Description
R, C. BOWEN April 4, 1939.
BX CABLE CUTTER Filed April 5, 1937 v INVENTOR. Hugsefl C Bowen.
A TTORNEYS.
Patented Apr. 4, 19 39 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to BX cable cutting devices, comprising two bars pivoted together, the longer ends to be used for a handle, while the shorter ends of said bars are provided with cutting jaws, to act as shears, one jaw being longer than the other and provided with a notch near the end of the cutting face so that the shorter jaw which is positioned inside the cable will cut outwardly to thereby prevent the formation of a bur on the inside of said cable.
Another object is to provide a tool with a blunt end to prevent same from working through the operators pocket when not in use.
A further object is the provision of a cutting device having one jaw shorter and of wedge form provided with a projection on the back near the point to drag out the wrapping from around the wires.
Another object is the provision of a cutting device provided with a semi-circle in the handle near the pivoting point, for crimping.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side view of the BX cable cutter in operation.
Fig. 2 shows the same after removal from operation.
Fig. 3 shows a piece of BX cable bent so as to insert the cutting device to cut the cable, which is made of soft metal.
In the past this cable has been cut by the use of a hack saw, which caused injury to the wire. In the long jaw numeral I9, I have provided a notch 12 in the cutting face to cause a clean cut oif of the cable. Also said jaw is provided with a blunt end so same will not work through the pocket of the operator when not in use.
In the shorter jaw 14, which is of wedge form, to tighten the cable against the cutting face before cutting same, said jaw is provided with a hook I6 in the back near the point to drag out wrappings which are around the wire to prevent a short circuit with the cable. Numeral I8 indicates the wrappings around the wire -20. Numerals 22, 22 are the handle bars. Numeral 24 indicates the crimper, and numeral 26 indicates the pivot pin. 10
In operation, the BX cable is bent until one side is broken as shown in Figure 3. After breaking the cable, the shorter jaw is inserted therein as shown in Fig. 1, the notch in the longer jaw I0 acting as an indicator of where the end of the lower jaw is located, and the blunt end of jaw 10 beyond the notch I2 resting on the outer side of the cable. The handle bars are then pressed together with the shorter jaw 14 cutting outwardly toward the longer jaw so that a clean cut with no- 20 bur on the inside of the cab-1e is thereby produced.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my invention in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare: what I claim is:
In a BX cable cutter comprising two levers pivoted together intermediate their ends to provide long and short portions, the longer portions being used as handles and the shorter portions being sharpened to be used as shear jaws, one jaw being 30 longer than the other and having a blunt end portion extending" beyond the end of the shorter jaw, and the longer jaw being" provided with a notch in its cutting face to locate the end of the shorter jaw.
RUSSELL c. BOWEN.
