Description

J. H. BUCHANAN.
Patente d Nov. 2, 1858.
a stove Which combines the advantages 0f 'the grate with the economy 0f an air tight UNITEI) STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J. H. BUCHANAN, OB NEW CONCOBD, OHIO.
STOVE.
Specifiqation 0f Letters Patent N0.
T0 all whom 1't may concern:
B0 it known that I, J. H. BUCHANAN, 0f New Concord, in the count-y 0f Mus kingun1 and Stute 01"? Ohio, have invented a 110W and useful Improvement in Ventilating-Stoves; and I d0 hereby declare that the following is a full, c1ear, and exact description of the s2urne, reference being had t0 the accompanying drawings, forming 21 part 0f this specification, in whi0h- Figu1'e l, is a perspective view 0f my 1111- proved st0ve, and Fig. 2, is a vertical secti011 0f the san1e.
Sin1ilar letters 0f reference, 111 each 0f the several figures, indicate corresponding parts.
T110 0bject 0f my invention is 130 provide st0ve, and which Will afford from the same am0unt 0f fuel m0re light and heat than either, und especially be more conducive to 1102111311, require 1ess material in its construction and suit any degree 0f draft.
My invention embraces tl1e arrangement consisting of the conczwe bed 01 ash pit 0f larger diameter than t11e grate und c0n structed with supporting lugs 01 ledges; sen1i-spherical 0pen top-legged-grate 01 fire chamber with draft space existing between 113 and the 21511 pit 01 bed, and fiaring stove pipe appearing 21s a continuation 0f the grate and furnished with a transverse feed and draft d001 and arranged above the fire grate 01 chamber und mac1e adjustable in a vertical 11110 with the fire grate 011 21 vertical standard, all for the purposes hereinafter st-ated.
T0 enable others, skilled in tl1e art, t0 11121ke and use my invention, I Will pr0ceed c0 describe its construotion 2u1d operation.
A, represent-s the base of the ash pit; B, the ash pit made 0f cylindrical f01111 and furnished with supports a, a, a, 011 its interior surface.
C, is the fix-e 011211111001 made partly spheri- 0211 211101 0f open grate WOI'k, and furnished with legs b, b, b, Whi0h rest up0n the supp0rts a, a, a, as shown. This grate is of smaller diameter than B, so that 21 draft space m, shall exist when it is in pr0per position, and the legs are made narrow so 21,938, dated November 2, 1858.
that the draft shall have a. chance t0 circulate u11der the grate or fire chamber. The bottom 0f the fire chamber is perforated so 21s t0 ad111it a dmft up thr0ugh it as illustrated by fl1e EUTOWS. By thus arranging thefire 011211111001, its open sides are exposed 211 1d it can be readily lifted 0ut 0f the ash p1t.
D, is a section 0f stove pipe. This secti0n 0f pipe is fitted 100se1y ab ics upper 011d over the 0t11e1 portion 0f the pipe so as t0 be capable 0-f belng moved freely up and d0w11. Its IOWG1 end is lllilde flaring 01 partly spherical so as t0 have in its outline, 21 similar f0rm as thah 0f the fire 01121111- ber, und thus when applied ap-pear as 21 continuation 0f the fi1e 0hamber.
E, is a vertical standard projecting up from the base of the ash pit. T0 t-his standard, the movable section 0f pipe is attached by means 0f an eye c, und set screw (Z, as sho-wn. By thus arranging the 1110V- ab1e section 0f pipe, it 02111 be raise 01 lowered 011 15110 Standard and thus made t0 create greater 01 less drz1ft anc1 t0 perfect1y vent-ilate the 100n1. By raising the section 0f pipe, the upper par 0f tl1e fire is exposed 2111d thus ligl1t and comf0rt afiorded. T110 draft is decreased, but the ventilation incveased. By lowering the section 0-f pipe the top 0f the fire is hidden and the venti1ati0n in1pair0d, but the draft increased. T110 con1plete lowering of the pipe only takes place when the fire is being started and 011 ret-iring t0 bed.
F, is a d00r in t11e secti0n of pipe for the introduction 0f fue1. This intermediate C1001, also, by being left open when the pipe is completely d0wn in order t0 insure safety, Will destroy the draft t0 0110 fi1e 011211111101 and thus prevent the fuel being rapidly 0011- sumed during the nighc.
I/Vhat I 0121i111 as my invention and desi1e t0 secure by Letters Patent, is
T110 arrangen1ent consisting 0f tl1e 001102We bed 0-1 ash pit A, of larger diameter than the grate anc1 constructed w1'th support- 111g lugs 01 ledges a, a; sen1ispherical 0pen t0p grate 01' fire chambsr C, Z), with draft space m, existing between it and the ash pit 01 bed A; and flaring st ove pipe D, appearing as a continuation 0f the grate and fur- The above specificatio-n 0f my improvenished with a transverse feed and drmft 1nent in ventilating stoves signed by me this C1001 F, and arranped above the fire glli 28th day of July 1858.
and made ad 'ustabf in a vertical 1ine with I J. H. BCI'IANAN.
