Description
Jan. 30, 1940.
T. E. PEDERSEN BEDPAN CUSHION Filed Feb. 8, 1939 Inventor Attorneys Patented Jan. 30, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in bedpan cushions and has for its primary object to provide. in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character through the medium of which comfort to the user of a bedpan will be materially increased.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a bedpan cushion of the character described which is adapted to be expeditiously mounted in position for use on a conventional bedpan and which includes novel securing or retaining means through the medium of which the device may be readily removed when desired, as for sterilizing. I
Other objects of the invention are to provide a bedpan cushion of the character set forth which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly eflicient and reliable in use and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanyin drawing wherein like characters of reference deseral views, and wherein:
Figure l is a top plan view of a bedpan provided with a cushion constructed in accordance with the present invention,
Figure-2 is a view in vertical longitudinal section, taken substantially on the line 1-2 of Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is an end elevational view.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view in vertical section, taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view in cross section, taken substantially on the line 5-! of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the reference numeral i designates generally a conventional bedpan of any suitable material. The bedpan I includes a bottom from which the walls 3 rise, together with a seat flange 4, said seat flange defining an opening I.
The embodiment of the present invention which has been illustrated comprises a substantially horse shoe shaped pad I of soft rubber which is adapted to be mounted on the seat flange ignate corresponding parts throughout the sev- 4 of the bedpan I. Of course, the pad 6 conforms to the contour of the seat flange 4. The resilient pad 6 is of substantially the cross sectional shape shown to advantage in Fig. 5 of the drawing.
Formed integrally with the outer portion of the pad 6 is an apron l which depends from said pad adjacent the walls 3 of the bedpan I. Formed integrally with the inner portion of the pad 6 is an inturned lip or flange I of comparatively hard rubber which is engageable beneath the seat flange 4. 'This is also shown to advantage in Fig. 5 of the drawing.
It is thought that the manner in which the cushion functions will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. The pad 8 provides a comparatively soft seat for the user which prevents direct contact with the seat flange 4 of the bedpan I. The apron I and the lip 8 constitute means for securing the pad 6 in position on the seat flange 4. It will be observed that the construction and arrangement is such that the cushion may be conveniently removed from the bedpan when desired, as for cleaning and sterilising. 4
It is believed that the many advantages of a bedpan cushion constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated'and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
A bedpan cushion of the character described comprising a soft rubber pad having an upper surface of convex transverse cross section, said pad being adapted to be mouhted on the seat flange of a bedpan, an integral apron depending from the outer portion of the pad adjacent the walls of the bedpan. and an inturned lip of comparatively hard rubber integral with the inner portion of the pad and engageable beneath the seat flange, said lip and the apron constitutini means for detachably securing the pad in position on the seat flange.
