4 Claims. (01. 122-218) Our invention relates to improvements in heating apparatus and the same has for its objects generally to provide a boiler forheating buildings or other structures which is simple in construction, easy to operate, and efiicient in performance.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a boiler for economically and efficiently burning liquid fuel.
Further, said invention has for its object to pr0' vide a boiler which is compact in form, and of relatively small dimension compared to its output, and of convenient size for transportation.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide an oil burning boiler in which the fuel {nay be easily and quickly ignited to start combusion.
Further, said invention has for-its object to provide a boiler in which the burner and the means for supporting the samemay be readily introduced into the combustion chamber and fire pot of the boiler without necessitating the dismounting or taking apart of the boiler.
Other objects will in part'be obvious and in part be pointed out hereinafter.

In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a front elevation showing one form of oil burning boiler constructed according to and embodying our said invention,,the front wall of the enclosing jacketbeing removed to expose the boiler proper;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3--3 of Fig. 2.
In said drawings l0 designates the boiler as a whole comprising a jacket ll including a front section 12, a back section 13, side sections 14, and a top section 15, all of which are secured together along their abutting edges by keys 16 to form a complete enclosure. The front section I2 is provided with a large, rectangular opening I! provided with a removable closure panel 18, maintained in position to close said opening by clips or ears Is at the lower edge of said panel engaging with said front section I 2 adjacent the lower edge of said opening, and by spring-actuated detents 29, adapted to engage with the front section adjacent to the upper edges of said opening;
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and 2| denotes a similar but smaller rectangular opening yielding access to the interior of the base of the boiler, and 22denotes a closure fitting into said opening 2 I and secured in position therein by suitable fastening devices, such as spring actuated detent 23.
Within the jacket II is disposed a vertical sectional boiler 24 comprising a hollow cast metal base section 25 having a large front opening 26, and smaller openings 28 in its sides and rear Wall portions. The upper portion of said section 25 is provided with an elliptical opening corresponding in size substantially with the interior opening or outline of the fuel receptacle and combustion chamber supported thereon, as hereinafter described.
2! denotes the fire pot or fuel receptacle and combustion chamber section which is more or less elliptical in external contour and provided with a flattened front portion 21*. The interior space of the said section 21 is substantially elliptical in cross-section and corresponds generally with the opening of the base section 25. The said fire pot and combustion chamber section 21 is provided at its lower outer edge with lugs 28 fitting into recesses 29 in the base section 25, and secured thereto by bolts 30 extending through said lugs 28 and into the topof said base section 25. The inner lower edge of said section 21 is recessed at 31 to form an elliptical overhanging rim 32.
The front of said fire pot section 2'! is provided with an opening 33 having a closure 34 fitting into the same and supported in place by springpressed clips 35 engaging recessed portions 36 at the corners of said closure 34 which, while serving to maintain the said closure 34 in position normally to seal said opening 33 will, nevertheless, permit said closureto yield outwardly should any undue pressure develop in the fire pot 21, and thus relieve said excess pressure.
The closure 34 is also provided with a sight opening 3! covered by a section of glass 38, protected from the heat and flame within the furnace by'a metal shutter 39 disposed to the rear of said glass section 38, and mo'vably supported upon a slide 40 working in a horizontal slot 41 provided in said closure 34. The slide 40 and shutter 39 may be actuated by a finger portion 40 secured to and extending outwardly from slide 40 42 denotes the intermediate boiler section which corresponds in outline with the fire pot or fuel receptacle and combustion chamber section 21, and is communicatively connected therewith by nipples 43, 44. The upper side intermediate section 42 is concaved or dished and provided with series of longitudinal, transversely-interrupted fins 45 extending from the front to the rear portion of the section, and tapering in height from the center portion to the edges of the section. The said fins 45 have their upper edges disposed in the same horizontal plane, and a short distance vertically below the edge or rim of said intermediate section 42. The underside of said intermediate section is depressed at its forward portion to form a recessed dome 46 for the fuel receptacle and combustion chamber 21,
and is also formed with a relatively deep waterbacked rear portion 41. The bottom wall of said intermediate section, within the recessed portion 46 thereof, is provided with shallow corrugations or wave-like portions 48, which extend from the front towards the rear of the section in order to allow for expansion and to increase the surface area thereof exposed to the hot gases and radiant heat of the fuel.
The deep rear portion 41 of said intermediate section is provided with two arc-shaped vertical openings constituting water-backed lines 49 provided with vertical fins 49* which taper towards their lower ends.
5! denotes the relatively deep dome or top section which corresponds in outline with the intermediate section 42, and is communicatively connected therewith by nipples 5H, 52, corresponding in position to the positions of the nipples 43, 44, connecting the intermediate section 42 with the fire pot section El. The underside of said dome section is provided with corrugations 53 extending from the forward to the rear part of the section, and said corrugated surfaces are provided with depending series of longitudinal, transversely interrupted fins 53 which extend in a direction parallel to said corrugations 53, and register in vertical planes with the upwardly extending fins 35 on the upper side of the intermediate section 42. Adjacent to its forward end said dome section 49 is provided with an arcshaped opening 54 constituting a flue, communicating at its upper end with a relatively wide, shallow, horizontal flue 55 extending rearwardly through the water space of said section and having a flaring rear end forming a smoke outlet t5 communicating with the smoke-hood 56. The vertical wall of said opening 54 is provided with fins 5'5, and the upper side or wall portion of said horizontal flue 55 is provided with corrugations 51 extending from the front to the rear part of the section, and provided with parallel series of interrupted fins 53 which register with corresponding interrupted fins 59 provided upon the lower side or wall portion of said horizontal flue 55.
The front of said dome section 50 is provided with a clean-out opening 60 which is formed entirely within said section and water-backed along its edges thereby, and provided with a closure 6i yieldingly maintained in position by spring-pressed latches 62 pivotally secured to the front of the dome section.
33 denotes the flow pipe extending from the top of the dome section 50, and 64 the return pipe connected to the water space of the fire pot section 2'! adjacent to the lower end of said section.
Within the fire pot section 21 is disposed a hearth ring having a short, inwardly-extending flange 66 at its base, and a relatively deep upwardly extending vertical flange 61 at its top whose free end extends into the recess 3| of the fire pot section 21, and has its edge beveled inwardly and downwardly at 68. The hearth ring 65 is secured to the top of the base section 25 by bolts 69 extending through slots 10 in said base section. To form a fluid tight joint between the hearth ring 65 and the base 25, washer H of asbestos or other suitable material is interposed between said parts.
The different forms: of oil burners call for different constructions of hearth. In the accompanying drawings one illustrative construction is shown, in which (2 denotes a metal hearthplate supported at its edge upon the flange 66 of the hearth ring 65. Upon said hearth plate 65 is supported a refractory covering l2 provided with a recessed or depressed central portion 12 and a central opening 13 therein to receive an oil burner indicatedby broken lines at 1'4. The refractory covering is provided inwardly of its periphery with an annular ridge 15, and between said ridge and the outer edge of said refractory covering 12* are disposed a series of segmental tiles 16 forming a wall at the outer edge of said covering 72 Each of said tiles 16 has aconcave recess or groove portion at its base, which with the recesses of the adjacent tiles, form an oil pocket or groove Tl. At the inner edge of said tiles 16 are provided a series of upwardly extending fingers 18. The spaces between said fingers form passages l8 through which air may pass I and mix with the oil vaporized in the pocket or groove 17 to form the combustible heating medium. Any oil which fails to reach the groove 11 will be retained upon the refractory lining 12 by the ridge I5 and there be vaporized and consumed.
Having thus described our said invention what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A boiler of the character described includ ing a base section having a central opening therein and a fire pot section supported on said base section; said fire pot section having a recessed inner lower edge, a hearth ring secured to said base section having an inwardly-extending flange at its base and a vertical wall portion extending into said recessed edge of the fire pot section, and a hearth plate supported upon the inwardly-extending flange of saidhearth ring.
2. A boiler of the character described including a base section having an opening at its top, and a fire pot section supported on said base section, said fire pot section having a central opening at its bottom conforming to the opening in said base section, and a recess along the edge of the opening in said fire pot section, an annular support secured to said fire pot section along the opening therein and having its upper edge extending into said recess, and a hearth plate mounted on said annular support.
3. A boiler of the character described including a base section having an opening at its top, and a fire pot section supported on said base section, said fire pot section having a central opening at its bottom conforming to the opening in said base section, and a recess along the edge of the opening in said fire pot section, an annular support secured to said base section along the opening therein, an annular wall extending upwardly from said annular support and having its upper edge extending into said recess, a hearth plate mounted on said annular support, and a refractory covering on said hearth plate; said hearth plate and said refractory covering having registering openings therein to receive an oil burner.
4. A boiler of the character described including a base section having an opening at its top,
and a fire pot section supported on said base section, said fire pot section having a central opening at its bottom conforming to the opening in said base section, and a recess along the edge of the opening in said fire pot section, an annular support secured to said base section along the opening therein, an annular wall extending upwardly from said annular support and having its upper edge extending into said recess, a hearth plate mounted on said annular support, a refractory covering on said hearth plate; said hearth plate and said refractory covering having registering openings therein to receive an oil burner; said refractory covering having an annular recess adjacent its edge, and a series of segmental refractory tiles disposed upon said refractory covering intermediate the edge thereof and 7 said annular recess, and said tiles each having a portion terminating in upwardly extending fingers.
