This invention relates broadly to drafting tools and an object of the invention is to provide a tool which will be found useful to drafting engineers, civil engineers, mechanical engineers, and the like, and which embody in-a single instrument a T-square, a straight edge rule, an adjustable rule, protractors, and index or degree arms pivotally associated with the protractors, the whole embodying a convenient combination and arrangement of such elements to the end that the device will be capable of numerous uses well-known to those skilled in the art.
The invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan View of the tool.
Figure 2 is an edge elevational view thereof.
Figures 3 and 4 are detail views partly in section and partly in elevation illustrating certain details hereinafter more fully referred to.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a socket plate hereinafter more fully referred to.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a clamp with the clamp screw thereof omitted.
Figure '7 is a detail sectional view showing the manner of securing a graduated rule of the T- 7 square.
Figure 8 is a view similar to Figure l and illustrating a slightly modified form of the invention.
Figure 9 is an edge elevational view of the invention shown in Figure 8.
Figure 10 is a detail sectional view taken substantially on the line I0l0 of Figure 8.
Referring to the drawings more in detail it will be seen that in accordance with the present invention the tool comprises a substantially conventional T-square 5 embodying the usual crosshead 6 and blade 1.
Suitably mounted on one face of the blade I and longitudinally spaced on the blade are blocks 8-8.
Secured through the medium of screws or other suitable fastening elements 9 to the blocks 8 are protractors Hi.
In the form of the invention shown in Figures 1 to 7, inclusive, there is provided for each protractor It! a longitudinally tapering index or degree arm II that is pivoted adjacent one end thereof to an associated block 8 as at l2.
Also at the pivoted end thereof each arm II is provided with a thumb screw [3 that is adapted to be screwed home into binding engagement with the associated block 8 for securing the index or degree arm II at the desired position of adjustment. 1
Also, mounted on the blade 1 and disposed between the blocks 8 to extend longitudinally of the blade 1 is a straight edge rule 14.
The rule i4 is provided with a column [5 graduated in terms of inches; a column I6 graduated in terms of square inches, a column I! graduated in terms of sixteenths of an inch, and a column 3 graduated in terms of thirty-seconds of an inch.
For securing the rule I4 on the blade I there are provided a pair of plates I9 which are riveted, or otherwise secured as at 28 to the blocks 8 at the inner edges of the blocks and are provided with sockets 2| which receive the ends of the rule l4 in a manner clearly shown in Figure '7. It will thus be seen that the rule 14 is supported on the blade 1 in spaced relation thereto in order to accommodate a clamp 22 through the medium of which an. adjustable rule 23 is held in association with the rule l4 and at the desired position of adjustment on the rule M.
In connection with the above it will be seen that the clamp 22 extends transversely of the blade l4 between the blade I i and the. blade 1 and at one end is equipped with a hook 24 which engages in a suitable opening 25 provided therefor in the rule 23. At the opposite end thereof the clamp 22 is provided with a hook 26 which engages over an end edge of the rule 23 and a longitudinal edge of the rule M. The hook 26 has associated therewith a screw 21 that is adapted to be threaded home into binding engagement with the rule 23 for binding the rule against the rule l4 and thereby securing the rule 23 at the desired position of adjustment on the rule l4.
In the form of the invention shown in Figures 8 to 10 inclusive, the index arms, therein indicated by the reference numeral Ila, are rectangular and of uniform width throughout the length thereof. Also in this form of the invention the arms Ila may be provided with eyes 28 through which the graduations of the protractors Illa. may be viewed for reading the arm Ila against the graduations of a protractor.
Also, in this form of the invention it will be noted that the blocks 80!. at the edges thereof accommodating the socket-equipped plates l9a are rabbeted so as to accommodate these plates l9a flush with the top surfaces of the blocks 8a. Thus with the plates |9aflush with the upper surfaces of the blocks 8a they will in nowise interfere with a complete swinging movement of the index arms I la into parallelism with the blade 1 of the T-square.
Also, in accordance with this second form, of the invention, the adjustable rule 23a is oblong and of uniform Width throughout its length.
Further, in accordance with the second form of the invention, the clamp 22a as best shown in Figure 10 instead of being provided with a set screw such as the set screw 21 for binding the rule against the rule [4a and thereby secure the rule 23a at the desired position of adjustment relative to the rule 14a, is provided With a suitable spring 29 anchored thereto and bearing against the clamping end 231) of the rule 23a for cooperation with the clamp 22a to thereby secure, in a frictional manner, the rule 23a at the desired position of adjustment.
Also, and as best shown in Figure 10, the rule 23a has the clamping end 231) thereof offset from the plane of the rule 23a so that the rule 23a ex-" tends laterally from the blade 1 of the T-square substantially coplanar with the underface of the blade 1 to thereby rest flatly on the surface being marked.
5 From the above it will be seen that I have provided as a unit a T-square, straight rule, protractors, and adjustable rule so arranged as to permit any desired part or parts thereof to be used with facility and without interference from the other parts not being used; and that the device will provide an efiicient tool for drafting purposes and to be used by drafting engineers, civil engineers, mechanical engineers, and the like.
It is thought that a clear understanding of the construction, utility and advantages of an invention of this character will be had Without a more detailed description.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:
1. In a tool of the class described, a T-square, a pair of longitudinally spaced blocks mounted on one face of the blade of the square, a graduated straight edge having its ends connected with the blocks and extending longitudinally of the blade in spaces. relation to the blade, protractors mounted onsaid blocks at opposite ends of the straight edge, index arms for the protractors pivotally mounted on the blocks in operative position to the protractors, a second rule extending at right angles to said straight edge, and a clamp device engaging the second rule and the straight edge for securing the second rule to the straight edge for sliding movement therealong and for securing the second rule at the desired position of adjustment relative to the straight edge.
2. In a tool of the class described, a T-square, a pair of longitudinally spaced blocks mounted on the T-square, plates secured to the blocks and provided with sockets, a graduated straight edge having the ends thereof arranged in said sockets and supported longitudinally of the T-square blade in spaced parallelism thereto.
3. In a tool of the class described, a T-square, a pair of longitudinally spaced blocks mounted on the T-square, plates secured to the blocks and provided with sockets, a graduated straight edge having the ends thereof arranged in said sockets and supported longitudinally of the T-square blade in spaced parallelism thereto, protractors mounted on said blocks, index arms for the protractors pivoted to the blocks and provided with means for securing said arms at the desired position of angular adjustment.
4. In a tool of the class described, a T-square, a pair of longitudinally spaced blocks mounted on the T-square, plates secured to the blocks and provided with sockets, a graduated straight edge having the ends thereof arranged in said sockets and supported longitudinally of the T-square blade in spaced parallelism thereto, pro-tractors mounted on said blocks, index arms for the protractors pivoted to the blocks and provided with means for securing said arms at the desired position of angular adjustment, and a second rule extending at right angles to the straight edge and mounted thereon for longitudinal adjustment.
5. In a tool of the class described, a T-square, a pair of longitudinally spaced blocks mounted on the T-square, plates secured to the blocks and provided with sockets, a graduated straight edge having the ends thereof arranged in said sockets and supported longitudinally of the T-square blade in spaced parallelism thereto, protractors mounted on said blocks, index arms for the protractors pivoted to the blocks and provided with means for securing said arms at the desired position of angular adjustment, anda second rule extending at right angles to the straight edge and mounted thereon for longitudinal adjustment, and a friction clamping device associated with the second rule and engaging the straight edge for securing the second rule at the desired position of adjustment longitudinally of the straight edge.
