This invention relates to new and useful improvements in mens vests.

More specifically, the invention proposes the Q construction of a mans vest which is charac- 5 terized by the provision of a combination shirt and vest front which when worn with street clothes appears to be of conventional construe-- tion, but in reality consists only of the shirt .front and vest front, and a means for holding lo the same upon the body.

Still further it is proposed vto construct the vest as a formal vest, a tuxedo shirt front; a shirt front, or a combination shirt and vest front according to this invention.

A further object of this invention is to provide a. belt portion for engaging the waist of a wearer and attached at the sides with said vest front for holding the. bottom portion of said vest in position.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the 25 invention are more particularly set'forth.

, The garment 55 further comprises a tuxedo shirt front I0 having lapel portions Iiia and to which a portion of a formal shirt II is attached. This formal shirt portion Il is securely attached to the edges of the formal vest i0 by means of stitches l2. It is the formal shirt II which is open along its center Ila forv permitting the garment to be placed upon the body. This opening is adapted to be closed by buttons or shirt studs I3.

The neck portion llb of the shirt front portion Ii is adapted to extend around the neck for supporting the top portion of the vest upon the body. This neck portion is in the form of a conventional formal collar and is attached to the top portion of the Vest. A belt portion l is securely attached at one side to one edge portion of the vest I 0 and is adapted to `extend around the waist for holding the bottom portion of the vest inv position upon the body. 1

A slide fastener l5 is provided'for releasably connecting the free end of the belt portion i6 to the free edge of the form vest lli for securely attaching this portion to the vest. A back panel i6 is formed integrally with the neck portion lib and extends across ones back and is connected at its bottom end to a portion of the belt portion I4 by means of stitches l'l. Thus when the form vest, constructed according to this invention, is positioned upon the body and a formal coat is worn therewith the vest gives the appearance of a formal .shirt and a formal ve'st, but in reality it is a combination formal vest portion and formal shirt portion.V

According to the modification shown in Fig. 5 the garment front consists of a vest portion i8 having a shirt portion I9 attached thereto in a manner similar to that described relative to Fig. 1. A neck portion I9b consisting of a slightly differently shaped colla-r is attached to the shirt front I9 and is adapted to extend around thel neck. The rear view of this garment is similar to that shown in' Fig. 2.- The difference between the garments is that the one shown in Fig. 1 is the formal vest while the one in Fig. 5 is a tuxedo shirt front and .has the vest and collar formed slightly different. l

According to the modification shown in Figs. 6 and 'I the garment front consists of a conventional shirt front 20 which is open from the neck its adjacent edges closed by a slide fastener 2l. An elastic .insert 24 is inserted into a portion of the belt portion 22 and is adapted to resiliently urge the belt portion into a position in which it will rigidly support the shirt front.

According to the modincation shown in Figs. 8 and 9 a shirt front 2l of conventional construction is oper. from the neckto the waist and is provided with buttons 26 for closing this opening. A neck portion 2Bl in the form` of a conventional collar is adapted to extend around one's neck.

A back panel 25h extends from the top of the shirt front 25 and passes to the back of the body and down to the waist. A belt portion 21 is secured at its front to the bottom edge of the shirt front 25 and. its back is attached to the bottom edge of the back panel 25. A slide fastener 28 is also provided for closingthe adjacent ends of the belt portion 21.

Straps 29 have their outer ends attached to a portion of the belt 21 by means of stitches Il and are adapted to have their adjacent ends adjustably connected together for adjusting .the diameter of the belt portion 21 so that it may be made to rigidly support the shirt front 2l.

According to the modification shown in Fig.

l10 a shirt front vest constructed from a conventional vest front ll has a conventional shirt front portion l2 inserted into the openportions thereof. Both the shirt front portion and the vest front are open from the neck portion to the waist and are adapted to be closed by buttons Il. In other respects this form of the4 invention is similar to that previously shown.

- In Fig. l1 a modification isshown in which a provision is made for controlling the amount of the belt portion 25 which will be drawn together when the straps It are adjusted. These straps 38 are secured to the belt portion at their outer ends and are adapted to have their inner ends adjusted for controlling the diameterof the belt portion Il. A means is 4provided for controlling the portion of the belt portion which will be drawn together by the straps 3l. This means comprises slide fasteners l1 which have one of their stringers attached to the top edges of the straps 38 and the other of their stringers attached to an adjacent portion of the belt II.

When the slide fasteners are vcompletely closed. as shown in Fig. 1l, and the straps 2l are drawn together the vest portion Il will only gather between the control slides Il used for opening and `elosing the'slide fasteners 31.

Thus the control slides I8 may be moved to any position along the length of the slide fasteners 31 to permit the waist portion to be gathered along a longer or narrower portion of the belt portion 3l when the straps ll are together. 1

In other respects this form of the invention is similar to the previous forms and similar parts may be identined by corresponding reference numerals.

While I have illustrated and described the preguesses ferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in'the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by` United States Letters Patent is:

1. In a. mans vest 4a combination garment, comprising a garment front for extending from one's neck to one's waist along the front of one's body and openableA from the neck down along'its center, a neck portion connected with said front for extending about one's neck, a belt portion extending from the sides of said garment front at the waist line and opened at one side, and a slide fastener for closing said belt, straps attached at their outer end to said belt portion, means for adjustably attaching together the-inner ends of said straps so that said inner ends may be adjusted for controlling the diameter of said belt portion for rigidly supporting said vest, and means on said straps and cooperating means on the belt portion to shorten the effective length of the straps for controlling the amount lof saidbelt portion which will be gathered when said straps are adjusted.

42. In a man's vest a combination garment. comprising a garment front for 'extending from ones neck to one's waist along the front of one's body and openable from the neck down along its center, a neck portion connected with said front for extending about one's neck. a belt portion extending from the sides of said garment front at the waist line and opened at one side, and a slide fastener for closing said belt, straps attached at their outer ends to said belt portion, means for adjustably attaching. together the inner ends of said straps so that said inner ends may be adjusted for controlling the diameter of said belt p'ortion for rigidly supporting said vest, and means on said straps for controlling the amount of saidbdt portion which will be gathered when said straps are adjusted, said means comprising slide fasteners having oneof their stringers attached to the edgeportions of said straps and having the other *of their stringers attached to said belt portions, and control slides for opening and closing said slide fasteners for controlling the gathered portion of said belt portion.

3. In a man's vest, straps having their outer ends attached to the back portion of said garand control slides for opening and closing said slide fasteners to`control the amount of said back portion thatwill be gathered when said straps are adJusted to reduce the diameter of said waistline.
