My invention relates to means for ornamenting leather or cloth and other such materials used in making shoes and belts, etc., and is a division of application filed by Ren M. Sichere, Serial No. 178,980.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple machine constructed to apply coloring matter to a surface to form a band or ribbon-like line or lines extending parallel to each other to simulate a ribbon or cord, together with a line or lines of stitching on one or both sides of said band or line simultaneously with the application of the coloring matter.

The machine may be constructed as a whole if desired but I prefer to make it as an attachment for sewing machines such as used for sewing leather, etc., and utilize the feeding means thereof and the sewingmeans to provide the finished product.

Referring to the drawing which forms a part of the specification:

it! indicates a presser-foot which is carried by an integral shank II which extends upwardly therefrom and serves as a support for the mechanism.

The shank is formed to provide a rectangular shaped opening l2 the side walls of which serve to guide the casing in a vertical direction.

The casing is made in two half parts indicated by [3 and I3, the portion I3 having an integral lug M which extends into the opening l2 and fits in sliding engagement with the side walls thereof and is held in the shank H by the bolt and nut construction l5.

The casing portions are held together by screws l5 and I1 respectively, or may be held together by a bolt 20 which extends thru the portion [3 into the portion I3 which is threaded to receive the end of the bolt, the portion l3 remaining in position when the portion I3 is removed so that all of the interior parts may be inspected without disturbing or removing them from their normal position.

The casing portions are formed to provide a slot l8 of circular form in which a wheel [9 fits in close sliding contact at its sides, with its lower side [9 normally extending thru the slot H1" in the presser-foot I0 and resting in alignment with or slightly below the lower side of the casing and in alignment with or slightly below the lower side of the presser bar, when the presser bar or foot, is used.

The wheel is carried on the bolt 20' which serves as a shaft and is freely rotatable thereon.

The outer or tread surface 2| of the wheel I9 is roughened or serrulated in any desired form to carry and deposit a color or design onto a surface such as leather, to simulate a ribbon or tape or cord, etc., and to serve as a means whereby the wheel may be rotated by passing the material in contact therewith in the act of applying the coloring matter thereto.

The upper end of the casing is formed to provide a cylindrical part 22 which is open at its upper end and lower end and serves to support a removable container 23 which holds the coloring matter.

The container is provided with oppositely extending pins 2424 respectively which fit into bayonet shaped slots 25 formed in the enlarged top portion 26 of the casing as illustrated.

This arrangement prevents the displacement of the container when the machine is in operation and also serves to position the lower end thereof adjacent to the wheel l9.

To open the container which is made of soft material, a screw 21 formed with a sharp edge on its inner end, is fittedto screw into the casing wall and extend therethru into contact with the lower end of the container at one side thereof and shear a portion to permit the coloring matter to flow to the tread of the wheel forward of its greatest diameter so that the color will flow in the direction in which the wheel rotates.

Formed in each of the inner side portions of the casing is a shallow groove 28 which extends in curved form from the forward side of the wheel to a container 29 and serves to collect and carry excess liquid which may leak from the tread of the wheel, to said container.

Located above the grooves 28 are grooves 30 which lead from the wheel at 3| to the said container and serve the same purpose.

34 indicates a vertically extending shaft which. extends thru the upper wall of the casing at their point of juncture and carries a frusto-conical brush 34 which rests in a chamber 35 and is rotated by means not shown, which may be automatically driven when the device is operating, or may be manually rotated, the object being to keep the serrations free from dry or clogging matter.

32 indicates a piece of material such as soft rubber, which fits in a slot 33 formed in the cas- 55 ing, and serves to closely confine the coloring matter in the serrations in the wheel.

The presser-foot is provided with two or more apertures 36 spaced apart thru which spaced needles 38 may pass to stitch the leather or material when the device is constructed for use with a sewing machine, said stitching extending along the band or stripe as it is formed, and any desired color may be used.

The container 29 is used as a drip-pan and may be removed at any time by simply sliding it from its position of rest.

39 indicates a, spring which normally holds the casing in its lowest position but permits it to rise a limited distance in case the wheel should encounter a hard substance or that the thickness of the material should vary, thus permitting the wheel to follow any uneven surface over which it is passing.

The device may be operated by means of the sewing machine to which it is attached and which serves to feed the material to the tread of the wheel automatically and at the same time provide the stitching, as will be readily understood.

Changes as to form and details of construction may be made within the scope of the invention as disclosed and therefore I do not wish to be limited in this respect except as limited by the claims granted.

Having thus described my invention I claim as new:

1. In a sewing machine, a pair of reciprocating needles for simultaneously forming parallel lines of stitching in a sheet of material, a presser foot and means carried by the presser foot in proximity of said needles for applying fluid coloring matter to the material between two lines of stitching to form a band having its edges adjacent to the lines of stitching.

2. In a sewing machine, a presser foot, a reciprocating needle for forming a line of stitching and means carried by the upper side of the presser foot in close relation to said needle for progressively applying a stripe of fluid coloring matter to the work with the stripe having an edge parallel and adjacent the line of stitching as the stitching is formed.

3. In a sewing machine, a head for simultaneously reciprocating at least a pair of needles, a presser foot and means carried by the presser foot adjacent the rear sides of the needles for applying coloring material to the work in stripe formation between parallel rows of stitching with the edges of the stripe adjacent the lines of stitching.

4. In a sewing machine, a head for simultaneously reciprocating at least a pair of needles, a presser foot and means carried by the presser foot adjacent the rear sides of the needles and. between said needles and one end of the presser foot for applying coloring matter to the work in stripe formation between parallel rows of stitching with the edges of the stripe adjacent the lines of stitching, said means comprising a container for fluid coloring material having dispensing means carried at its lower end and adapted to be spread by the movement of the work in contact therewith.

5. In a sewing machine, a head for simultaneously reciprocating at least a pair of needles, a presser foot and means carried by the presser foot adjacent the rear sides of the needles and between said needles and one end of the presser foot for applying coloring material to the work in stripe formation between parallel rows of stitching with the edges of the stripe adjacent the lines of stitching, said means comprising a container for fluid coloring material having dispensing means carried at its lower end and projecting downwardly through the presser foot to be operated by the movement of the work in contact therewith.

6. In a sewing machine, a presser foot, an inking member carried by the presser foot intermediate the front and rear ends thereof and adapted to imprint a colored stripe on material passing beneath the presser foot, and a pair of vertically reciprocating needles moving through the presser foot forwardly of and adjacent the inking member and respectively disposed at opposite sides of the inking member for forming parallel lines of stitching at opposite sides and adjacent the stripe.
