CHARLES J. HIGGINS, OF HALLOVVELL, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINATION-CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 214,297, dated April 15, 1879; application filed February 5, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES J. HIGGINS, of Hallowell, county of Kennebec, State of Maine, have invented an Improvement in Combination-Chairs, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanyin g drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved socalled combination-chair, it being adapted by changes of position to serve as a high chair, as a low chair, as a chariot-chair, as a reclining-chair or roller-chair, and as a reclining rocking-chair or crib.
The base of the chair when in use for these various objects is at times on one end, and at other times on each of its two sides, and the base and main seat part may be used together, or each independently, as hereinafter described.
Figure 1 represents my apparatus arranged for a chariot-chair. Fig. 2 represents the base inverted and the upper part removed, the base being then adapted to be used as a reclining or crib chair, and the upper part thereof as a childs rocker; and Fig. 3 represents the base and removable seat part in position for a high chair.
The upper or main seat part of my improved combination-chair is composed of a seat, a, havin g suitable back and arms, and, as shown in this instance of my invention, I have depended from the seat rocker-supports b, which, when the main seat part is detached from the base, enables the said main seat part to be employed as a childs rocking-chair; but if desired 1 may employ other forms of supportinglegs, and if the said seat part is not to be so used independently then the supports may be dispensed with.
This seat part will have afoot-rest. I have shown such foot-rest at c, and have supported it by means of springs 01, so that it may yield somewhat to the action of the foot. The extent of this motion of the foot-rest may be limited by means of rods or cords placed within the springs.
The seat a is provided with spring-catches e, which, when the seat part is in position, (shown in Figs. 1 or 3,) will engage parts of the base and hold the seat part firmly in position.
The base is shown as composed of standards f g, connected together at or near the middle of their length.
The standard f has at its ends rollers or wheels h, which, when the base is as in Fig. 1, serves as a rolling base for the seat part, or if the seat part is removed serves as a rolling reclining-chair, the child being then seated upon a seat made part of the said base.
In this instance of my invention the said seat and the back for it is shown as composed of cloth 2 extended from cross-bars c j.
The standard 9 has connected with it. rockers k, and when the said rockers are upon the floor the base may be used as a reclining rocking-chair or crib.
The seat for the rocker is herein shown as composed of cloth 3 3, connected with crossbars I m.
To convert this reclining rocker into a crib it is only necessary to drop the cloth of the back from the cross-bar m. It is obvious I may do this by unbuttoning the cloth from the cross-bar m, or by making a hinge-joint in the standard f, as in dotted lines at n, Fig. 2.
The seat part may be provided in any usual way with a table.
Instead of the rollers I may employ feet, it it is not desired to roll the chair.
It is obvious the shape of the standards and their mode of connection may be varied without departing from my invention.
I claim- The convertible high, low, chariot, reclining, and rocking chair, composed of the chair portion a b and the base fg, having rockers k, rollers h, and seats 2 3, the said chair portion and base each complete in itself, and adapted for both separate and combined uses, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES J. HIGGINS.
