Description

A. J. HINDS. Clamp for Securing Brush-Handles.
No. 218,743. Patented Aug. 19,1879.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AARON J. HINDS, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLAMPS FOR SECURING BRUSH-HANDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 218,743, dated August 19, 1879; application filed June 19, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AARON J. HINDs, of Boston, Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Clamp for Securing Brush- Handles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a brush with my improvements attached. Fig. 2 shows the parts detached from the brush.
My invention relates to a detachable handle for brushes; and the object of my invention is to so construct the parts that the handle may be instantly detached from a brush and as quickly adjusted to another as rigidly and securely as though screwed in in the ordinary way, thus enabling one to change the handle from a worn-out to a new one, or from one kind of abrushto another-as,for instance, from a scrubbing-brush to a window-brush; or one may use the brush without the handle whenv found convenient; and my invention consists in a bifurcated plate attached to the back of the brush, and provided with an inclined slotted recess for the reception of a square-headed screw, which is in the end of the handle, and preventing the screw-head from turning while being drawn up to the handle.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the exact manner in which I have carried it out.
In the drawings, A represents a brush, to which is attached a bifurcated plate, a, provided with an inclined slotted projection, b, and flange c, as shown in the drawings. In the end of handle B is a screw provided with a square nut, 01. When the handle is to be attached to a brush the screw with the nut on the end is passed into the inclined slot in plate a, the nut fitting snugly into the recess under the flange c. It is only necessary then to give the handle a turn to the right to draw the handle and nut close against the flange and secure the handle rigidly in place; and, again, by turning the handle to the left it can be readily removed and attachedto another brush provided with a similar plate, a.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a brush, the bifurcated plate a, provided with the slotted projection b and flange c, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The bifurcated plate at, having the slotted projection 12 and flange c, in combination with the brush A and handle B, provided with the screw and nut 01, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
AARON J. HINDS.
