zz claims. (m. lov-sa) This invention relatesto typewriting machines and more particularly to stops for arresting or limiting movement of typewriter carriages in letter-spacing or return directions and mechanism for adiustably podtioning such stops.
It is usual to provide cooperating stop elements on typewriter main frames and carriages' for arresting or limiting movement of the carriages either for xing the writing margins or for positioning the carriage for tabulating operations. Stops and stop-setting mechanism embodying the present invention are especially suited ior use in fixing the margin onthe typed sheet and the embodiment of the invention to be described comprises a typewriter including a stop arranged to cooperate' with a stop on the frame for fixing the left-hand margin of` the typed sheet and mechanism for adiustably positioning one of the cooperating stops. It will be understood, however, that the invention is adaptedA for more general application. i v
An object of the invention is to provide an improved form or adjustable stop for arresting or limiting movement oi a typewriter carriage on the associated-frame in letter-spacing direction.

In accordance with the disclosed embodiment oi the invention, a stop is supported and locked in adjusted position on the carriage for cooperation with the frame-mounted center stop I6 to arrest or limit, movement oi the carriage and means are provided for quickly and easily unlocking the stop, shifting it along its support to adjusted position, and for automatically re-locking the stop in adjusted position on the support verse teeth 20 spaced along its lower iace and 55 being formed with a slot 2| extending upwardly from the bottom or toothed face of the bar, the bar being supported on and between the carriage end plates 5 and 6; and a stop setting rod generally designated F is mounted for sliding movements in the slot 2|, extending out through the end plate 5. In order to support the left-hand end of the bar E on the end plate 5 without obstructing the slot 2|, a clip 22 formed with prongs 23--23 extending into recesses 24-24 in the bar is secured to the end plate 5 by a screw 25 and by partial'embracement of the end plate connecting bar I0. The right-hand end of the marginstop bar is secured to the end plate 6 by means of a screw 26.
The left margin stop D includes an inverted U-shaped member 21 mounted for sliding movement on the stop bar E, the downwardly extending legs of the member 21 being connected by pins 28 extending across and under the bar E.
'A leaf spring 29 mounted on the pins presses upwardly against the teeth 20, serving to seat the top part of the member 21 on the bar. 'I'he U-shaped member is formed with an extension 30 bent laterally as at 3l and adapted to engage the center stop |6 when the carriage is moved to the right for iixing the left-hand margin on `the sheet being typed.
The stop element D is provided with a latch 32 formed with mounting ears pivoted on the right end pin 26 as viewed in Figures 2 and 6. The left-hand end `of the latch 32 is turned downwardly as at 34, the downwardly turned end portion 34 being recessed as at 35 so as to receive the margin stop bar E, the formation of the recess providing a latch cross bar or nose 36 `extending across the slot 2| and being engageable between adjacent teeth 25. A spring 31 bearing upon the top of the U-shaped member 21 and seated in a recess 3l in a finger knob 39 o'n the latch urges the latch upwardly and thus urges the nose 36 into engagement with the ltoothed bar E. "Ihus, when the latch is in the position `shown in Figure 2, the stop element D will be held against longitudinal movement relativetc thebar E and the carriage, so that when the carriage is moved to the right, engagement of the extension 30 on the U-shaped member 21 with the center stop I6 will prevent further movement of the carriage to the right, thus fixing the right'- hand margin in accordance with the setting of the stop element D on the bar E. Preferably, the stop element D is provided with an adjustably mounted gauge 40 which may be formed with a slot 4'I through which is passed the shank of a screw 42 having vthreaded engagement with the latch 32, the gauge being formed with a pointer 43 directed towards the scale |I.
In accordance with the invention the rod F is arranged to cooperate with the stop D for adjustably positioning the stop on the bar E for varying or determining the left-hand margin on the work sheet. As shown, the rod comprises a main portion or shank 44 mounted for sliding movements within the slot 2| in the barE, the main portion extending from the bottom of the slot not quite to the roots of the teeth 20, so as not to overlap the tooth interspaces. The lefthand end of the rod extends through the end plate 5 and is provided with an operating handle 45, engagement of which with the end plate 5 limits movement of the rod F to the right. The rod is formed adjacent-its right-hand end with an enlargement 46 provided with an `inclined cam edge41 and with atransverserecess forming a seat 46 adjacent the cam edge, the seat having inclined walls 46l and 48h. The righthandend of the rod F is provided with a strap 49 comprising a bottom 50 which extends across the bottom of 'he rod E, sides 5I which extend up alongside the sides of the bar E, and top portions 52 which are turned over to lie along the top of the bar E.
In operation, and assuming that the parts are.
in the positions shown in Figure 2 and that it is desired to position the stop D adjustably in any set position, the handle is grasped and the rod F is drawn tothe left until the cam edge 41 engages'. th e latch nose 36. In some instances, the frictional engagement of the spring 29 and U-shaped member 21 with the bar E may restrain the stop element D against movement to the left when the latch nose is engaged by the cam 41. Further movement of the rod F to the left will cam the latch nose downwardly, after which the latch nose will drop into the seat 45. 'Ihe opposed side walls 48i-48b of the seat 48 are inclined onza somewhat steeper slope than the cam edge 41, the slope of the side wall 46* being such that the urge of the latch spring 51 will be suiiicient to connect the stop element D releasably and frictionally to the rod F when the` rod is moved to the right. 'Ihe carriage will lthen be moved to the position at which it is desired it shall be arrested during return movements to fix the left-hand margin, this position being` determined by reference to registration of the pointer 53 on the type bar guide 5 with the proper scale designation on the cylinder scale I3. Then, to set the margin stop element D, the
rod F is pushed to the right as viewed in Figures 1 and 2 until the extension 30 engages the center stop I5. Continued movement of the rod F to the right will then cause the side wall 45IIL of the seat 48 to cam the latch nose downwardly, displacing it from the seat 48 and permitting it to ride up the inclined cam edge 41 and thereafter to engage between two adjacent teeth 26 on the bar E, thereby locking the stop element D to the bar E in the desired new position.
In some instances, when the rod F is first -moved to the left so as to release the latch from engagement with the toothed bar E, the friction of engagement of the element D with the bar E may. be small enough to permit the element D to be dragged toward the left without seating the latch nose in the seat 48. If this occurs, the
rod F is pulled further to the left until the stop element D engages a limiting 'abutment pin 54 on the carriage end plate 5 which will prevent Afurther movement of the stop element to the The modified form of rod G, shown in Figure 9, may be formed from a strip of metal or the like of uniform cross section throughout vits length. The desired formation is given the bar by bending it at 55 to provide a deformed portion having a cam edge 56 corresponding to the cam edge 41 on the rod F, previously described. The deformed portion also is formed with a transversely extending 'seat 51 adapted to functionsimilarly to the seat 45 in the rod F and the extreme outer end of the rod G is turned downwardly as at 58 for engagement with the stop element D to limit movement of the rod F to the left.
'Ihe right margin stop D' is similar to the left margin stop D already described, and it therefore is considered unnecessary to describe in detail the parts of the right-hand stop D', Similar or correspondingparts of the stops D and D are designated by similar reference characters, with the exception that the reference characters designating parts of the 'right-hand stop are primed. Thus, the U-shaped member 2l'-of the stop D' corresponds to the U-shaped member 21 of the stop D; the latch 32' corresponds to the latch I2,4 and so on. It will, of
course, be understood that both stops D and D' can be set manually when desired simply by depressing the finger knobs and 39'.
The mechanism disclosed herein embodies the invention ir: a practical and its at present preferred f orm, but it will be understood that various changes may be made without departing from the invention as defined in the claims.
I claim:
1. In a typewriting machine, a frame, a carriage mounted thereon for letter spacing movements; a stop supported on the frame; a cooperating stop supported on the carriage, one of said stopsbeing 'adjustable on its support in the direction ot carriage letter spacing movement; a member normally disconnected fromsaid adjustable stop mounted for movement longitudinally of said support; and means responsive to longitudinal movement of said member for releasably coupling said member to said adjustable stop for moving it along its support in the direction of letter spacing movement.
2. In a typewriting machine, a frame, a carriage mounted thereon for letter spacing movements; a stop supported on the frame; a cooperating stop supported on the carriage, one oi' said stops being adjustable -on its support in the direction oi' carriage letter spacing movement; releasable means for locking said adjustably mounted vstop in adjusted -position on its support; a member mounted for movement longitudinally of the direction of adjusting movement of said adjustably mounted stop and engageable at will with said releasable means` for releasing the latter; and means for releasably coupling said f member to said adjustably mounted stop for moving it along its support.
3. In a typewriting machine, a frame, a carriage mounted thereon for letter spacing movements; a stop supported on the frame, a cooperating stop supported on the carriage, one bf said stops being adjustable onits support in the direction of vcarriage letter spacing movement; a latch for releasably holding said adjustable stop in position on its support; a stop adjusting member movable in the direction of adjustment of said stop on its support and being connectable with said'stop for adjusting it along saidsupport: said member including a cam for releasing said latch, and means for releasablyv coupling said member to said adjustably mounted stop for moving it along its support.
4. In a typewriting machine, a frame, a carriage mounted thereon -for .letter spacing movements; a stop supported on the frame; a cooperating stop supported on the carriage, one of said stops being adjustable on its support yin the direction of carriage letter spacing movement; a latch for releasably holding said adjustable stop in position on its support; and stop. adjusting means movable in the direction oi adjustment of said stop on its support and being connectable with said stop for adjusting it along said support,
said means including a latch-releasing cam andA also including 4a part adapte-dto releasably interlock with said-A adjustable stop.
5. In a typewriting machine, a trame, ,a carriage mounted thereon for letter spacing movements; a stop supported on the -frame; a cooperating stop supported on the carriage, one ofsaid stops being adjustable on its support in the direction of carriage letter spacing movement; a latch for releasably holding said adjustable stop in position on its support; stop adjusting means movable .inthe direction oi.' adjustment. of said stop on its support and being connectable with ,said stopdor adjusting it along said support,
said means including a latch-releasing cam and also including apart adapted to releasably vinterlock withsaid adjustable stop; and means for limiting movement of said stop adjusting means relative to said bar-mounted stop. v
6. In a typewriting machine, a trame, a carriage mounted thereon for letter ,spacing movements; a stop supported on the trame; a cooperatlng stop supported on the carriage, one oi. said stops being -adjustable on its support in the direction of carriage' letter spacing movement;
releasable means on said adjustable stopfen holding said stop in adjusted position; and 'means movable in the direction of adjustment of said stop and includingl a cam for releasing said releasable means and apart adapted to'releasably interlock with said releasable means for moving the stop to adjusted position on its support.
. 7. In a-typewriting machine. a frame; a carriage mounted thereon for letter spacing movements; a bar on said carriage extending in the direction of carriage letter spacing movements; a stop on said frame; a cooperating stop mounted for adjustment along said bar; means for releasably holding said bar-mounted stop in adjusted position on said bar: and means movable lengthwise of the bar for adjusting the bar-mounted stop including a cam for releasing said releasable means and also including a part adapted to interlock releasably with a part on said bar-mounted stop for moving said stop along said bar. v
8. In a typewriting machine, a frame; a carriage mounted thereon for letter spacingmovements; a bar on said carriage extending in the releasable meansA and also including a part adapted to interlock releasably with a part on said bar-mounted stop ior moving said stop along said bar; and means 'for holding said parts interlocked but being yieldable to permit unlocking thereof when the bar-mounted stop is pushed` against said frame-mounted stop.
9. In a-typewriting machine, a frame, a carriage mounted thereon for letter spacing movements; a toothed bar on said carriage and extending in the direction of carriage letter spacing movements; a stop on said trame; a cooperating stop mounted for adjustment on said bar: a
latch on said bar-mounted stop ha'ving a nose engageable with selected teeth on said bar; a member mounted for movements longitudinally of the bar; a cam surface on said member engageable with said latch for disengaging said nose from the toothed bar; and means on said member adapted to connect releasably with said bar.- mounted stop element for moving the latter longitudinally of the bar.
10. In a typewriting machine, a frame, a carriage mounted thereon for letter spacing movements; a toothed bar on said carriage and extending in the direction of carriage letter spacing movements; a stop on said frame; a cooperating stop mounted for adjustment on said bar; a latch on said bar-mounted stop having a nose engageable with selected teeth on said bar; a member mounted for movements longitudinally of the bar; a cam on said member connectable withsaid latch for disengaging said nose from said bar; and a seat on said member for receiving and releasably interlocking with a part on said bar-mounted stop.
ll. In a typewriting machine, a frame, a carriage mounted thereon for letter spacing movements; a toothed bar on said carriage and extending in the direction of carriage letter spacl ing movements; a stop onvsaid frame; a cooperating stop mounted for adjustment on said bar; a latch on said bar-mounted stop having a nose engageable with selected teeth on said bar; a spring for yieldablyurging said latch nose -to bar-engaging position; a member mounted for movement longitudinally of the bar; a cam on said member engageable with said latch nose for disengaging it from said bar against the urge of said spring; and a seat on said member adjacent said cam for receiving said nose after it has been disengaged from said bar to releas- `ably interconnect the bar-mounted stop with said member for adjustment of the stop along the bar.

In a typewriting machine, a frame, a carriage mounted thereon for letterspacing movements; a toothed bar on said carriage and extending in t l e direction of carriage letter spacing moveme ts; a stop on said frame; 'a cooperating stop mountedv for adjustment on said `bar; a latch on said bar-mounted stop having a. nose engageable with selected teeth on said bar; a spring for yieldably urging said latch nose to bar-engaging position; a member mounted for movement longitudinally of the bar; a cam on said member engageable with` said latch nose for tdisengaging it from said bar against the urge of said spring; and a seat on said member adjacent said cam for-receiving said nose after it has been disengaged from said bar to releasably interconnect the bar-mounted stop with said member for adjustment of the stop along the bar, said seat comprising a notch or recess in said member and having an inclined edge whereby the latch nose'will be cammed out of said seat when the member is moved to press the barmounted stop against the frame-mounted stop..
13. In a typewriting machine, a frame element; a carriage element mounted thereon for u letter spacing movements;cooperating stops supported on said elements wpectively, the support for one of said stops comprising a toothed bar extending in the direction of letter spacing movement of the carrriage vand on which the 7 associated stop is slidably adjustable; a latch on said bar-mounted stop releasably engageable with selected teeth on the bar for maintaining said stop in adjusted position; a member mounted for movement along saidbanmeansL on said -member for releasing said latch: and means for releasably coupling said member to said barmounted stop for moving said stop along said bar.
14. In a typewriting machine, a vframe element; a carriage element mounted thereon for letter spacing movements; cooperating stops supported on said elements respectively, the support for one of said stops comprising a toothed bar extending in the direction of letter spacing movement of the carriage and on which the associated stop is slidably adjustable; a latch on said bar-mounted s top releasably engageable with selected teeth on the bar for maintaining said stop in adjusted position; a member mounted ior movement along said bar; means on said member for releasing said latch; and a seat on said member adaptedto receive a part connected to said bar-mounted stop for coupling said stop to said member.
15. In a typewriting machine, a frame element; a carriage element mounted thereon for letter spacing movements; cooperating stops supported on said elementsrespectively, the support for one of said stops comprising a toothed bar extending in the direction of letter spacing movement of the carriage and on which the associated stop is slidably adjustable; a latch on said bar-mounted stop; a spring urging said latch to engagement with said bar between adjacent teeth thereof for maintaining said stop in adjusted position; a member mounted for movement along said bar; a cam on said member adapted to engage said latch and release i from said bar against the urge of said'spring; and a seat on said member positioned to receive -said latch under the urge of said spring to couple said member to said bar-mounted stop.
16. In a typewriting machine, a frame element; a carriage element mounted thereon for letter spacing movements; cooperating stops supported onsaid elements respectively, the support for one of said stops comprising a toothed bar extending in the direction of letter, spacing movement of the carriage and on which the associated stop is slidably adjustable, said bar being longitudinally slotted inwardly from the face thereof on which the teeth are formed; a latch on said bar-mounted stop having a nose extending across the slot in the bar and being releasably engageable with selected teeth on the bar for maintaining said stop in adjusted position; a rod mounted for endwise movement in said slot; a cam face on said rod engageable with said latch nose for releasing the latch; and a seat on said rod for receiving said nose when thus released and for releasably coupling said bar-mounted stop to said rod.
x17. In a typewriting machine, a frame element;
a carriage elementlmounted thereonl for letter spacing movements; cooperatingjstops supported onsaid elements respectively, the support for one of said stops comprising a toothed bar extending in the direction of letter spacing movement of the carriage and on which the associated stop is slidably adjustable, said bar being longitudinally slotted inwardly from the face thereof on which the teeth are lformed; a latch on said bar-mounted stop having a nose extending across the slot o in the bar and being releasably engageable with selected teeth on the bar for maintaining said stop in adjusted position; a rod mounted for endwise movement in said slot; a cam face on said rod engageable with said latch nose for releasing the latch; a' seat on said rod for receiving said nose when thus released and for releasably coupling said bar-mounted stop to said rod; and
-armpits rod in both directions longitudinally of the bar.
18. In a typewriting machine, a frame element; a carriage element mountedthereon for letter spacing movements; cooperating stops supi ported on said elements respectively, the support for one oi" said stops comprising a toothed bar extending in thev direction of letter vspacing movement of the carriage and on which the associatecl stop is slidably adjustable, said bar being Vlongitudinally slotted inwardly fromthe face thereof on which the ,teeth are formed; 'a latch on said bar-mounted stop having a nose extending across the slot in the bar and beingreleasably engageable with selected teeth on'the bar for maintaining said stop in adjusted position; a rod mounted for endwise movement in said slot, a portionof said rod being disposed in said slot between the bottom of the slot and the roots of said teeth;' and an enlargement on said bar extending at least Ato the tops of said teeth and l comprising a cam engageable with said latch nose for releasing said latch.
19. In a typewriting machine', a',frame ele- `ment; va carriage element mounted thereon for letter spacing movements; cooperating stops supported on-said elements respectively, the sup' port for one of said'stops comprising a toothed bar extending in the direction of letter spacing movement of the carriage and on which the associated stop is slidably adjustable, said bar being longitudinally slotted inwardlyv from the face' thereof on which the teeth are formed; a latch on said bar-mounted stop having a nose extending across the slot in the bar and being releasably engageable with selected teeth on the bar for maintaining said stop in adjusted position;` and a rod mounted for endwise movement in said slot, a portion of said rod being disposed in said slot between the bottom'of said slot and the roots of said teeth, said bar having a deformed portion directed away from'the bottom of said slot and extending at least to the tops of said teeth and comprising a cam engageable with said latch nose for releasing said latch.
