W. R. KOHL BAG SEALING Filed Dec. 8, 1937 Patented Oct. 24, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,117,492 me smnmd William R. Kohl Glenview, 11!. Application December 8, 1937, Serial No. 178,645
4 Claims.
My invention is abag, and method of sealing a bag.
. Other objects are sealing a moth-proof bag; a weather-proof bag; and a self-sealing pressure seal bag capable of repeated opening and repeated sealing.
Further, my invention has a peculiar and inventive application to bags made of transparent material which may be sealed by heat and pressure, and pressure self-sealing, protecting garments against atmospheric conditions, and forms of life having a tendency to injure and destroy garments therein.
The accompanying drawing is an embodiment of my invention, in which Fig. 1 is a broken section of a bag showing the treatment of the upper portion, the side, and the bottom.
Fig. 2 is a flat view of one primary sealing member.
Fig. 3 is a .flat view of a seal.
Fig. 4 is a view of an aperture to be sealed after a hanger is inserted thru for support.
Fig. 5 is a broken section of the bottom of a bag, showing the structure of the sealing members.
Fig. 6 is a broken section of the bottom of a bag, showing the device in Fig. 5 closed.
Fig. 7 is a broken section of a modification, in which there is a sealing means inside a bag to strengthen the outside sealing means. 1
As illustrated I show primarily the device as applicable to a bag preferably made of transparent material which is responsive to sealing under heat and pressure, such as some forms of rubber derivative, or viscose. The same treatment is applicable to bags using a thermoplastic adhesive for union.
v The bag i0 is made from a flat sheet folded, with a longitudinal seam H by pressing upon the same a heated tool having a serrated form i2, Joining the lapping edges of the beam ll; these serrations making long strong lines of union perfectly air tight and stronger than the basic material itself. This tube I0 is flattened and at one end is lapped over on the body at either side I 3 and Il from a central opening the edges l6 and I I of the lapped portions sealed to the body by heat and pressure in serrated form II. The opening I5 is provided for the free passage therethru of a hanger for supporting a garment therein. I provide a means for sealing the opening i5 comprising two members, one preferably a double diamond shape [8, Fig. 2, the diamonds locking member of a Joined at one edge ll of each adapted to be folded at their junction; the other a single diamond shape 2|, to correspond to one portion of it. These members l8 and 2| are formed out of a substantially tough fabric coated on one side 5 with a substantially non-drying self-sealing adhesive, the adhesive being initially temporarily protected by a fabric easily removed. In the member l8 a scoring of the temporary fabric at 22 is made so that a portion 23 may be removed ii leaving the arrowhead portion 24 intact, upon which the member I! is straddled over an inclined edge of the top of the bag, simply pressed against the area adjacent the.centra1 opening l5,
with the arrowhead portion lines 22 registering 35 with the line It of the opening thus leaving an unsealed mouth 25 along the inclined edge of the bag opposite to the edge which is sealed by the lapping thereover with the member it: the said opening 25 being provided for the passage therean thru of the hook portion of a hanger. The member 2i being relieved of fabric a half portion is adhesively attached to that portion of member i8 which is adhesively attached to the back of the bag, as at 26; the other half of 2! hanging 25 free facing theaperture 25. This completes the bag at its upper portion ready for use. When a garment with a hanger has been placed in the bag and the hook of the hanger has been passed thru the aperture 25 the said portion H is lapped 80 over the aperture 25 and pressed down, looking it. The adhesive is of such a character that when not exposed to the atmosphere it retains its adhesive characteristics, and the ensealing portion of 2i may be readily lifted to remove the hangerand 85 then placed back.
On the bottom of the bag the front wall 2? is shorter than the rear wall 28: on the face of the front wall 21 I attach a strip 29 of the adhesively coated material, its outer surface being uncoated; and on the inner face of the rear wall 28, I attach a strip 30 adhesively coated on both sides, the exposed side faced with a temporary fabric 20 to be stripped 012 after a garment is suspended in the bag and the strip 30 turned up and adhesively attached to the strip 29, thus completing the sealing of the whole bag. A tab 20a is lightly attached to the fabric 20, extends around its edge and is stuck to the back thereof for lifting a beginning end of fabric 20 exposing its coating.
In Fig. 7 I show a modified form in which I place one of the double-diamond shapes l8 inside of the bag in reverse position Ila from the outside form It, thus giving a doubieatrength to the central opening I6 of the bag.
I do not limit myself to the device as shown and described except in so far as I am limited by the scope of my claims.
I claim:
1. A bag constructed of one piece of material into an elongated flattened tube, one end of said bag having its edges angularly turned overand attached to the body of the bag, thesaid turnedover edges spaced apart providing a median opening for the passage therethru of a garment-suporting device, a means for sealing said opening consisting of two coactive members each having a coating of non-drying self-sealing adhesive, one of said members being adapted to straddle one of the turned-over edges .and be attached at the front and back of the bag immediately adjacent to the median line of the opening and provide a mouth for the passage therethru of the supporting device, the other member adapted to be attached to the straddle member on one side and having a free portion adjacent to be brought over and attached to the opposite straddle member sealing the mouth opening after the supporting member is in position.
2. A bag consisting of a rubber derivative formed into a flat tubular body, its joining seams fused by heat and pressure, one end of said bag having means for being self-sealingly closed when articles have been inserted-therein, the opposite end having a restricted opening median thereof, the portions adjacent to either side of the said opening folded upon the body and sealed by fusing to the body of the material, a combination closure of the restricted opening comprising two members, one a double diamond shape and one a single diamond shape, each of the said diamond-shaped portions being constructed of a tough fabric bearing upon one face a non-drying self-sealing adhesive adapted to be sealed by simple sealing pressure thereon, the double portion adapted to straddle one inclined edge adjacent to the median line, one half-portion attachable to the rear and the other half-portion attachable to the front, reinforcing the material at the restricted opening and providing a mouth opening on the inclined side opposite to the straddled member, the.single diamond-shaped member being attached by a half portion to one portion of the double diamond-shaped member and having a free portion adjacent to the mouth opening, and
adapted, when a hanger hook has been passed thru the same, to be folded over the mouth opening and self-sealed on the other portion of the double diamond-shaped reinforcing member, the single diamond shaped member adapted to be unsealed on the removal of articles from the bag, and be repeatedly self-scale bypressure. 3. A garment bag consisy' g of a flattened tube longitudinally sealed having at one end a restricted opening flanked on either side by laps folded against and sealingly united to the body, the opposite end opening having means to hermetically seal the same, the restricted opening reinforced by a member of a locking combination consisting of two diamond shaped portions adapted to straddle an inclined edge and each be pressure-sealed to the back and front respectively adjacent to the opening and sealingly close said opening to the media line thereof providing a mouth opening along ,a portion of the op posite inclined edge, said mouth capable of being lockingly sealed by a second member of the looking combination-which consists of a member adapted to be self-sealed by pressure to the rear side of the straddle member of the locking combination and having a portion adapted to be closed over the mouth opening of the restricted opening after a hanger hook has been passed thru the same and be self-sealed by pressure on the front side of the reinforcing straddle member of the locking combination,
