Description

J. P. ,HEIZER. Combined Bread-Rais: and Fruit- Drier.
No, 215,276. Paented May 13,1879.
N4 PETERS, PNOTO-LITI'IOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON, D, C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES FRANCIS HEIZER, or OHUBCHVILLE, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED BREAD-RAISER AND FRUIT-DRIER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 215,276, dated May 13, 1879; application filed March 22, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J. FRANK HEIZER, of Uhurchville, in the county of Augusta and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Bread- Raiser and Fruit-Drier, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention relates to a-box or receptacle arranged adj ustably over a stove or heater,
' for the purposes of drying fruits and vegeta- 0, provided with rings or eyes (I d, is suspended. A band, E, wound upon roller B, has its end secured to roller A, and a band, F, wound upon the latter, has its end secured to a roller, D, mounted in suitable bearings upon one side of box 0. Roller D is operated by a crank, G, and it is provided with a ratchet-wheel, H, engaging a pawl, I, hinged upon the box.
By operating the crank of roller D the band F is wound upon the latter, thus tending to elevate the end of the box having the roller. By the pressure thus exerted, however, the roller A, upon which the upper end of band F is wound, is revolved, thus winding the ends of the bands at a upon said roller A.
By this same operation the band E is also wound upon roller A, thus rotating the roller B, (from which it is unwound,) and causing the bands b b to be wound upon the latter.
a cooking or other stove or heater.
It will thusbe seen that the rollers A B are rotated simultaneously, the bands at a b b bein g thus simultaneously wound upon said rollers, the effect of which is to gradually and evenly elevate the box to any desired position, in which it is held by the pawl I engaging ratchet H.
By disengaging the pawl the operation may be reversed and the box lowered.
The'bottom of the box 0 is formed of wire net-work, perforated sheet metal, or other suitable open or perforated material which will admit dry hot air; and the box is provided with a hinged cover.
The box 0 is to be arranged under the ceiling of a room or kitchen, and directly above Fruit or other articles to be dried or dough to be raised is placed in the box, which may then, by the mechanism above referred to, be adjusted at any desired elevation above the stove, thus subjecting its contents to any desired degree of heat.
When not in use the box may be raised to the ceiling, thus bringing it out of the way.
The advantages of my invention will be readily understood. It is simple, may be constructed at a small expense, and. articles placed in the box for the purposes above mentioned cannot possibly be scorched or otherwise damaged.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination, with the rollers A B, having bands to a. b b, of the box 0, secured to the ends of said bands, and having roller JD, provided with ratchet-wheel H and crank G and pawl Land the bands E F, the whole arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto afixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES FRANCIS HEIZER.
Witnesses: J OHN N. HURDREVE,
THos. D. Woonwnnn.
