1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in caps for bottles, and the present disclosure is directed to such a device which will obviate the necessity of using special instruments for removing the cap from the bottle.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is made of metal, and is provided with an integrally formed tab for removing the cap.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will permanently and tightly close a bottle, and may be easily removed from the bottle without chipping or breaking the bottle neck.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a bottle cap or closure which is durable in construction, efficient in operation and because of its extreme simplicity will be inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become more apparent during the course of the following description.
with the foregoing in view the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the top of a bottle neck with my improved bottle cap or closure applied thereon.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1, taken at right angles thereto, and illustrating the manner of removing the cap when in use.
Figure 3. is a perspective view of the device constructed in accordance with the principles of my invention.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 4 designates a metal cap having a crown 5 and an integral down wardly extending annular flange t which is vertically crimped throughout its entire circumference, and this flange is adapted to engage the usual head or shoulder of a bottle B. Depend ing from the crown 5 of the. cap 4 is a tab I which is an integral part of the cap, and this tab serves to tear the cap in a manner more fully hereinafter described. The central part of the tab 1 is punched out to define a tongue 8 5 which is extended outwardly from the tab and serves as a grip for raising the tab to remove the cap from the bottle neck. Adjacent the tab I the flange 6 is slightly out as at 9 with vertical indentations, which extend from the crown u 5 to the edge of the flange 6. These indentations serve as starting means for tearing thev cap 4. In practice I have found it practical to form the indentations on the inner and outer sides of the flange 6 which permits easy tearing, yet will not weaken the cap. On the respective sides of the tab 1 at the juncture adjacent the crown I have found it practical to place an incision completely'through the tab and crown as at It) to provide a starting means incident to the tearing of the device. 10
In the operation of the device the cap assumes the position as shown in Figure 1 of the drawing. When it is desired to remove the cap 4 from the bottle neck the operator simply punches the tongue 8 outwardly asshown in Figure 3 and 15 grasps the tongue raising the tab 1 upwardly as shown in dotted lines and clearly illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawing. Since excellent results are obtained from the 35 details disclosed, they are preferably followed. However, within the scope of the claimed invention numerous qualifications may of course be made. a
I claim: v 40 A bottle cap comprising a crown portion, an annular flange depending from said crown and adapted to fit over the neck of a bottle, an integral depending tab disposed at right angles to said flange, said tab being centrally punched 45 to define an opening to afford gripping means, and an auxiliary tongue punched .from said tab for manually operating the tab, said flange having a series of vertical indentations disposed on the inner and outer sides thereof, and adjacent the edges of said tab to afford means for severing the respective ends of saidfiange for removing said cap from said bottle.
