This invention relates to a wallpaper steamer and more particularly to a wallpaper steamer adapted to hold itself in an operating position either upon a ceiling or a wall.

The principal object of this invention is the provision of a wallpaper steamer, the support means of which is adjustable over a wide range, and `contains tension means for insuring the positioning of the steamer in any desirable location in this wide range.

A still further object of this invention is the provision of ball and socket joints at both ends of the adjustment sections of the wallpaper steamer which provide an unusually large area 5 of operation for the steamer from a single base location.

A still further object of this invention is the provision of a wallpaper steamer, the supporting stand of which is adjustable as to height in two on separate and distinct ranges.

A still further object of this invention is the provision of a wallpaper steamer, the supporting column of which is formed in an attractive, easy to use, and inexpensive manner.

'Ihe wallpaper steamer shown and described herein has been designed for use in removing wallpaper by steaming as is customary when several thicknesses of wallpaper are to be removed from a ceiling or wall.

It is well known that the wallpaper steaming devices known to the art are satisfactory in so far as the actual removal of the wallpaper is concerned.

This invention relates primarily to the support means for the wallpaper steaming device and has been designed so that upon its proper placement it will adequately support the wallpaper steamer in any position within a wide area.

While this device is normally used while placed o upon a plank supported by two stepladders or upon some other form of temporary scaffolding,

it has been designed so that it can be used when placed directly upon the floor of the room in which the wallpaper is being removed.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of con- 50 struction hereinafter described and claimed, it

In the drawing a side elevation of the device with parts in cross section is shown, with phantom views of portions of the device showing the 5 various positions in which it may be used.

By referring to the drawing it will be seen that the invention comprises a wallpaper steamer pan I which is provided with a suitable steam inlet and hose connection 2 and a handle 3 hav- 10 ing a tapered hole 4 therein. This tapered hole 4 is adapted to receive a supporting element. In this instance the supporting element comprises a plurality of tubular members and rods telescopically arranged between the said steamer pan I 15 and a base 5. This base 5 is provided with a rubber gripping surface 6 which is adapted to hold the supporting element securely on any surface. Centrally positioned upon this base 5 is a ball and socket assembly 1, the socket portion 20 of which is attached to the base 5 by means of screws 8, and the ball portion of which is formed on the lower end of a circular rod 9. Telescopically positioned upon the upper end of the rod 9 and maintained in position by means of an ad- 25 justrnent bolt I0 there is a tube II. Telescopically positioned around this tube II there is a secondary tube I2 which is positioned upon the tube II by means of a manually operated trigger I3 functioning in a plurality of openings I4 in 30 the tube II. This trigger I3 is held in position in one of the openings I4 by means of a coil spring I5. At a point Within and approximately at the middle of this secondary tube I2 there is positioned a collar I6 which is welded to or other- 35 wise affixed to the inner walls of this secondary tube I2, and serves as a seat for a coil spring I'I. Positioned within this coil spring I1 and extending downwardly into the upper end of the tube I l there is a secondary rod I 8, which is supported 40 in this position by means of a secondary collar I9 which is Welded or otherwise ailixed to the rod I8 and rests upon the top of the coil spring II. The rod I8 being oi suicient length to extend upwardly within and out of the top of the secondary tube I2 at which point a cap 20 having an opening formed therein serves as a suitable guide member. Positioned upon the upper end of this rod I8 there is a secondary ball and socket joint, the socket 2i of which is at- 50 tached to the rod I8 and the ball 22 of which is formed on a tapered plug 23 which is in turn adapted to t within the tapered hole 4 in the handle 3 of the steamer pan I.

It will be seen that the tension exerted by the coil spring Il will tend to force the secondary rod I8 upwardly, thus holding the steamer pan i securely against the ceiling or wall. The height of the support means may be varied through either of the adjustment means, for instance, the adjustment bolt Il] may be loosened and this ad justment used when using the steamer device with its base positioned upon the floor of a room while the trigger I3 forms a more con Venent means of adjustment which may be used when the device is positioned on a plank or scaiTold.

It is obvious that the support means will adequately support the steamer pan over a large area without the continual removal of the base portion of the device to a new location.

What I claim is:

l. A wallpaper steamer supporting device comprising a plurality1 or telescopically arranged tubular members and rods, ball and socket joints formed at opposite ends thereof, together with a base member positioned on one of the said ball and socket joints and a tapered plug formed upon the other one of the said ball and socket joints and adapted to engage a tapered opening in the handle of a wallpaper steamer, a coil spring positioned between one of the said plu rality of rods and one of the said plurality of members, and adapted to support under tension the said wallpaper steamer, substantially as described.

2 A Wallpaper steamer supporting device comprising a pair of telescopioally engaged tubular members the outer one of which is supported upon the inner one by means of a trigger like latch functioning in any one of a plurality of openings formed in the said inner tubular member, a pair of circular rods telescopically positioned within the said pair of tubular members, the said tubular members being supported upon one of the said rods by means of an adjustment bolt positioned in one of the said tubular members and adapted to engage the said rod, a collar formed in the outer one of the said tubular members at a central point and a coil spring positioned upon the said collar and carrying the other one of the said circular rods by means of a secondary collar formed upon the said rod and adapted to rest upon the said coil spring, in such manner that tension is exerted upon the said rods in opposite directions, ball and socket joints formed at the opposite ends of the said rods, one of which is attached to a base member and the other one of which is adapted to be attached to a Wallpaper steamer, substantially as described.
