Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J. BALL, OF UTICA, NEV YORK.
HANGING SWORDS.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JONATHAN BALL, of Utica, Oneida county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Method of Sword-Hanging, called a Swivel Sword-Hanging, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of said hanging, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view of the swivel pin with the bit, plate and portion of the scabbard or clasp. A represents the bit of the swivel pin, B represents the swivel pin, C represents the plate and D a part of the scabbard or clasp into which the scabbard fits.
Fig. 2 is a view of the belt or sash plate which is to be attached to the belt or sash, on the outside, either by sewing or by placing a plate with a corresponding hole on the inner side of the sash or belt, and riveting the two together. Through this plate is a hole marked E the same size and shape of the swivel pin and bit. The bit, swivel pin and plate are usually made in one piece.
The manner of using the said invention is as follows: The belt or sash plate must be fastened to the belt or sash with the part of the hole which admits the bit of the swivel pin toward the upper edge of the belt. The plate C Fig. l is to be firmly fastened to the scabbard either directly or by means of a clasp into which the scabbard fits, with the bit of the swivel pin pointing toward the point or lower end of the scabbard and in position the reverse of the hole in. the belt or sash plate. The scabbard is then turned 21,933, dated November 2, 1858.
so that the open end is downward the swivel pin is inserted in the hole in the belt or sash plate and the scabbard is then swung around so as to hang perpendicularly with the point downward. rlhe scabbard then swings on the swivel pin or part of the swivel pin between the bit and plate as on a pivot, the bit of the swivel pin being on the inside of the belt or sash plate as shown in Fig. 3 prevents the swivel pin from being withdrawn and permits the scabbard to be swung forward for the purpose of drawing or returning swords, or of the scabbard hanging perpendicularly when the wearer is marching or standing in line. i
The length of the swivel pin between the bit and plate should be nearly the same as the distance through the belt or sash plate or if an inner plate is used, then of the belt plate, inner plate and the belt or sash between the outer and inner plates.
The belt or sash plate can be of any desired shape.
The advantage of this hanging being the dispensing with the rings, chains, straps, hooks &c. heretofore used as a sword hanging.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The arrangement and combination of the scabbard D, plate C, and bit pin A, B, with the belt or sash plate, substantially as and for the purposes herein shown and described.
JONATHAN BALL.
