' E. C. ADOLPHE LOGGING DEVICE FiledBSepc. y6, 1938 14./ l/l/ v ATTORNEYS Patented Jan. 16, 1940 N romeu STATES LOGGING DEVICE Ernest O.Adolphe, Olney, Oreg. Application september s, 193s, serial No. 228,721
1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in hoistv ing and hauling devicesparticularly adapted for use in logging camps and the like.
A In land clearing operation, especiallyV in the northwestern part of the United States, after the marketable timber vhasbeen removed a conside erablequantitycf dead fall remains and is re-` quired to be cleared from the land as well as roots and stumps.
the ground and the upward end is deposited over4 other logs causing a slack in the sling arrangement which results in the sling'becoming disconnected above the log or from the main line--due to the construction of the hooks `and Ds ordinarily employed-thereby permitting the log to roll `and subject the workmen in the vicinity to serious injury.` i
It is,therefore, onel of `the principal 'objects of my invention to provide a logging device for maintaining the log securely attached to the main line during the` hauling operation.
Another object of my inventionl is' to provide a device of the above described character which is simple in construction, durable in use, eflicient in operation, yeasy of attachment and economical in manufacture. l f v 'A speciall object of my invention isto provide a loggingdevice of the above described character do equipped with achoker sov constructed and arranged as to" facilitate the attachment and de- Referringto the drawing` wherein like referf ence characters. designate like parts throughout the severalyiews: f
Figure l is a side elevation of my invention 50 illustrating the same attached to a log, certain of ,y
the parts being illustrated in section.
Figure 2 is a sectional View taken on the line 2 2 of4 Figure 1. i
Figure 3 is an `enlarged `detail sectional View L55 taken on the line 3-3 ofi Figure 1,
v These are hauled to a central: position and deposited in enormous heaps to be ,n
Figure 4 is a detail perspective View illustrating one of the Ds in position for engagement or disengagement with one of `the hooks.
In practicing my invention'I provide a pair of coacting detachable elements which comprise 5 a butt hook 5 and a D Band in the present instance, for the purpose of illustration, I employ a pair of said butt hooks having sWiveled eyes l through which are secured shackles 8d and 8U. of a main line and haul back respectively. Said shackles are connected together by links 9. The depending hook portions of the butt hooks 5 are provided at their respective throats with downwardly and upwardly extending keys Il) whichV `are spaced from each other a suiiicient distance 15 to permit a keyway II formed on the opposite sides of the Ds 6 to pass therethrough when said Ds are canted to dispose the normally vertically extending Vsides thereof in a substantially horizontal plane whereby to secure the upper or 0 curved ends of said Ds within said hooks against accidental dislodgement therefrom when said Ds v are in a normal vertical or slacked position therein. The lower ends of the Ds 6 are connected to the upper ends of a pair of spaced cables I3.` 25
The upper end sections of the cables I3 subjacent the Ds 6 are trained through chokes I4 and extend about a log I5, the `opposite ends of said cables being provided with Ds I6 of a similar construction as the Ds 6 and said Ds are 30 engaged in hooks I'I in the same manner'as the Ds 6 engage the hooks 5.
The hooks Il at the end opposite the connection with the Ds I6 are ,swiveled tothe choke I4 thereby providing a choke hook.` The choke hookcomprises a housing fashioned with an arcuate kpassage I3 extending therethrough and through which the cable I3 is trained.V One of the side walls of the housing is fashioned with an aperture I 9 and receives therein` the headed end of a pivot pin 2I carried by the adjacent end of the hooks I T whereby said hooks effect a swivel connection with the housing.A Due to the dimensions of the keyways on the. sides of the Ds in relation to the sides of the lthroats between the keys of the hooks, accidental dislodgement of the Ds from thehooks is prevented thereby `effect a high degree of safety in logging operations. f i 1 From the foregoing it will be apparent that I have provided a simple and reliable logging device for attaching logs and the like .to a main line. It is to be understood thatvarious changes and modications may be resorted to in the con- 55 struction and arrangement oi the parts Without departing from the spirit of the invention or scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is: A device of the character described, comprising, a pair of detachable elements adapted for v connection Within a log hauling device, one of having a throatl in proximity to said housing andy said elements constituting a hook provided with a swiveled housing having an arcuate shaped passage extending therethrough to slidably acn comlnodate a length of cable for supporting a log in clamped and suspended condition, said hook defined by a pair of spaced laterally disposed keys, and the other of said elements constituting a D adapted for connection with an end of said cable and provided with sides formed with lkeyways having sections of a dimension receivable through said throat, said D provided-with a top portion connecting said sides together in spaced parallel relation and connected to and Within'said hook subjacent said throat to secure said length of cable about a log and to preclude accidental detachment of said D from said hook When said log is supported in said clamped and suspended condition and to permit intentional detachment of` said D from said hook only vWhen said cable is slid through said housing and slackened about said log.
