The invention relates to inking mechanisms for printing machines, and more particularly to an inking mechanism adapted for use with a novel type of printing machine in which the type is set one line at a time and an impression made of each line before distributing the type preparatory to the printing of the succeeding line.
In the printing machine in which the inking mechanism of the invention is used, the line of type when set occupies a fixed position and the platen carrying the paper is moved into and out of engagement with the types when making the impression. Between impressions there is a dwell during which the type is distributed and the succeeding line to be printed is set up and justified.
The machine as now constructed is a menually operative machine, and in making the impression, the platen has a short movement, so that the space available between the types and the platen for the inking mechanism is small, and the interval during which the inking must be done is very short and must be accurately timed in relation to the movements of the platen.
Furthermore, in a printing machine of this type, a clean sharp impression is essential and the intermittent actuation of the ductor, distributing and inking rollers makes it desirable to separate these rollers while the inking mechanism is at rest to prevent distortion of the rollers'to an extent which will interfere with the effective cutting and distribution of the ink and its application to the type.
It is also desirable to so construct the inking mechanism that the inking roller will be out of engagement with the vibratory distributor roller during the application of ink to the types, so as to avoid the necessity for synchronizing the rotation of the inking roller with rotation of the vibrator roller during the inking interval.
With the above conditions in mind, I have provided an inking mechanism movable between type to be inked and an impression platen, this inking mechanism being actuated by the same mechanism operative to actuate said impression platen so as to accurately time the movements of the inking mechanism in relation to those of the platen, and thus avoid possibility of interference between said inking mechanism and said platen.
The various rollers of the inking mechanism are so positioned in relation to each other, and s0 actuated during the movement of these rollers into and out of operative relation to the type, as to not only ensure an effective distribution of ink during the travel of the inking rollers toward the printing position, but to bring the ductor roller into engagement with an ink fount roller following each inking operation.
I also provide means adjacent the type, cooperating with means acting upon the inking roller, so that during the movement of the said inking roller toward the type, said roller will be moved out of engagement with the vibratory distributor roller and brought into the plane of the type, so that it may turn freely during the inking of the type, and immediately following such inking, which is a double inking, will be re-engaged with the vibratory distributor roller. By providing an adjustable mechanism for thus moving the inking roller, the amount of pressure of said inking roller against the type may be nicely regulated.
The means for turning the various rollers of the inking mechanism is so constructed as to be operative only during the reciprocatory movement of these rollers in bringing them into and out of the inking position, no other source of power being available for actuating these rollers.
The ink fount with its roller is so positioned as to be engageable by the ductor roller immediately following one inking operation and preceding the next inking operation, means being provided whereby movement is imparted to the ink fount roller immediately following each inking operation.
The construction is such that the inking mechanism is brought into and out of the inking position as the impression platen is being actuated and prior to the making of an impression thereby, and through the same mechanisms, means being provided in the power train whereby prior to the making of the impression, the inking roller will be engaged with the type, and by a continuing movement, returned to its normal, inoperative position with the various rollers well removed from the path of movement of the platen.
In the construction employed, there is a posi-' tive movement of the inking and associated rollers towards the type, and a positive return movement thereof before the making of an impression. To secure this result, I provide a trip or coupling mechanism between the mechanism operative to engage the platen with the type in making an impression and the mechanism for moving the printing roller into and out of the inking position. This trip or coupling mechanism is so constructed as to complete the cycle of the inking mechanism before the impression has been made.
It is essential, to an accurate timing in the operation ofthe inking mechanism in relation to the printing interval, that the co-operating parts of the trip or coupling mechanism be so formed as to impart movement to the inking mechanism in one direction during the early stages of the movement of the platen, and to cause the trip or coupling mechanism to be released with a continued movement of the platen actuating mechanism, and power he applied to the inking mechanism to return it to its normal, inoperative position prior to the making of an impression. Following the making of an impression and during the return movement of the platen, the inking mechanism is in its normal, inoperative position and the trip or coupling mechanism is idle.
The ink fount roller is actuated through the tive movement is imparted to the members of said printing couple, of an ink fount, an ink fount roller therein, a reciprocatory frame having movement between the members of said printing couple, an inking device carried thereby, embodying therein a distributing roller, means transferring ink from said ink fount roller to said distributing roller during each inking operation, fittings movably mounted upon said frame adjacent said distributing roller, an inking roller carried by said fittings, and means operative upon said fittings to alternately engage said inking roller with said distributing roller and the printing member of said couple, and connections between said actuating means and said frame whereby said frame receives one full reciprocation to bring said inking device into and out of engagement with the type prior to the making of each impression; and in such other novel features of construction and combination of parts as are hereinafter set forth and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

The inking mechanism of the inv ntion is f r angers use upon a. novel type of printing machine wherein the printing couple consists of a type member adapted to have a single line of type set up and justified, and a. platen ca ying a sheet of paper or a stencil sheet. An impression is made by relative movement of the types and the platen. Each impression is of a single line of type, and after the impression is made, the type is distributed and a new line of type set up preparatory to the succeeding impression.
In the form of the invention shown, the platen is carried by a pivotal frame, and a short powerful movement is imparted to this frame when making the impression.
The detailed construction of the type member of the printing couple and of the impression or platen member is immaterial to the present invention, which relates to an inking mechanism which moves between the type member and the platen member upon the actuation of the machine for the making of the impression.

In the form of the invention shown,- the type member is composed of a sequence of discs, each having a plurality of peripheral platens I! carrying the type. These discs are rotated in setting up each line of type and in distributing the type so set, preparatory to the setting of the succeeding line.
A further description of the details of a printing machine is unnecessary to an understanding of the present invention, which relates more particularly to a particular construction of inking mechanism made necessary, not only because of the mode of operation of the printing couple, but by the limited available space between the type member l and the platen m'ember II.
This inking mechanism emboditx therein an ink fount [8 having an inking roller l9 and the usual adjustable bottom plate 20 for controlling the amount of ink applied to said ink fount roller.
The inking, ductor and vibratory distributing rollers are carried by a reciprocatory frame consisting of arms 2| upon opposite sides of the machine, connected by a top plate 22 having head fittings 23 toward opposite ends thereof in which the vibratory distributing roller is rotatably mounted, and which forms a support in which the inking and the ductor roller are, as will more fully appear, movably mounted in relation to the distributing roller.
Pivotally mounted upon each head fitting 23 is a fitting having three arms 24, 25 and 2B. Mounted between the arms 26 is an inking roller 21. Acting upon the fitting is a spring 28 having a normal tendency to bias the inking roller in a direction away from the type member i I! and into engagement with a vibratory distributing roller 29 mounted in said fittings 23- The means for imparting vibratory movement to the distributing roller 29 is not shown, since the construction thereof is old and well known and commonly used in various forms of inking mechanisms for printing machines. The fittings 23 are recessed as shown at 30 to form slideways for blocks 3|, having pivotally mounted therebetween a ductor roller 32. Springs 33 bias the blocks 3! in a direction to engage the ductor roller 32 with the distributing roller 23.
Mounted upon the bed plate of the machine is a rack 34 engageable by a long gear 35 carried by the distributing roller, so that with movement of the arms 2| parallel with said rack 34, the distributing roller will be rotated and receive axial movement as a result of such rotation. During this movement, the ductor roller and the inking roller will be engaged with the distributing roller as a result of the action of the springs 33 and 28, so as to transfer ink from the ductor roller to the distributing roller and therefrom to the inking roller and cut the ink during this transfer operation.
Mounted upon a. bearing bracket 36 for the type member I is a cam 31 positioned in the path of movement of the arm 25. This cam is so located that when the inking roller 21 is approaching the line of type to be inked, it will be moved out of engagement with the distributing roller 29 so as to have the desired light rolling contact with the types to be inked.
The cam 31 is adjustable toward and from its support and is provided with a set screw 38 to lock it in its adjusted position. In this manner, the degree of pressure between the inking roller and the types may be regulated.
By moving the inking roller away from the distributing roller while the former is in engagement with the types, necessity for accurate timing of the angular speed of the inking roller with relation to that of the distributing roller, and the speed of travel of the arms 2|, is avoided.
Mounted upon each side of the bed plate of the machine is a cam fitting 39 having a plurality of rises, as shown, this cam being positioned in the line of travel of a roller stud 40 carried by each block 3|, so that following the engagement of the ductor roller with the ink fount roller during the downward movement of the arms 2|, said blocks will be moved to space the ductor roller away from the ink fount roller l9, and also away from the distributing roller 29.
Carried by said cam plate is a pin 4| engageable by the arm 26 of the fitting carrying the inking ro1ler,'so that when said inking roller approaches its lowermost position, said fitting will be rotated to an extent to move the inking roller 21 away from the distributing roller 29. The movement of the blocks 3| and of the fitting carrying the inking roller is against the tension of the springs 33 and 28 respectively, so that upon the initial upward movement of the inking mechanism, the ductor roller and the inking roller will each be automatically engaged with the distributing roller.
For convenience of expression, the arms 2| and cross bar 22 may be designated a reciprocatory frame carrying the inking and associated rollers.
Depending from the under side of the top frame of the machine are brackets 42 in which is mounted a. rock shaft 43 having mounted thereon a. forked arm 44 engaging a shaft 45 extending between the two arms 2| forming a part of the inking mechanism frame. Carried by and movable with the shaft 43 is a bracket 46 having arms 41 provided with adjusting screws 48 engaging with the forked arm 44. By connecting the arm 44 with the shaft 43 by means of said adjusting screws and the bracket carrying same, the inking mechanism frame may be so adjusted as to ensure a proper engagement of the ductor roll 32 and the ink fount roll l9, and also a proper en gagement of the inking roller 21 with the types.
To ensure a proper timing of the inking mechanism in relation to the movements of the impression platen, I provide connections between the actuating mechanism for the impression platen and the shaft 43 of the actuating mechanism for the inking mechanism, which connections include therein a trip or coupling device which will impart turning movement to the shaft 43 in one direction during the early stages of the movement of the platen, and during the later stages of movement of the platen will impart a reverse movement to the shaft. In this manner, the power utilized for making the impression is applied to the inking mechanism to impart, first an upward reciprocation to the frame of this mechanism, and then a return reciprocation thereto, so that the type will be inked and the inking rollers removed from the path of movement of the impression platen prior to the making of the impression.
Each crank frame I2 is provided with arms 49 carried by a rock shaft 50, which shaft constitutes the pivot about which the impression platen has movement by the handle l and the connections between same and the arm l3. Also secured to the shaft 50 is a crank fitting 5| having pivoted thereto a dog 52, the movements of which are limited by a pin and slot connection 53 between the fitting 5| and said dog 52. Said fitting also carries a stop member 54 co-operating with the pin and slot connection in limiting movement of said dog in one direction.
Carried by the shaft 43 is a fitting 55 carrying an adjustable tooth 56 engageable by the dog 52. This fitting 55 also carries a cam extension 51 of a length to be engaged by a cam 58 upon the dog 52. As shown in Fig. 1, the dog 52 is, when the inking mechanism is in its lowermost position, engaged with the tooth 56 and the cam member 51 is out of engaging relation with the cam 58.
The shafts 43, 45 and 50 extend entirely across the machine. There is but one trip or coupling mechanism.
The hand lever I5 is pivoted at 59 and is provided with a counterweighted arm 60. The shaft 43 is provided with a counterweighted arm 6|.
The ink fount roller l9, during the inking of the types, receives a partial rotation as a result of the actuation of the arm 44. This actuation of the ink fount roller is by means of a gear 62 meshing with a small gear 63 carried by said ink fount roller. Mounted upon the shaft of the gear 62 is a rock frame 64 carrying a spring pressed pawl 65 engageable with a ratchet wheel 56 carried by the gear 62. Adjacent one end of the rock frame is a slot 61 engaging a stud 68 carried by an extension 69 upon the arm 44. The teeth of the ratchet wheel 66 are so set that during upward movement of the arm 44, the rock frame 64 is oscillated, the pawl 65 riding over the teeth of the gear 62 during this movement. Upon the downward movement of the arm 44, however, this frame is oscillated in the reverse direction, and during this movement, imparts turning movement to the ink fount roller 9 in the desired direction by reason of the use of enmeshed gears 62 and 63.
The arms 2| are guided so as to have a right line movement by elongated bearings carried by the frame of the machine.
There is one arm 2| and also one arm 44 at each side of the machine. The ink fount roller actuating mechanism is located only on one side of the machine.
The operation of the herein described machine is substantially as follows:
While the parts are in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, the type is set up in the type member 10, and after these types have been justified, the actuating arm i5 is raised, as indicated in dotted lines, thus, through the link l5, rocking the frame i2 and the shaft about its axis so as to advance the platen member ii toward the type member Hi.
With the initial movement of the handle I5 and the initial turning of the shaft 50, the crank 5i and the dog 52 carried thereby, while engaged with the tooth 56, will be moved to the right, thus rocking the shaft 43 and causing the arm 44 to raise the reciprocatory frame carrying the inking and associated rollers. By reason of the short leverage at which the dog 52 acts upon the tooth 56, and the long leverage of the arm 44, there is a rapid upward movement of said frame. Movement of the shaft 43 will also raise the cam extension 51 so as to position the cam surface thereof in the path of movement of the cam 58 upon the dog 52, so that with a continuing movement of the fitting 51, the trip or coupling mechanism will be operative to impart a continuing lifting action to said frame until the engagement of the co-operating cam surfaces upon said dog and upon the extension 51, whereupon the dog will be disengaged from the tooth 5B and said cams will coact to impart a reverse movement to the shaft 43. The pin and slot connection 53 and the stop member 54 acting upon the dog will ensure the coaction of the cam surfaces in the manner described without likelihood of loss of adjustment.
The cam surfaces become operative when the impression platen has had about one-half of its movement toward the type member l0, and since the cam surfaces have abrupt rises, the reverse movement of the shaft resulting in the lowering of the reciprocatory frame carrying the inking and associated rollers will be so rapid that these rollers will be out of the path of movement of the platen member during the final stage in the movement of this member and while making the impression. After the impression is made and when the hand lever I5 is moved in the opposite direction, the dog 52 rides idly over the tooth 56 until it is in a position to drop into engagement with this tooth, preparatory to the next actuation of said handle.
In Fig. 2 of the drawings, the position of parts as shown, is that immediately following the initial engagement of the cam surfaces upon the extension 51 and 58, the dog being disengaged from the tooth 56 and the inking mechanism frame being shown in its uppermost position. Upon the completion of the upward movement of the arm 15 and while the platen is engaged with the type, the parts will be in a position as shown in full lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
If it be desired to vary the quantity of reciprocatory movement of the frame carrying the inking and associated rollers in relation to the movements of the platen member, or to vary the timing of this movement, this may be accomplished by adjusting the screws 48 connecting the shaft 43 with the arm 44, by adjusting the tooth 56 in relation to the dog 52, or by making both such adjustments.
While the reciprocatory frame carrying the inking and associated rollers is in its lowermost position, the lever arms 26 will be engaged with the pins I, thus hoiding the inking roller 21 out of engagement with the vibratory distributing roller 29. The studs 40 at this time will be engaged with a rise of the cam 39, so as to hold the blocks 3! outwardly of the fitting 23, thus holding the ductor roller out of engagement with the said distributing roller.
Hence, while the machine is atrest, either because of its non-use or because of the time required for setting a line of type, the ductor and the inking roller, which are composition rollers, will be disengaged from the distributing roller, which is a metal roller, thus avoiding possibility of the distortion of the surface of the composition rollers in a manner which might interfere with a proper distribution of ink or a proper application of ink to the types.
With the initial upward movement of thereciprocatory frame, the springs 28 act upon the arm 24 to engage the inking roller 21 with the distributing roller 29, and the springs 33 act upon the blocks 3| to engage the ductor roller with the ink fount roller I9 and also with the distributing roller 29. At all times, the gear 35 upon the distributing roller is enmeshed with the teeth of the rack 34, so that with reciprocatory movement of the frame in either direction, this roller 29 is rotated and rotates the ductor roller 32 and the inking roller 21. The rotation of the distributing roller also causes axial movement thereof in the manner heretofore described, so as to cut the ink being applied to the inking roller.
Toward the limit of the upward movement of the reciprocatory frame, the arm 25 engages the cam 31, thus moving the inking roller 21 out of engagement with the distributing roller and into the plane of the type upon the type member ID to be inked. Since the roller 21 is mounted in the arm 24, the roller may turn freely while said roller is engaged with the type, both during its upward and during its downward movement. The length of movement of the roller while engaged with the type is small, varying according to the size of type used, and the form of the cam 31 is such as to hold the roller 21 in engagement with the type during the entire inking operation and to permit the re-engagement of the inking roller with the distributing roller immediately following the inking operation and during the greatest portion of the descent of the reciprocatory frame.
The movement of the reciprocatory frame is a long movement as compared with the movements of the impression platen, and since the impression interval is in itself a very short interval, the
movement of the saidframe must be, and is, very rapid. During the return reciprocation or downward movement of the frame, the rollers 21, 29 and 32 turn while in contact with each other, and toward the completion of this downward movement the ductor roller 32 engages the ink fount roller l9, which is turned during this downward movement in a manner to apply a fresh supply of ink to the ductor roller.
By moving the inking roller away from the distributing roller during the inking of the types, the necessity for accurately synchronizing the peripheral speed of the inking roller with the lineal speed of the frame carrying same'is avoided. The separation of the inking roller and the ductor roller from the distributing roller while the parts are in their normal, inoperative position, is solely for the purpose of preventing a continuing pressure relation between these rollers which might lead to the deformation of the composition rollers. T
While the reciprocatory frame is being raised, the swing frame 64 is turned about the axis of the ratchet wheel 66 carried by the gear 62 which is enmeshed with the gear 63 upon the ink fount roller, the dog 65 riding idly over the 'teeth of this ratchet wheel during this movement. Upon the return movement of the arm 44 and the downward'movement of the reciprocatory frame, said swing frame is moved in the opposite direction, so that the ink fount roller, l9 receives a partial rotation during the downward movement of the reciprocatory frame, thus carrying a fresh supply of ink to a position where it can be picked up by the ductor roller during both the downward and the upward movement of this roller. By adjusting the cam 31, the pressure relation between the inking roller and the types may be regulated.
The arms 2| of the reciprocatory frame have a right line movement, and the engagement of the teeth of the rack 3| with the gear 35 will assist in avoiding any substantial displacement of the upper part of the frame while the inking roller is engaged with the type.
While, in the accompanying drawings, said rack 34 is shown as being slightly inclined, this is not essential to the invention, said rack merely being positioned in a plane corresponding with the plane of movement of the arms 2|.
The various operating mechanisms are positioned at a side of the machine, most of these mechanisms being duplicated on opposite sides of the machine. There is, however, only one operating handle 15 and only one trip or coupling mechanism, which latter is located substantially centrally of the machine below the bed plate.
It is not my intention to herein claim the detailed structural characteristics of the impression platen, or the parts associated therewith, so that the description of these parts has been limited merely to those general features, the actuation of which is co-ordinated with the actuation of the inking mechanism, or which are essential to an understanding of the purposes and mode of operation of the inking mechanism.
It is not my intention to limit the invention to use with such detailed features of construction, nor to the detailed construction of the various constituent parts of the inking mechanism itself and its actuating mechanism, shown in the accompanying drawings, it being obvious that such may be varied without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to have protected by letters Patent, is:-
1. An inking mechanism for printing machine embodying therein the combination with a printing couple adapted to make an impression from asingle line of type, and actuating means whereby relative movement is imparted to the members of said printing couple, of an ink fount, an ink fount roller therein, a reciprocatory frame having movement between the members of said printing couple, an inking device carried thereby, embodying therein a distributing roller, means transferring ink from said ink fount roller to said distributing roller during each inking operation, fittings movably mounted upon said frame adjacent said distributing roller, an inking roller carried by said fittings, and means operative upon said fittings to alternately engage said inking roller with said distributing roller and the printing member of saidcouple, and connections between said actuating means and said frame whereby said frame receives one full reciprocation to bring said inking device into and out of engagement with the type prior to the making of each impression.
2. An inking mechanism for printing machines embodying therein the combination with a printing couple adapted to make an impression from a single line of type, and actuating means whereby relative movement is imparted to the members of said printing couple, of a reciprocatory frame having movement between the members of said printing couple, an inking device carried thereby, a rock shaft operated from said actuating means, a second rock shaft, an arm carried thereby and engaging said frame, a trip or coupling mechanism carried by said first named rock shaft and operative upon said second named rock shaft, and co-operating means carried by said shafts respectively, whereby said trip or coupling mechanism is made inoperative following the reciprocation of said frame in one direction, and immediately imparts a return reciprocatory movement to said frame.

An inking mechanism for printing machines embodying therein the combination with a printing couple adapted to make an impression from a single line of type, and actuating means whereby relative movement is imparted to the members of said printing couple, of a reciprocatory frame having movement between the members of said printing couple, an inking device carried thereby, a rock shaft operated from said actuating means, a second rock shaft, an arm carried thereby and engaging said frame, a crank fitting carried by said first named rock shaft, a dog pivotally mounted thereon, a fitting carried by said other rock shaft, a tooth thereon engageable by said dog, means whereby at a predetermined moment in the movement of said shafts, said dog is disengaged from said tooth, and means whereby substantially simultaneously with the disengagement or said dog from said tooth, a return reciprocation is imparted to said frame.
4. An inking mechanism for printing machines embodying therein the combination with a printing couple adapted to make an impression from a single line of type, and actuating means whereby relative movement is imparted to the members of said printing couple, of a reciprocatory frame having movement between the members of said printing couple, an inking device carried thereby, a rock shaft operated from said actuating means, a second rock shaft, an arm carried thereby and engaging said frame, a crank fitting carried by said first named rock shaft, a dog pivotally mounted thereon, a fitting carried by said other rock shaft, a tooth thereon engageable by said dog, a cam extension carried by one of said rock shafts, and an actuating cam surface upon said dog, whereby with the continued uni-directional rotation of said first named rock shaft, said dog will be disengaged from said tooth, and at a predetermined moment in the movement of said first named rock shaft, a reverse rotation will be imparted to said second named rock shaft to impart a return reciprocation to said frame.

An inking mechanism for printing machines embodying therein the combination with a printing couple adapted to make an impression from a single line of type, and actuating means whereby relative movement is imparted to the members bf said printing couple, of a reciprocatory frame having movement between the members of said printing couple, an inking device carried thereby,

a rock shaft operated from said actuating means, a second rock shaft, an arm carried thereby and engaging said frame, a crank fitting carried by said first named rock shaft, a dog pivotally mounted thereon, a fitting carried by said other rock shaft, a tooth thereon engageable by said dog, means whereby said tooth may be adjusted to ensure accuracy in the timing of the reciprocation of said frame, means whereby at a predetermined moment in the movement of said shafts, said dog is disengaged from said tooth, and means whereby substantially simultaneously with the disengagement of said dog from said tooth, a return reciprocation is imparted to said frame.
6. An inking mechanism for printing machines embodying therein the combination with a printing couple adapted to make an impression from a single line of type, and actuating means whereby relative movement is imparted to the members of said printing couple, of a reciprocatory frame having movement between the members of said printing couple, an inking device carried thereby, a rock shaft operated from said actuating means, a second rock shaft, an arm idly mounted upon said last named rock shaft and engaging said frame, means adjustably securing said arm to said rock shaft comprising a bracket carried by said rock shaft, and adjusting screws carried by said bracket and engaging opposite sides of said arm, whereby said frame may be adjusted in relation to the parts with which it co-operates, a trip or coupling mechanism carried by said first named rock shaft and operative upon said second named rock shaft, and co-operating means carried by said shafts respectively, whereby said trip or coupling mechanism is made inoperative following the reciprocation of said frame in one direction, and immediately imparts a return reciprocatory movement of said frame.
7. An inking mechanism for printing machines embodying therein the combination with a printing couple adapted to make an impression from a single line of type, and actuating means whereby relative movement is imparted to the members of said printing couple, of a reciprocatory frame having movement between the members of said printing couple, an inking device carried thereby, a rock shaft operated from said actuating means, a second rock shaft, an arm carried thereby and engaging said frame, a crank fitting carried by said first named rock shaft, a dog pivotally mounted thereon, means limiting the pivotal movement of said dog, a fitting carried by said other rock shaft, a tooth thereon engageable by said dog, a cam extension carried by one of said rock shafts, and an actuating cam surface upon said dog, whereby with the continued uni-directional rotation of said first named rock shaft, said dog will be disengaged from said tooth, and at a predetermined moment in the movement of said first named rock shaft, a reverse rotation will be imparted to said second named rock shaft to impart a return reciprocation to said frame.
8. An inking mechanism for printing machines embodying therein the combination with a printing couple adapted to make an impression from a single line of type, and actuating means whereby relative movement is imparted to the members of said printing couple, of a reciprocatory frame having movement between the members of said printing couple, an ink fount, an ink fount roller mounted therein, means intermittently actuating said roller, inking, distributing and ductor rollers carried by said frame, a gear carried by said distributing roller, a fixed rack enmeshed with said gear, whereby during the reciprocation of said frame said rollers will be rotated, and connections between said actuating means and said frame whereby said frame receives one full reciprocation to bring said inking device into and out of engagement with the type prior to the making of each impression.
9. An inking mechanism for printing machines embodying therein the combination with a printing couple adapted to make an impression from a single line of type, and actuating means whereby relative movement is imparted to the members of said printing couple, of a reciprocatory frame having movement between the members of said printing couple, an ink fount, an ink fount roller mounted therein, means intermittently actuating said roller, a distributing roller mounted in,said frame, means whereby said distributing roller is rotated with movement of said frame, a fitting pivotally mounted upon said frame, an inking roller mounted therein, means acting to normally engage said inking roller with said distributing roller, a ductor roller carried by said frame in engaging relation with said distributing roller and said ink fount roller, means wherebysaid fitting is actuated to disengage the inking roller from the distributing roller and engage it with the type to be inked, and connections between said actuating means and said frame whereby said frame receives one full reciprocation to bring said inking device into and out of engagement with the type prior to the making of each impression.
10. An inking mechanism for printing machines embodying therein the combination with a printing couple adapted to make an impression from a single line of type, and actuating means whereby relative movement is imparted to the members of said printing couple, of a reciprocatory frame having movement between the members of said printing couple, an ink fount, an ink fount roller mounted therein, means intermittently actuating said roller, a distributing roller mounted in said frame, means whereby said distributing roller is rotated with movement of said frame, a fitting pivotally mounted upon said frame, an inking roller mounted therein, means acting to normally engage said inking roller with said distributing roller, a ductor roller carried by said frame in engaging relation with said distributing roller and said ink fount roller, a cam, means upon said fitting engageable with said cam whereby said fitting is actuated to disengage the inking roller from the distributing roller and engage it with the type to be inked, and connections between said actuating means and said frame whereby said frame receives one full reciprocation to bring said inking device into and out of engagement with the type prior to the making of each impression.
11. An inking mechanism for printing machines embodying therein the combination with a printing couple adapted to make an impression from a single line of type, and actuating means whereby relative movement is imparted to the members of said printing couple, of a reciprocatory frame having movement between the members of said printing couple, an ink fount, an ink fount roller mounted therein, means intermittently actuating said roller, a distributing roller mounted in said frame, means whereby said distributing rolleris rotated with movement of said frame, a fitting pivotally mounted upon said frame, an inking roller mounted therein, means acting upon said fitting to normally engage said inking roller with said distributing roller, means engageable by said fitting to disengage said inking roller from said distributing roller and engage it with the type to be inked, a ductor roller, movable bearings therefor, means acting on said hearings to normally engage said ductor roller with said distributing roller and with said ink fount roller, means adjacent the ink fount roller engageable with said bearings, whereby said ductor roller will be moved out of engaging relation with said distributing roller and with said ink fount roller while said inking mechanism is idle, and connections between said actuating means and said frame whereby said frame receives one full reciprocation to bring said inking device into and out of engagement with the type prior to the making of each impression.

An inking mechanism for printing machines embodying therein the combination with a printing couple adapted to make an impression from a single line of type, and actuating means whereby relative movement is imparted to the members of said printing couple, of a reciprocatory frame having movement between the members of said printing couple, an ink fount, an ink fount roller mounted therein, means intermittently actuating said roller, a distributing roller mounted in said frame, means whereby said distributing roller is rotated with movement of said frame, a fitting pivotally mounted upon said frame, an inking roller mounted therein, means acting upon said fitting to normally engage said inking roller with said distributing roller, a cam. means upon said fitting engageable with said cam, whereby said fitting is actuated to disengage the inking roller from the distributing roller and engage it with the type to be inked, a ductor roller, movable bearings therefor, means acting on said bearings to normally engage said ductor roller with said distributing roller and with said ink fount roller, means adjacent the ink fount roller engageable with said bearings, whereby said ductor roller will be moved out of engaging relation with said distributing roller and with said ink fount roller while said inking mechanism is idle, and connections between said' actuating means and said frame whereby said frame receives one full reciprocation to bring said inking device into and out of engagement with the type prior to the making of each impression.

An inking mechanism for printing machines embodying therein the combination with a printing couple adapted to make an impression from a single line of type, and actuating means whereby relative movement is imparted to the members of said printing couple, of a reciprocatory frame having movement between the members of said printing couple, an ink fount, an ink fount roller mounted therein, means intermittently actuating said roller, a distributing roller mounted in said frame, means whereby said distributing roller is rotated with movement of said Frame 2. fittin nivntallv mmintprl nnnn said tributing roller and with said ink rount roller while said inking mechanism is idle, and connections between said actuating means and said frame whereby said frame receives one full reciprocation to bring said inking device into and out of engagement with the type prior to the making of each impression.

An inking mechanism for printing machines embodying therein the combination with a printing couple adapted to make an impression from a single line of type, and actuating means whereby relative movement is imparted to the members of said printing couple, of a reciprocatory frame having movement between the members of said printing couple, an ink fount, an ink fount roller mounted therein, means intermittently actuating said roller, a distributing roller mounted in said frame, means whereby said distributing roller is rotated with movement oi said frame, a fitting pivotally mounted upon said frame, an inking roller mounted therein, means acting upon said fitting to normally engage said inking roller with said distributing roller, a cam, means upon said fitting engageable with said cam, whereby said fitting is actuated to disengage the inking roller from the distributing roller and engage it with the type to be inked, blocks slidablymounted upon said frame, a ductor roller mounted in said blocks, means acting on said'blocks to normally engage said ductor roller with said distributing roller and with said ink fount roller, means adjacent the ink fount roller engageable with said blocks, whereby said ductor roller will be moved out of engaging relation 'with said distributing roller and with said ink fount roller while said inking mechanism is idle, and connections between said actuating means and said frame whereby said frame receivesone full reciprocation to bring said inking device into and out of engagement with the type prior to the making of each impression.

An inking mechanism for printing machines embodying therein the combination with a printing couple adapted to make an impression from a single line of type, and actuating means whereby relative movement is imparted to the members of said printing couple, of a reciprocatory frame having movement between the members of said printing couple, an ink fount, an ink fount roller mounted therein, means intermittently actuating said roller, a distributing roller mounted in said frame, a gear carried by said distributing roller, a fixed rack enmeshed with said gear whereby during the reciprocation of said frame said distributing rollerwill be rotated, a fitting pivotally mounted upon said frame, an inking roller mounted therein, means acting upon said fitting to normally engage said inking roller with said distributing roller, a cam, means upon said fitting engageable with said cam, whereby said fitting is actuated to disen a e the inkin rnller frnm the flistri'hntino' and out of engagement with the type prior to the making of each impression.
16. An inking mechanism for printing machines embodying therein the: combination with a printing couple adapted to make an impres-.
sion from a single line of type, and actuating means whereby relative movement is imparted to the members of said printing couple, of a reciprocatory frame having movement between the members of said printing couple, an inking device carried thereby, a rock shaft operated from said actuating means, a second rock shaft, an arm carried thereby and engaging said frame, a trip or coupling mechanism carried by said first named rock shaft and operative upon said second named rock shaft, co-operating means carried by said shafts respectively, whereby said trip or coupling mechanism is made inoperative following the reciprocation of said frame in one direction, and immediately imparts a return reciprocatory movement to said frame, an ink fount, an ink fount roller mounted therein in a position to be engaged by said inking device with reciprocation of said frame, a ratchet wheel adjacent said ink fount, gears connecting said ratchet wheel and said ink fount roller, a swing frame mounted adjacent said ratchet wheel, a pawl carried by said swing frame engaging said ratchet wheel, and connections between said swing frame and said arm engaging said reciprocatory frame, whereby said ink fount roller will be actuated with each reciprocation of said frame.
17. An inking mechanism for printing machines embodying therein the combination with a printing couple adapted to make an impression from a single line of type, and actuating means whereby relative movement is imparted to the members of said printing coupie, of an ink fount, an ink fount roller therein, a reciprocatory frame having movement between the members of said printing couple, an inking device carried thereby embodying therein a distributing roller, means transferring ink from said ink fount roller to said distributing roller during each inking operation, means for imparting rotary movement to said distributing roller during reciprocatory movement of said frame, fittings movably mounted upon said frame adjacent said distributing roller, an inking roller carried by said fittings in engageable relation with said distributing roller, and means operative upon said fittings to disengage said inking roller from said distributing roller and engage it with the printing member of said couple, and connections between said actuating means and said frame whereby said frame receives one full reciprocation to bring said inking device into and out of engagement with the type prior to the making of each impression.
