'i'4349) Suchcomputing registering mechanism includes means for indicating any ,selected price basis of the computation, means 'for indicating the volume of liquid dispensed at each operation, 10 in gallons and fractions of a gallon; means for computing and registering the value of the volume dispensed at each dispensing operation in cents and fractions of a cent; and means for indicating such value. tated by and in accordance with the operation of a meter by the passage through the latter of the liquid to be dispensed and the change speed mechanism herein claimed connects that driv- 20 ing element with a driven element which actuates the computing registering mechanism indicators, and is adapted to be manually changed in accordance with each change in the price basis of the computation, to wit, the price per 25 gallon of the liquid dispensed. The rocker frame 33 which holds said blade 3|, in its slot 33, is axially movable on said'shaft 32 with said selector gear. 34.
As shown in Fig. III, the cylinder 23 is rigidly connected with the price indicating dial 2| by which itmay be manually turned, and includes aplurality of slots 33 in its circumference spaced both circumferentially and axially in accordance with respective prices indicated on said dial. Thatconstruction and arrangement are such that in order to set the change speed mechanism for a selected price, the operator must turn the blade 3| clockwise from the position shown in fulllines in-Fig. II to. the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. II, to disengage said blade from the cylinder 29. That turning movement, of ninety degrees, presents the flattened portion of the shaft 32 toward the detent lever 32' and thus permits the spring 32" of said lever to uplift it from the position shown in full lines in Fig. II-to the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 11, in which its pointed right hand end is engaged between adjoining teeth of the detent gear 12 to prevent turning movement of said gear by its shaft 14.
Said shaft 32 is the pivot of the rocker frame 33 which carries the selector gear 34, so that with theblade 3I-thus uplifted, clockwise, in Fig. II, said gear may be manually lifted by tilting said\ frame 33 counter-clockwise,' and he slid axially to present said gear 34 in mesh with any two opposite gears in the two conical assemblages of gears 36 and 31, which are disposed for cooperation, to effect correct computation with reference to that selected price.
Whensaid blade 3|"is lowered to the position shown in full lines in Fig. II, and in dotted lines in Fig. IV, said shaft 32 is turned so that its flattened eccentric portion pushes said lever 32' downward to the position shown in full lines in. Figs. II and IV in which it is then held, by the concentric portion of said shaft, out of engagement with the teeth of said detent gear 12. I
As shown in Fig. III, said assemblage of *gears' 36 is keyed in rigid connection with the sleeve 36 which is journaled on said shaft 8, as shown in Fig. III, and is connected by a train of gearing so as to be'driven by the shaft ll of the conical assemblage of gears l3, 14, which represent whole cents of the price. As indicated in Fig. II; that. .train includes the pinion II on said shaft II,
which pinion adjoins 'the intermediate. housing frame plate 39 in which the left-hand end of said shaft H is journaled, as shown in' Fig. III. Said pinion H is in mesh with the idle gear 40 journaled on the stationary stud 39' fixed in said frame 33. Said gear 46 is in mesh with the gear 4| which is rigidly connected with the sleeve 42 which is loosely journaled on the shaft 43. Said sleeve 42 has at itsleft hand end with reference to Fig. III, the gear 45 which is in mesh with the left hand end gear of theassemblage 36. As shown in Fig. III, said shaft ll carries the gearv 16 in mesh with the gear 9 carried by the sleeve 7 1 which is journaled on the shaft 6. Said sleeve 1 has rigidly connected therewith the bevel gear 6 in mesh with'the bevel gear 5 on the shaft 3 which'has the cross pin 2 connecting it with the meter shaft l which is thus connected to rotate 51 of the'planetary gear train shown in section in Fig. III.
Said planetary gear train includes the sun gear 7 52, which is fixed on the left hand'shaft end of the long pinion l5 and is in mesh with-the pair of diametrically opposite planetary gears 53 which are respectively journaled on studs 53'- fixed in said c'arrier'gear 5| atone end and in the ring 51; at the other end, asshown in Fig. III. Said planetary gears 53 are in mesh with the respective gears of a diametrically opposite pair 54, shown in section in Fig. I.I I, which are journaled on studs 54' fixed in said carrier gear 51 at their-right hand .endsshown in Fig. III and which "are fixed at their left hand ends in the carrier ring 51-.
As shown in Fig. III, said planetary gears 54 are by the passage of liquid j coaxial relation with said long pinion I5 and first sun gear 52.
As shown in Fig. lIL-said'sun gear 56 is rigidly connected with the shaft 56 which is journaled at its right hand end in said first sun gear 52 and at its left hand end in the housing end frame plate 41. As shown in Fig. II, said shaft 56' has rigidly connected therewith the pinion 51 in mesh with the idle gear 56 journaled on the stud shaft 59 fixed in said housing frame plate 41. Said idle gear 58 has in unitary relation therewith the gear 60, which is in mesh with the gear 6| shown in section in Fig, III. As shown in Fig. III, said gear 6| is carried by the sleeve 62 journaled on the shaft 63 and which is rigidly connected with the cents dial 64 shown in section in Fig. III; said dial 64 is operatively connected with the opposite counterpart dial 65 at the oppo- 'site, right hand, side of the mechanism shown in Fig. III; Said gear 6| is only frictionally engaged with said sleeve 62 by the spring 62?,
shown in Fig. III, to permit said cents dials 64 and 65 to be set back to zero position.
The hub 64' of said cents dial 64 is provided with double gears 16, shown in section in Fig. III.
Said gears 16 are in mesh with said detent gear ,12 which is rigidly connected with the shaft 14 application Serial No. 145,056 which has been restricted to said zeroizing means.
As indicated in Fig. III, said slotted cylindrical element 29 is in coaxial relation with another similar element 20 having slots 22 adapted to be selectively engaged by the blade 18 on the rocker frame l1 for selectively connecting the selector gear l6 with said conical gear assemblage l3, l4. However, such construction and arrangement is the subject matterof Letters Patent of the United States No. 2,106,686 granted January 25,

The combination with a driving element; of change-speed mechanism, operatively connected gear, a conical assemblage of gears, in coaxial relation; a selector gear, adjustable axially, parallel with the axis of said gear assemblage, and transversely thereto, for selective connection with any gear in said assemblage; locking means for said change-speed mechanism, including a spring pressed detent lever for engaging teeth of said detent gear, and thereby rendering said'changespeed mechanism inoperative unless and until said selector gear is properly engaged with any of the gears of said assemblage; means for releasing said detent lever from engagement with the teeth of said detent gear, consequent upon proper engagement of said selector gear with any gear of said assemblage, including a shaft, supgear, consequent upon proper engagement of said flattened eccentric portion and a concentric cylindrical portion, alternately presentable in regdetent gear by its spring, when the eccentric porwith said driving element, and including a detent porting said selector gear and having an eccentric for cooperation w th said detent lever by rotation of said shaft, said detent lever being engaged with said detent gear by its spring,'when the least radius of said eccentric is presented to 5 said lever, and displaced from engagement with said detent gear when the greatest radius of said eccentric is presented to said detent lever; and means for manually turning said shaft, including a rocker frame axially movable on said shaft with said selector gear.
3. The combination with a driving element; of change-speed mechanism, operatively connected with said driving element, and including a detent gear, an assemblage of gears of different sizes, in coaxial relation; a selector gear, adjustable axially, parallel with the axis of said gear assemblage, and transversely thereto, for selective connection with any gear in said assemblage; locking means for said change-speed mechanism, includinga spring pressed detent lever for engaging teeth of said detent gear, and thereby rendering said change-speed mechanism-inoperative unless and until said selector gear is properly engaged with any of the gears of said assemblage; and means for releasing said detent lever from engagement with the teeth of said detent gear, consequent upon proper engagement of said selector gear with any gear of said assemblage, including a shaft, supporting said selector gear and having an eccentric for cooperation with said detent lever by rotation of said shaft; said detent lever being alternately engaged with said detent gear by its spring, and displaced from engagement with said .detent gear, by turning movement of saidshaft;
and means for manually turning said shaft, including a rocker framemovable on said shaft with said selector gear.
