle, as well as by the outside locking means just described. By means of this construction, the inside handle may look the outside handle against movement out of its recess, regardless of the operation of the outside button or cylinder. A bandit proof lock operation is thus obtained to prevent the opening retraction of the outside handle into its recess of the door whenever the car is occupied by one who does not wish to have the door opened;-
A further feature of the invention is embodied in the construction-of the outside handle and the bolt retracting mechanism operated thereby, '5. whereby release. of the outside handle when it is in its recess permits its movement outof the recess to a position from which it may readily be operated manually for retracting the latch bolt. 10
Still a further contribution of my invention is the construction of the escutcheon and handle, and their relation to one another, and the means for maintaining the handle and escutcheon in the recess so as to prevent unauthorized removal of 15 the same from{ the outside. This contribution has been divided out of this application, and is covered in my application Serial No. 127,945, filed February 26, 1937.
There are, of course, additional features of the invention which are of extreme importance, such as the operation of the various parts of the lock and their construction, the release of the outside handle from the locking means operated by the inside handle when the door is slammed shut, etc. These features will of course be clearly described -in the specification which follows, and. will be claimed particularly in the claims appended hereto.
For a detailed description of my invention, 1 shall refer to the drawings in which Fig. 1 is a front view of the escutcheon and handle. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of Fig. 1, while Fig. 3 is a rear view of the parts of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 shows the operation of some of the parts of Fig. 2, while Fig. 5 is an end view of Fig. 2. Figs. 6 and 7 are end views of the cylinder lock used in my handle, while Fig. 8 shows a button used instead of a lock. Fig. 9 is a partial section and plan view of a door to which my lock isapplied showing the outside I handle just out of its recess. Fig; 10 is a view substantially along lines lll- -l 0 of Fig. 9 illustrating the construction of the parts of Fig. 9. Fig. 11 'is aview taken along lines l|ll of Fig. 9. Fig. 12 is a view of some of the parts of Fig. 9 with the outside handle in bolt retracting position. Fig. 13 is a view of the lock of Fig. 10 showing the various parts when the bolt is retracted by the outside handle, as in Fig. 12. Fig. 14 is a view of the bolt retracting cam in the position which it occupies in Fig. 13, the cam being partially cut away in Fig. 13. Fig. '20 illustrates the position of the parts when the outside handle is held out of its recess suiliciently to allow the fingers of the operator to lie between the handle and the recess. Fig. 21 illustrates the action of the parts of Fig, 20 when the latch bolt is retracted by the slamming shut of the door. Fig. 22 illustrates a modified form of retracting cam which acts in Figs. 20 and 21 to throw the outside handle away from its recess.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, and especially to Figs. 1-'7, 9 and 1'7, the handle assembly of my invention comprises an escutcheon plate It to which my handle I3 is pivoted on spin I l for movement into and out of a recess in the automobile door to which the lock is applied. The recess is shown diagrammatically and is designated by reference numeral l2 in Figs. 9 and 17. The handle I3 is shown formed separately from a retracting lug [4 for purposes of assembly, since the two parts may be made as one,
as will be readily appreciated. In the preferred 1 form, the retracting lug I 4 is also pivoted on the i' pin II.
The horizontal extending portion I! of the handle is bored out to house a detent bolt I! spring pressed outwardly by a spring l1 and retracted by a bell crank I 8 actuated by a push button ora cylinder lock l9. On three handles of a four door sedan, a button I! is used; while on the fourth handle, a cylinder lock is used, as
cam 2! is moved by operation of the key plug 22 from the position of Figs. 2 and 6 to the position of Figs. 4 and 7. By this movement, the locking cam 2| is withdrawn from a slot 23 in the handle proper, and the endwise movement of the cylinder from the position of Fig. 2 to the position of Fig. 4 will, through the bell'crank l8, retract the detent bolt l8. Naturally, this retraction of the detent bolt l8 will release the handle for movement from the position of Fig. 17 in the recess l2 to the position of Fig. 9 under the influence of a spring 24, provided the handle is .not locked by additional and independent means to be described presently.
Both the handle l3 and the escutcheon plate i0 fit in the recess l2, the escutcheon plate being secured in the recess through a bayonet joint formed by its ear member 25 coacting with the edge 28 of one end of the recess I 2. when the. handle is locked in the recess through detent bolt l6, it is readily seen that outward movement ofthe escutcheon and handle from the recess I2 is impossible, the parts forming in effect a rigid bar held at one end by the detent'bolt' l8, and at the other end by the ear 25. Once the detent bolt I 6 is retracted so that the handle may move to the position of Fig. 9, then of course the ear 2! may be moved endwise relatively to the end, surface 26, thus removing the escutcheon and the handle from the recess. Screws housed in the holes 21 of the escutcheonv Hi retain the escutcheon relatively to the door when the handle is in its position of Fig. 9, but the screws in the holes 21 have no retaining function when the handle y is in its locked position of Fig.- 17. This construction is all covered in my divisional case supra.
The bolt of my door lock is designated by reference numeral 23, and has a main body carrying a pair of pins 29 and 30. These pins support a link 3| through a slot 32. The end surface of slot 32 impinging against the pin 29 will retract the latch bolt against the pressure of spring II when the remote control rod 33 is moved to the right in Fig. 10 by counterclockwise rotation of aninside handle 34. The" handle 34 operates the rod 33 through means of a .rotating crank 35 having an integral cam 36 which has depressions 31 and 3B-cooperable with a detent spring 39.
I shall now refer to Figs. 9, 10, 12 and 13 to describe the means for retracting the bolt 23 by means of the outside handle l3. A U-shaped bolt retracting cam 4| is pivoted on the legs of its U at 42 and 43 to. the U-shaped main frame plate 44 of the lock, and is adapted for rotary movement on said pivots 42 and 43 when actuated by the retracting lug I4 of the handle, this lug being cooperable with the surface 45 of the cam.
4|. Rotation of the cam 4| forces the lip-turned -lug146 thereof to contact the surface 28a-of the bolt and move the bolt from the position of Fig. 10 to the position of Fig. 13 by the movement of the outside handle l3 from the position of Fig. 9 to the position of. Fig. 12.
When the bolt 28 is in its fully thrown positionof Fig; 10, the retracting cam 4| is maintained in a balanced position by a relatively pow-" erful spring 48 and with its up-turned lug 46 spaced from the bolt surface 28a. In this position of the parts, the retracting lug H of the outside handle i3 is in its dotted line position of Fig. 11, spaced from. contact with the surface '45,- if the handle is locked in its recess by bolt 16. If, in this position of the parts, the cylinder lock or push button I! is depressed releasing the latch bolt II, the handle is allowed to dump outwardlyfrom the recess l2 under the influence of the spring 24 to its position of Fig. 9. The lug l4 then moves into its full line position of Fig. 11 against the surface 4!. Manual swinging of the handle l3 from Fig. 9 to Fig. 12 now acts to retract the latch bolt through the retracting cam 4|, the cam moving fromits position of Fig. 10
to its position in Figs. 13 and 14. The relation of the retracting lug l4 to the surface 45 of the retracting cam II is 'well illustrated in Fig. 15. I have now explained just how the bolt'28 is retracted either by the outsidehandle l3 or the inside handle 34.
I shall now explain how the retracting movement of the latch bolt by the slamming shut of the door acts to move the outside handle l3 into its recess l2. This action is probably best shown in Fig. 16 wherein it will be readily seen that on the under side of the vertical extension of the body of bolt 23, there is-a depending lug 4'! which cooperates with the surface 28a of a heart shaped cut-away portion 49 of my retracting cam 4|. The forceful retraction of the latch bolt 28 when it impinges against the strike 50 in Fig. 16, is such as to cause the lug 41 cooperating with the surface 49a to rotate the retracting cam 4| clockwise on its pivots 42 and 43 from the position of Fig. 10 to the position of Fig. 16. In so moving, the surface 45 of theiretracting cam 4! will cooperate with the lug I 4 of the handle l3 in a manner directly the reverse of its cooperation when the handle l3 acts to retract the latch bolt- The result of this action is to move the outside handle l8 into its recess, as illustrated in Fig. 17, which figure shows the positioning of the handle l8 .when the parts of the lock are in their relation shown in Fig. 16. Naturally,,when the outside handle moves into its position of Fig. 1'7, the latch bolt "locks the handle in its recess by coaction withthe surface "a of the recess, as will be readily appreciated.
While this movement of the outside handle into 1 its recess is caused by the very forceful retracting of the bolt 28 incidental to its abutting a strike 68, substantially the same action may be obtained when the bolt is retracted by the inside handle 84, as previously described, if such action.
is desired. In my preferred construction, however, the bolt 28 is not retracted by the inside handle 34 in a. manner to cause the lug 41 to rotate the cam 4| with the power required to move the handle l3 into the recess.
In Figs. 20 and 21, I illustrate what happens when the bolt 28 is thrown back by a strike so ata time when handle I 3 is sufficiently out of its recess |2 to permit the insertion of fingers between it and its recess. It will readily be appreciated that when the handle |3 is out of its recess in the position shown in Fig. 9, the cam 4| is in its position of Fig. and is maintained balanced by the spring 48 with surface 48a opposite de-; pending lug 41.

Thus, the forceful retraction of the latch bolt 28 incidental to its abutting a strike 58 will'cause the lug 41 to cooperate with the surface 52 rotating the cam 4| counterclockwise. and therefo e away from the retracting lug ll of handle l3. In the modification of Fig. 22, a circular surface 45a is shown on the cam 4|, formed as an extension of the surface 45, and has a double coaction with the lug |4. If the bolt 28 is retracted by the slamming shut oi the door, with the fingers of the operator between the handle and the recess l2 as described above, should the cam modification of Fig. 22 be used, the handle l3 will actually be thrown away from the recess l2. This insures the safety of the operator's fingers.
I, shall now refer to the remote control means actuated by the inside handle 34, and which are operable to move the outside handle into its recess and to lock the same in its recess independently of the outer locking means embodied in the latch bolt |6 and the controlling cylinder IS. The link 3| used for retracting the latch bolt by the counterclockwise rotation of the hand e M from its position in Fig. 10, has an extension 68 cooperable with a pin 6| formed on the retracting cam 4| for rotating the retracting cam in a clockwise direction on its pivots 42 and 43, or
Because the cam 4| is locked in its position of Fig. 18 by the extension portion 68 cooperating with the pin 8|. the'handle |8is maintained locked in the recess l2. regardless of the release of the latch bolt 6 by the cylinder or push button Is, as the case may be. In this way, anyone in the car may readily lock the car against access from anyone having the key, in the case of the locking door, or from anyone operating the p button |8 in the case of the doors not pped with a key lock.
In order to prevent the locking out of the owner of the car should he open the door and leave the parts of the lock in the position of Fig. 18, and then slam the door shut, I provide a throw-out of the outside handle locking means.
This throw-out is operated by the pin 38 carried by the'bolt 28 and cooperable with the'righthand end of the slot 82 of the link 3|. If the bolt 28 impinges against the strike and is moved to the right from its position of Fig. 18, it is quite obvious that the pin 38 will move the link 8| to the right and will therefore release the pin 6| allowing the cam 4| to be rotated in a counterclockwise direction on pivots 42 and 48 under the influence of its spring 48. This, of course, moves the cam and its portion 45 to the position of Fig. 11 with the lug 4 of the handle I3 in its dotted line position, so that, the handle |3 may thereafter be readily released by retraction of-the latch bolt i6 in a manner illustrated in Fig. 9. V While I have now fully described the various operations of my look, I should like to go through va. complete cycle of those operations in order to better explain the relation of the parts which have been described in detail.
' In Fig. 10, the lock is shown with the inside handle 34 in a neutral position and with the latch bolt 28 fully thrown. In this position of the parts, the outside handle |-3 may occupy a locked position within the recess l2, as illustrated in Fig. 1'7, and if so, its lug 4 will be in the dotted line position of Fig. 11 relatively to the portion 45 of the retracting'cam 4|. If new the push button or look l9, as the case may be, is depressed from the position of Fig. 2 to the position of Fig. 4, the detent bolt I6 is retracted and the handle l3 may move to the release position of Fig. 9.
From this position of Fig. 9, it may be rotated to the position of Fig. 12, thus moving the cam 4| to its position of Fig. 14 and retracting the bolt 28, as is illustrated in Fig. 13, this movement hav-' ing no effect whatsoever on the inside handle 34.
If, with the parts of the lock in the position of Fig. 10, the door is locked, and the outside handle I3 is outside of its recess as in Fig. 9, the inside handle 34 may pull in the outside handle and lock it in its recess. To do this, the inside handle is rotated clockwise from its-position of Fig. 10 to its position of Fig. 18, extension 68 of link 3| cooperating with pin 6| of the cam 4| to rotate the cam so as to cause the handle surface 45 to abut lug l4 of the outside handle |3 to move the outside handle into its recess 2. This operation will also look the outsidehandle in its recess l2 because of the relation of the retracting lug H with the surface 45 ofthe retractingcam 4| and this locking of the handle in the recess l2 will be eflfective, regardless of the retraction of the'detent bolt 6 by the cylinder I9. .Naturally, a
reverse rotation of the handle 34 to its position of Fig. 10 will leave the outside handle in its recess but will release it for outward movement under the control of the cylinder |9. Movement of the inside handle 34 is somewhat controlled by the coaction of the spring 39 with the depressions 81 and 38 of the link 35, aswill be understood.
With the parts of the lock in the position of Figs. 9 and and the door open, should the door be slammed shut, the coaction of the bolt 28 with a strike 50 will retract the bolt, as is illustrated in Fig. 16. This will cause the lug 41 on the under side of the vertical extension of the bolt 28. to rotate the cam 4| clockwise through its coaction with the surface 48 of the heart shaped cut-out portion 49 of the cam 4!. This clockwise rota- 1 tlon illustrated in Fig. 16 will naturally cause the movement of the outside handle l3 into its recess in the same way that the handle is moved into its recess by the clockwise rotation of the cam 4| in Fig. l8. The handle will not, however, be locked in its recess except by the detent bolt l6 and may thereafter be readily released by the pushing in of the cylinder l9.
If the outside handle I3 is positioned slightly beyond its position of Fig. 9 out of the recess l2, as by the placing of the fingers oi the operator between the handle and the recess l2, the slamming shut of the door will not move the handle into its recess, as just described. When the outside handle I3 is moved away from its recess by the positioning of the operator's fingers between it and the recess, the cam 4| is moved to its position of Fig. 20, thus bringing the under surface 52 of the cam 4| opposite the depending ing 41. If now the door be slammed shut, the retracting movement of the latch bolt 28 will cause the depending lug 41 to rotate the cam ll counterclockwise by coaction with the surface 52, and this will throw the outside handle further away from the recess, if the cam construction shown in Fig. 22 is utilized. If, on the other hand, the construction shown in Fig. 14 is utilized, the outside handle will simply remain in the particular position in which it is being held.
I now claim:
1. A door lock including an outside handle mounted for movement into and out of a recess in the outer side of a door to which said lock is applied, a latch bolt, means whereby said latch bolt is retracted by movement of said handle, and means whereby a retractive movement of the latch bolt independently of said handle moves said handle into its recess. a
2. A door lock including an outside handle mounted for movement into and out of a recess in the outer sideof a door to which said lock is applied, a latch bolt, means whereby said latch bolt is retracted by swinging of said handle away from said recess, and means operable by said latch bolt as it is retracted other than by said handle for swinging said handle into said recess.
3. A door lock including an outside handle mounted for movement into and out of a recess in the outer side of a door to which said lock is applied, means for locking said handle in said recess when said handle is moved into said recess, a latch bolt, means actuated by swinging movement of said handle away from said recess from a position outside of said recess for retracting said latch bolt, and means whereby retractive movement of said latch bolt by other than said handle swings said handle from said outside position into said recess.
4. A door lock including an outside handle mounted for movement into and out of a recess in the outer side of a .door .to which said lock is applied, means for locking said handle in said recess when said handle is moved into said recess, a latch bolt, cam means connected to said handle whereby swinging movement oi! said handle away from said recess from a position outside of said recess retracts said latch bolt, and means whereby retraction of said latch bolt as by the slamming of the door actuates said cam means to swing said handle from said outside position into said recess. 5. A door lock including an outside handle mounted for movement into and out of a recess in the outer side of a door to which said lock is applied, a latch bolt, means whereby said latch bolt is retracted by movement of said handle, a spring biased to project said handle out of its recess, and means whereby a latching back of the latch bolt independently of said handle moves said handle into its recess against the pressure of said spring. i I

A door lock including an outside handle mounted for movement into and out of a recess in the outer side of a door to which said lock is applied, a latch bolt, means whereby said handle retracts said latch bolt as it moves relatively to said recess, a part of said handleformed as a horizontally extending portion, a spring pressed detent bolt in said portion cooperable with means defining said recess for locking said handle in said recess, and a push button on said handle for retracting said detent bolt.

A door lock including an outside handle mounted for movement into and out 01' a recess in the outer side of a door to which said lock is applied, a bolt retracting cam, a retractor lug mounted on said handle for operating said cam, a lazy connection between said retractlng'cam and said lug whereby said handle may move a predetermineddistance out of said recess without pressing said handle out of said recess and tending to move said handle said predetermined distance, and means whereby the retraction of the latch bolt as by the slamming of the door acts through said cam and lug to move said outside handle into said recess. A door lock including an outside handle mounted for movement into and out of a recess in the outer side of a door to which said lock is applied, a bolt retracting earn, a retractor lug mounted on said handle for operatingsaid cam in a bolt retracting direction, a lazy connection betweensaid retracting cam and said lug whereby said handle may move a predetermined distance out of said recess without exerting retracting pressure on .said cam, an inside handle, and means whereby rotation of said inside handle rotates said cam in a direction opposite to its bolt retracting direction, movement of said cam by said inside handle being adapted through said lugto move said outside handle into its recess.
19. A door lock including an outside handle mounted for movement into and out or a recess in the outer side of a door to which said lock is applied, a latch bolt, a spring biased to project said handle out of its recess, means operated by said latch bolt as it is retracted by the closing of the door for moving said handle into said recess against, the pressure of said spring, an inside handle, said latch bolt operated means being, operable also by said inside handle for moving said outside handle into its recess.
20. A door lock including an outside handle mounted for movement into and out of a recess in the outer side of a door to which said lock is applied, a latch bolt, an inside handle, a cani operated by said outside handle to retract said latch bolt, means whereby retraction oi the latch bolt as by the slamming oi the door so moves said cam as to force said outside handle into its recess, and means operated by said inside handle for also so moving said cam as to force said outside handle into its recess.
21. A door lock including an outside handle mounted for movement into and out or a recess in the outer side or a door to which said lock is applied, a latch bolt, meanswhereby said latch bolt is retracted by movement of said handle, and means including said first means operated by the retractive movement of the latch bolt as when the door is slammed shut tor moving the handle into said recess.

A door lock including an outside handle mounted for movement into and out I of a recess in the outer side 01! a door to which said lock is applied, a latch bolt, means whereby said latch bolt is retracted by swinging of said handle away from said recess, means movable by retractive movement of the latch bolt and adapted to contact a cam movable by said outside handle whereby to swing said outside handle into its recess when said latch bolt'is retracted other than by said outside handle, said cam being movable by swinging movement of said outside handle to, a position wherein said cam is not actuated by said retractive movement oi the latch bolt to move saidoutside handle into its recess.

A door lock including an outside handle mounted for movement into and out of a recess in the outer side of the door to which said lock is applied, a bolt, a bolt retracting cam, an inside handle, means of connection between said outs side handle and cam whereby when said outsidehandle moves outwardly of said recess it moves said cam to retract said bolt independently or said inside handle, means whereby said inside handle moves said bolt retracting cam, said cam when moved by said inside handle operating through said means oi! connection with said outside handle to move saidoutside handle into its recess.

A door lock including an outside handle mounted for movement into and out oil a recess in the outer side 01 a door to which said lock is applied, a cam mounted for rotation, an inside handle and means whereby it rotates said cam in one direction from a neutral point, a latch bolt retracted by rotation of said cam by said outside handle, latch bolt retracting means in dependent of said cam and operated by said inside handle, and means whereby when said cam is rotated opposite said one direction by said inside handle it moves said outside handle into its recess.

A door lock including an outside handle mounted for movement into and out or a recess in the outer side 01' a door to which said lock is applied, a cam mounted for rotation in opposite directions trom a neutral position, an inside handle and means whereby it rotates said cam in one direction irom said neutral position, a latch bolt retracted by rotation of said cam by said outside handle, latch bolt retracting means independent of said cam and operated by said inside handle, means whereby when said cam is rotated by said inside handle in said one direction from said neutral position it moves said outside handle into its recess, said last named means retaining said cam and inside handle in the position to which they are rotated whereby to lock said outside handle in its recess, and means whereby the retraction of the bolt incidental to the slamming shut oi the door moves said inside handle and cam to release said outside handle.

A door lock including an outside handle mounted .ior movement into and out or a recess in the outer side of the door to which said lock is applied, a latch bolt, an inside handle movable in an are from one extreme position to another extreme position, means of connection whereby when said inside handle is moved to one of its extreme positions it first moves said outside handle into its recess, and thereafter through said means maintains said outside handle locked in said recess so long as the inside handle remains in said extreme position, said means of connection being -01 a one-way type so as to allow return of said inside handle to a central position while said outside handle remains in said recess, and means whereby movement of said inside handle to its other extreme position retracts said latch bolt."

A door lock including an outside handle mounted for movement into and out or a recess in the outer side or a door to which said lock is applied, an inside handle, a bolt retracting cam, means oi! connection between said outside handle and said cam whereby a particular operation of said outside handle moves said bolt retracting cam ina bolt retracting direction independently 01 said inside handle, means whereby said inside handle moves said cam opposite to said bolt retracting direction, said cam when so moved being operative through said means of connection to move said outside handle into its recess. g

A door lock including an outside handle mounted for movement into and out of a recess in the outer side of a door to which said lock is applied, a latch bolt, means operated by the retractive movement 0! the latch bolt as.when the door is slammed shut for moving the outside handle into said recess, said outside handle when moved partly out or said recess moving said means to a position in which retractive movement of the bolt will be ineflective to operate said means to move the outside handle into its recess.

A' door lock including an outside handle mounted for movement into and out of a recess in the outerside of a door to which said lock is applied, a latch bolt, means operated by the retractive movement of the latch bolt as when the door is slammed shut for moving said handle into said recess, and means whereby when said outside handle is in a predetermined zone outside said recess said means operated by the retracting latch bolt will be functionally dissociated from said outside handle.

A door lock including an outside handle mounted ror movement into and out of a recess in the outer side or a .door which said lock is applied, a latch bolt, means whereby a latching back of the latch bolt independently oi said handle moves said handleinto its recess, said means having a part thereof movable by said outside handle, the positioning of said part in a particular zone corresponding to a particular position of said outside handle, being a prerequisite to movement of said outside handle into its recess by said means.

A door lock including an outside handle mounted for movement into and out of a recess in the outer side of a door to which said lock is applied, a bolt retracting cam movable with said handle to retract said latch bolt, an inside'han- I die, means whereby said inside handle moves-said cam and therefore said outside handle into said recess, and means for dogging said cam when so moved by the inside handle whereby to lock said outside handle in said recess.

A door lock including an outside handle mounted for movement-into and out of a recess in the outer side .of a door to which saidlock is applied, a bolt retracting cam movable with said handle to retract said latch bolt, an inside handle, means wherebysaid inside handle moves said cam and therefore said outside handle into said recess, means for dogging said cam when so moved by the inside handle whereby to lock said
