Description

Jan. 9, 1940. w V R 2,186,880
SANITARY DRINKING CUP Filed March 6, 1939 Jvvuc n for Patented Jan. 9, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE SANITARY DRINKING om William M. Overgard, Salem, Oreg. Application March 6, 1939, Serial No. 250,201 1 Claim. (01. 6513) stud acting as a pivot for the member 8 to permit the same to be moved towards and from This invention relates to a sanitary drinking cup, the general object of the invention being to provide a renewable lip engaging rim part for the cup, so that each user of the cup can place his lips on a part of the cup which has never been used by someone else.
This object is attained by providing the rim portion of the cup with a recess over which is held a strip of paper or the like so that the user places his lips against this strip, after which the strip is removed and a new part of a strip from a roll can be put in place across the recess. The invention also contemplates a holder for the roll, guiding means for the strip and a spring pressed member for holding the strip across the recess in a fluid tight manner. I
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which;
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the invention.
Fig. 2 is an elevation looking towards the recessed part of the cup.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view through portion of the cup and the roll supporting chamber and showing the guiding means.
Fig. 4 is a section online 44 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional view through portion of the cup and showing a modification.
Fig. 7 is a view of the member for holding the strip in place of the modification.
In this drawing, the numeral I indicates the cup and the numeral 2 indicates a substantially U shaped recess in a portion of the rim part. A small container 3 is suitably attached to the cup and contains a roll of paper 5 or the like. A cover 6 is provided for the container 3 to protect the roll from dust and the like and a channel guide 1 extends partly around the upper part of the cup and has one end in communication with the container so that the strip can be passed through the same. This guide terminates adjacent the recess 2 and acts to guide the strip across the recess. An arouate'shaped blade member 8 has anoifset end part 8 which forms a handle and this part.has an opening therein, for receiving, a headed stud 9 on the guide, the
the recessed partof. the cup. A spring I!) engages a part of the cup and a part of the handle 8 and tends to hold the member 8 tightly against the recessed part of the cup so that it will hold a portion of the strip of paper extending across the recess 2 to prevent the escape of liquid between the strip and the walls of the cup adjacent therecess, when the cup is tilted to cause the liquid to contact the strip through the recess. This member 8 has a recess ll therein which aligns with the recess 2 when the member 8 is in position'holding the strip against the cup. The cup is is provided with the usual handle 12.
In the modification shown in Figs. 6 and'l, the handle part 13 of the member 8" is formed with an outwardly bowed part which forms a spring to hold the member 8" in closed position and this part I 3 is arranged adjacent the handle of the cup so that it can be pressed by a finger of the hand holding the handle of the cup, to swing the member 8" to open position. Also, in the modification, the member is hingedly connected to the cup as shown at M.
Thus it will be seen that when one wants to use the cup, he willfirst swing the blade memher to open position and then pull upon the strip of paper to draw a new part across the recess in the cup. Then he releases the handle of. the blade member so it will return to closed position, holding a portion of the strip tightly across the recessed part of the cup, with a part of the strip extending across the recess. The free end of the blade member issharpened so that by drawing the projecting part of the strip across this end it will be severed from the restof the strip. Then in drinking from the cup the user places his lips against the strip at the recesses 2 and l I, so that his lips only come in contact with the strip and not any part of the cup.
Of course after each use a new portion of the I changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is: r
A drinking cup having a recess in its rim portion, a holder attached to a part of the cup for holding a roll of strip material, a guide means on the exterior of the cup for guiding the strip
