Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LIPPMANN RAPHAEL, OF MEADVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 217,239, dated July 8,1879; application filed December 11, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LIPPMANN RAPHAEL, of the city of Meadville, in the county of Oraw ford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Means for SupplyingOil to Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
In the ordinary lamp the oil is supplied from a vessel below the burner, and when the vessel is full the best light is produced; but as the oil sinks away from the flame the light grows poorer. To remedy this is in part the object of my invention, as well as to give greater safety from explosion.
The drawing shows a vertical half-section of the entire device, A being a tank; B, a pipe connected with the bottom of A and terminating in the stop-cock O; D, a valve through the bottom of A, kept open by the spring E when not closed by the screw-stem F. G is an open cup, into which the oil is dropped from the stop-cock; and H, an overflow-pipe leading from G' into a pendent vessel, I. The cup G and disk M are rigidly connected by the arm J. The pipe K conducts the oil from the cup G to the wick-tube L, which needs only to be long enough and wide enough to hold the saturated Wick, and can be placed at any distance from the cup G.
The top of my wick-tube is just high enough to be on a level with the bottom of the overflow-pipe H, so as to have the oil at all times at the point that will give the best light.
I make the tank I to hold as much as the tank A, so that if through any neglect the cock should be left open all the oil will be caught below.
The valve D is designed to regulate the 110w of oil for a full flame, at all times, to any given burner. The cock 0 is designed to check the full flow when less light is needed.
I claim l. The cup G, overflow H, and tank I, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, in an oil-feeder to a lamp or lamps, of the tank A, pipe B, cock 0, valve D, cup Gr, pipe H, tank 1, bar J, pipe K, and wick-tube L, when made as described, and for the purpose specified.
LIPPMANN RAPHAEL.
