WATER HEATER Filed June 6, 1938 John J Mac A ezZZ INVENTOR ATT ORNEY Patented Feb. 13, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WATER HEATER John J. MacNeill, New York, N. Y. Application June 6, 1938, Serial No. 212,196
roman. (01. 126-54) the inner wall I2 and the top wall l3. This lip 20 projects inwardly with respect to the heat passage I8 and constitutes a baflie to retard the vision of aheater of the indicated character whereby water may be heated while cooking, baking and roasting in the usual manner in order to economize the use of gas, electricity and oil, as the case may be.
The nature of the invention and the distinguishing features and advantages thereof will appear when the following specification is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which: I
Fig. 1 is a plan view, partly in section, of a combined water heater and gas burner constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a view of a portion of the water heater looking toward the'underside thereof.
.Fig. 3 is a side view, partly in section, of the combined water heater and burner.
Referring now more particularly to Figs. 1, 2, and 3, it will be apparent that there is shown a water heater 8 anda heating element 9, the same being in the form of a gas burner in the present instance. .It is to be understood that any other form of heating element may be used, such as an electric element or an oil burner. The water heater 8 consists of a hollow body l0 substantially square in the present instance. The body It consists of an outer wall ii, an inner wall l2, top wall l3 and a bottom wall II. The outer wall Ii is substantially square with rounded corners, and the inner wall I! .is circular or annular. The top wall I3 is convex and the bottom wall it is straight. The various walls define a water space l5 consisting of relatively wide areas l6 at'the corners of the body I0 joined by narrow areas ll. Theinner wall I! defines the heat cated centrally of the body In. The wall l2 has a plurality of grooves I 9 therein to increase the heating surface of the wall II. A lip 20 is formed integral with the body I II at the juncture between passage I810-v uD-flow of heated a. plurality of hot vision is made for air. The sides of the outer wall Hare tappedto provide a cold water inlet 2| and water outlets 22. Thus, prousing a single water heater or for making a multiple connection of a,plurality of heaters.
the water heater with the heating burner 9', the latter being provided The heating element 9 is of conventional construction and includes circular series tribute or direct the of gas orifices 26 which disflames upwardly in proximity to the bottom and inner walls of the water heater 8. The burner has the to supply a mixture of gas and usual feed pipe 21 In use, a vessel containing the food substances and liquids to be cooked or boiled is placed on the water heater 8. At the same time water admitted to the water space of the heater thereby economizing viding a water space and narrow areas water will be caused other words, as the water flows in the water given a rotary motion, therespace [5 it will be 8 will be heated of gas. By proof relatively wide on the use consisting l6 and I 1, respectively, the
to eddy at the corners, or in by causing a more rapid heating of the water.
As stated above, by
providing the grooves IS the heating surface of the inner wall l2of thebody is increased, thereby increasing the heating efliciency.
What I claim as new is:
A device of the character described comprising, a hollow substantially square-shaped body adapted to be supported above a heating element and providing a water space and heat passage, said water space comprising relatively wide areas at the corners of the body joined'by relatively narrow areas, said passage. ing surface thereof, wardly from' said he the wall of the body surrounding being grooved to increase-the heatand a baflie projecting indy with respect to said passage to retard the flow of heated air.
John J. micnmn air to the burner.
