Specification of Letters Patent No. 21,526, dated September 14, 1858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM TOBEY, of Naples, in the county of Ontario and State of New York, have invented a new and improved mode of opening and shutting gates by means of hangings or eccentric levers, which work with but little friction, avoid all chance of sagging or settling, require but a light power to operate the gates, and in opening or shutting elevate the gate, so as to avoid any obstruction by snow or otherwise that may have accumulated under the gate; and I do hereby declare the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the manner in which the gates are suspended upon and propelled by the eccentric levers or parallelograins D D combining thereby the advantages above stated.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Take a sill or bed piece A, and frame to it the posts or standards, B, B, and then to the gate C, attach one end of the parallelograms or eccentric levers D, D, by the pivots or pins E E and attach the other end of the parallelograms or eccentric levers to the standards or posts by the pivots or pins F F and the gate is constructed.
The gate in opening and shutting is suspended upon the parallelograms or eccentric levers, which turning upon the pivots operate as a pulley by which the gate is slightly raised and made to describe a part of a circle by means of which it is opened or shut.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is Opening and closing the gate by the use of the parallel pivoted levers D and D when arranged in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
