UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES W. CANNON, OF HELENA, MONTANA TERRITORY.
.lMPROVEMENT/IN COMBINATION-TOOLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 217.583, dated July 15, 1879; application filed May 14, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES WESLEY CAN- NON, of Helena, in the county of Lewis and Clarke and Territory of Montana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combination-Tools, of which the following is a specitication.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved tool. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view of the same. Fig. 4 is a side view of a piece of fuse and its cap. Fig. 5 shows a modified form of the tool.

The object of this invention is to furnish an improved combination-tool designed for use in preparing giant-powder and other powder cartridges, so as to avoid the necessity of having to use a number of tools for this purpose, and which at the same time shall be neat and compact in construction and convenient in use in either capacity.
The invention consists in a combination-tool formed of the handles pivoted to each other, and having a tack-puller and a screw-driver formed upon their ends, the curved jaws having half-round notches formed in their edges, and the blades or cutters attached to the sides of the said jaws, as hereinafter fully described.
A B are the handles of the tool, which are pivoted to each other near their forward ends, and have curved jaws O D, similar to the jaws of nippers, formed upon their forward ends.
To the sides of the jaws O D are secured, by rivets or'other suitable means, knives or cutters E F, which thus operate as shearblades to cut off the fuse G to the desired length.
In the edges of the jaws O D are formed half-round notches o d, for creasing the cap H after it has been placed upon the end of y the fuse G, for thedouble purpose of keeping it in place upon the said fuse and making it water-tight, so that the cartridges can be used in damp or wet places.
The tool is held open by a spring, I, interposed between the handles AB, being attached to one of the said handles and resting against the other.
The end of the handle A has a notch, or, formed in it to adapt it to serveas a tackpuller, and the end of the other handle, B, has a screw-driver, 1), formed upon it, designed especially for use in opening the boxes of powder which have their covers fastened on with screws.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A combination-tool formed of the handles A B, pivoted to each other, and having a tackpuller, a, and a screw-driver, b, formed upon their ends, the curved jaws O D, having halfround notches c d formed in their edges, and the blades or cutters E F, attached to the sides of the said jaws, substantially as herein shown and described. 4
CHARLES WESLEY CANNON.
