Description
G. L. 8r G. BARTHOLOMEW.
Lamp-Chimney.
No. 215,735. Patented May 27, 1879.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIGE.
CHARLES L. BARTHOLOMEW AND .GASSIUS BARTHOLOMEW,
OHIO.
on NEWARK,
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-CHIMNEYS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 215,785, dated May 27, 1879; application filed February 21, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHAS. L. BARTHOLO- MEW and GAssIUs BARTHOLOMEW, of Newark, in the county of Lickingand State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Chimneys; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section.
Similar letters of. reference denote. corresponding parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to lamp-chimneys; and its object is to adapt a lamp-chimney for attachment to burners of difierent construction, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, A represents the body of the chimney, which may be of any desired shape. At its lower end it has the neck 13, which is cylindrical in shape, and the length and diameter of which may be varied to any desired extent, so as to fit various sizes of that class of burners which are provided with upwardly-projecting flat springs or fingers to hold the chimney. At the extreme lower end of the neck B is formed a crease or annular indentation, O, by which the chimney is adapted for attachment to that class of burners in which small clamps and a set-screw are used for securing it in position.
It will be observed that the flange D of the crease or indentation C does not at any point project beyond the periphery of the cylindrical neck. This is in order to avoid all possibility of interfering with the holding springs or fingers when a burner having such is used.
In the patent to Drake, March 19, 1878, a lamp-chimney is shown the neck or lower section of which is provided with an annular corrugation or crease placed about midway upon said neck. This, however, does not render the chimney capable of being attached to other burners than those provided with holding springs or fingers, and no such advantage is claimed for said chimney. We place the crease or corrugation at the lower end of the neck, and thus accomplish the object of our invention.
Our invention can be produced at a cost not exceeding that of lamp-chimneys of the oldfashioned construction, which are capable of being used with but one kind of burner.
Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- As an article of manufacture, a lamp-chimney having a cylindrical neck, provided at its extreme lower end with a crease or annular indentation, the flange of which does not at any point project beyond the periphery of the cylindrical neck, as set forth. I
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES L. BARTHOLOMEW. OASSIUS BARTHOLOMEW.
