Description

UNITED STATES. PATENT OFFICE.
GEBHARD BECK, OF HANAU, GERMANY.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-WICKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 214,085, dated April 8,- 1879; application filed February 17, 1879; patented in Germany, November 12, 1878.
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, GEBHARD BECK, of Hanan, Germany, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp-Wicks, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce an ineombustible permanent lamp-wick.
This invention consists in forming thelampwicks of fine spun glass, longitudinally arranged in parallel threads, and inclosed in a textile fabric, with stitching in longitudinal direction.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 represents a face view, and Fig. 2 a gross-section, of a wick embodying my invenlOIl.
A flat layer of parallel threads of fine-spun glass, of the desired length of the wick, is placed between some textile fabric, B B, by preference cotton goods, and the whole then sewed together by longitudinal -stitching o c, at short distances. For sewing I use, by preference, chain-stitch. A wick is thus formed with a series of channels or tubes, each of them inclosing a number of fine glass threads, A A.
This wick may be used in lamps like ordipart of the wick, give a suflicient supply of oil and a good light.
The glass threads being incombustible, the wick only needs occasionally a little rubbing or brushing tokeep it in the proper condition.
What I claim is- A lamp-wick consisting of one or more layers of parallel threads of fine-spun glass inclosed in a textile material, the whole being sewed together by a series of parallel longitudinal stitches, substantially as set forth.
