The present invention relates to a display carton for fly swatters of the type having a handle upon which is mounted a screen fly-killing portion, and has as a principal object the provision of an improved type of carton by which a plurality of fly swatters may be displayed at the same time through sides of the carton and another fly swatter can be seen through an opening in the carton.

An additional object is to provide a carton of the type described in which the fly swatter having a relatively long handle can be mounted through the side of a box and then retained in display position. 5 Still another object of the invention is the provision of a carton of this general type having improved bottom locking mechanism which will retain the contents of the carton in position even when the contents rest directly on the bottom upon suspension of the carton.

These and other objects will be observed from a consideration of the following description of a preferred embodiment of the invention and by reference to the accompanying drawing in which:

Fig. l is a plan view showing a carton in a simple position with a plurality of fly swatters being displayed;

Fig. 2 is a side view of the carton shown in Fig. 1 with the fly swatters removed;

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary bottom view showing operation of the bottom locking mechanism;

Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken along line 4-4 of Fig. 3; and

Fig. 5 is a plan view of the blank from which the improved carton is constructed.

In the production of the improved carton a suitable piece of paperboard is cut and scored to form the blank of Fig. 5. The outside strip of the blank forming one of the sides of the carton is indicated at ID. This side portion has a top end closure flap II and a bottom end closure flap l2. Suitably positioned in the side member is a relatively narrow longitudinally extending slot l3. Below slot I3 is a second slot M which terminates at its upper end in a relatively large circular opening I5, the purpose of which will be described hereafter.

Side portion I E! is joined to the front section l6 along a score line ll. At the top of the n front section it there is provided a removable section l8 joined to the front l6 along a V- shaped perforated line [9. Score line I1 likewise is perforated adjacent the removable section l8. At the lower end of the front section it; I5 is the bottom closure flap which has a closure flap 2i and a slot 22 running along the score line by which the closure flap is joined to the bottom.

The other side portion 23 is joined to the front along score line 2d, the latter being perforated adjacent the removable section IS. The side section 23 has an upper closure flap 25 and a lower closure flap 2%. Also a longitudinal slot 21 is cut in the side section in a position corresponding to the position of slot l3. Slot 28 in the side section 23 terminates in an upper circular opening 29, the slot and opening being in a position corresponding to the position of slot l4 and opening Hi.

The rear section 30 is joined to side section 23 15 along a score line 3|. At the upper portion of the rear section 39 is a top section 32 having a closure flap 33. The top has an opening 34 and the closure fiap has an opening 35 which registers with the opening 34 when the closure flap is folded along a score line by which it is attached to the top as shown in Fig. 2.

At the bottom of rear wall 30 is a closure tongue 35 having a score line 37 along a line of the lower edge of back section 39. The closure tongue extends into the rear section 30 and is joined thereto along a score line 38.

The attaching section 39 is joined to rear section 30 along score line 40 and has cut away portions ll and 42 corresponding to the slots I3, 30 I4 and [5.

In the assembly of the carton the blank is folded along score lines i124, 3i and 40 and attaching strip 39 is glued to the side section it. The bottom is closed by folding closure flaps I2 35 and 26 into horizontal position and pressing the closure flap 2! downwardly adjacent the rear wall. The tongue 36 is bent downwardly along score line 38 and inwardly along score line 31 until the tongue registers with slot 22. The closure of the bottom is completed by insertion of the tongue through slot 22 as shown in Fig. 4.

The fly swatters are placed in the carton and. the top is clcsed by folding flaps ii and 25 into horizontal position and pressing closure flap 33 45 of the top downwardly along the front wall.

When the dealer opens the carton for diplay of the fly swatters the top of the carton is folded into vertical position and the closure flap 33 is folded over alongside the top so that holes 34- and 35 are in register, the carton then being hung on a suitable nail or other hanger. The removable display section I8 then is torn along the perforated lines by which it is joined to the sides and front and is removed to display the fly swatters.

Ordinarily a dozen fly swatters will be placed in a single container. In Fig. 1 the operation of the carton for display purposes is disclosed. On the left side of the drawing a fly swatter is indicated at 43, a similar fly swatter 44 being shown on the right side of the carton. The fly swatter 45 appearing in the center of the carton will be the front of a stack of fly swatters contained in the carton until the supply is exhausted. For sales purposes the swatter 45 is removed and the next adjacent fly swatter takes its place in the display. To provide the display one of the fly swatters is removed from the carton and the relatively large handle portion is pressed downwardly at an angle through the opening 29. As the handle of the fly swatter approaches the bottom of the carton the shaft of the swatter slips into slot 28. The final position of the swatter is reached when the corner of the swatter passes t'er being maintained in position by engagement of a corner portion with the slot l3.

In suspended position a considerable weight is placed upon the bottom of the carton, but this weight adequately is supported by the locking elements described, thereby maintaining the displayed swatters in proper position and preventing excessive weight upon the slots l3 and 27.

It will be readily recognized that many changes may be made in the specific elements described and shown in the drawing without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the'appended claims.

I claim:

1. A fly swatter display container, comprising a front wall, a back wall, and side walls, said side walls having upper openings for engagement with the swatter portion of fly swatters and lower openings for receiving the angularly disposed handles of fly swatters and positioned to provide engagement of the edges of fly swatters with said upper openings. I

A fly swatter display container, comprising front and rear walls provided with means for suspending the container adjacent one end and a supporting bottom section on the other end, and side walls extending between said front and rear walls, said side sections having upper vertical slots for receiving the swatter portion of fly swatters and lower handle-receiving openings positioned to provide for engagement of the edges of fly swatters with said upper slots.
