5 Claims.
This invention relates to boiler furnaces and particularly to water tube boiler furnaces of either the straight or bent tube type, and it is the principal object of the invention toincrease the volumetric space in the furnace and permit thefirin'g of low setting furnaces'with pulverized fuel.
'"Another object of the invention is to provide a circulating system for a cooling medium to cool and protect the wall of the combustion chamber a'nda-r'ches arranged over a burner or burners leading into the furnace and having interposed therein headers or manifolds which may be readfly assembled or disassembled for the replacement ef'par'ts.
"In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings, there is provided a furnace having' a' combustion chamber arranged with burner openings in the front or rear wall, or both of said wallsjhav'ing adjustable closure means therefor. A pair of headers are supported above the burners by arches extended inward from the front and rear walls of the furnace, the headers being connected by a plurality of water conducting tubes and in circulation with asteam drum, and the drum connected in a separate cooling circulati-ng system with headers or manifolds mounted -e-xter io-rly of the furnace connected to each other'by ase'ries or water conducting tubes extending-below and supporting the arches to maintairisafd arches at a reduced temperature. 7 One of: the arches has a' baffle plate ascending obliquely therefrom and forming an ash receiving pocket therewith.

To prevent the flame from the burners impinging against the opposed Walls of the combustion chamber the width of said chamber from the front to the rear is increased relative to the width of a standard type furnace and to decrease the width of the top of the furnace chamber an arch of refractory material is extended inward into the combustion chamber from the top of the front or rear wall or both of said walls of the furnace, and shownas arches [4, I5 extended inward from the front and rear furnacewalls over the burner openings ID. A water heatingunit of a boiler is supported above the furnace chamber to extendtransversely of the top of the furnace chamber between the arches l4, l5 and consists of a front boiler header l6 extending upward from the arch l4 and a rear boiler header H extending upward from the arch l5 and these headers are connected in communicationwith each other through a bank of water conducting tubes l8 extending transversely above the combustion chamber, and are connected in circulation with a steam and water drum l9 by a series of tubes 20 leading from the top of the header l6 to a point above the bottom of the drum, and a series of tubes 2l co'nnected to the top of the header IT and the bottom of drum l9.
To cool and maintain the arches I 4, [5 at a reduced temperature an independent water circulating system in circulation with the drum I9 is provided, comprising an exterior header or manifold, or a pair of said headers or manifolds, as illustrated in the present instance, mounted to extend parallelly of the front and rear furnace tion to the connection of said tubes with the housing by eccentrically mounting said pipe in the housing by engaging one end of the pipe in an annular flange 26 extended inward from a head 21 releasably secured to and closing the immediate end of the casing or housing 22 by bolts, as at 28, and the opposite end of the pipe 24 engaging in a flange about an opening 29 in a head 30 releasably secured to the opposite end of the housing 22 by bolts 3|. Tubes 32, 33 are engaged at one end in the exterior portion of the flange about the opening 29 of the head 30 of the respective manifolds in communication with the pipe 24, and the opposite ends of said pipes 32, 33 are connected with the steam drum, tube 32 leading to the upper portion of the drum and tube 33 leading from the bottom of the drum.
To facilitate cleaning the manifolds 22, 24, the outer housing 22 is arranged with a series of openings 34 in opposed relation to the tubes 23 and are closed by releasable closures each consisting of a pair of plates 35, 36 having peripheral flanges to engage exterior and interior flanges about the openings, and releasably retained in closing position by a bolt extended through plate 35 and threaded into plate 35, as shown at 3! in Figures 6 and 7.
To direct the heat and products of combustion from the combustion chamber of the furnace to a superheater 38 of usual structure and mounted in a recessed portion 39 superposed to the boiler tubes l8 adjacent the header IS, a baflle plate 40 is extended in an upward oblique direction from the arch l5 into the portion 39, the lower section of the plate being curved and in contact with the water conducting tubes 23 and in conjunction with the lower portion 4| of the boiler header l1 forming an ash receiving and collecting pocket 42 having a blower opening 43 and a cleanout opening havinga closure door 44. Battle plate 40 cooperates with an angular baffle plate 45 spaced therefrom and extended in a downward direction from the rear wall of the portion 39 toward the header IT with the free marginal portion extending parallel to said header to direct the products of combustion over the ash collecting pocket to an outlet connected with a stack 46, as indicated by the arrows in Figure 1, the stack leading from the top of the furnace between the portion 39 and the drum 19. The bafile plate 45 serves to separate ash from the products of combustion carried in suspension therein which are collected in the pocket 42.
When the burners H are arranged in the opposite front and rear walls of the furnace, as shown in Figure 1, and it is desired to operate only one burner, or partially operate either or both burners, there is provided an adjustable closure for each burner opening III to shut off the burner from the combustion chamber 9, comprising a gate 41 of approximately the same size and shape as an opening [0 and having the inner surface recessed with blocks 48 of suitable high temperature resisting material removably retained in the gate recess by bolts 49, as shown in Figure 3, which material is exposed to the combustion chamber when the gate is in position to close a burner opening to protect the gate from the heat of combustion. The gate is mounted in a rectangular space 50 in the furnace wall to have vertical reciprocatory sliding movement toward and away from the burner opening H] by a rectangular frame 5| integral with the gate slidably engaging channels or slideways 52 mounted in the space 50 by bolts 53 engaged in the furnace wall at the outer side of said space 50 and in bosses 54 extended laterally from the slideways, as clearly shown in Figures 2 and 4. The gate 41 is actuated from the exterior of the furnace and maintained in adjusted positions by a rack arranged on the frame 5| by arranging a portion 55 extending from the ends and intermediate the sides of the frame with teeth 56 which mesh with a pinion 57 fixed on a shaft 58 rotatable in a boss 59 of a plate 69 mounted on the exterior of the outer wall of the space 53 by bolts 53, as shown in Figures 2 to 4, inclusive. The pinion and rack are actuated by a hand wheel 5| fixed to one end of the shaft extended beyond the boss 59.
Having thus described our invention, we claim:
1. In a water tube boiler furnace, front, rear and side walls, burner openings in the front and rear walls, arches extending inwardly from the top of the front and rear walls over the burner openings, a boiler including a bank of water tubes extending between the arches and a water and steam drum connected to the bank of water tubes for the circulation of water therethrough, a manifold mounted exteriorly of each of said arched walls and each connected in communication with the water and steam drum exteriorly of the walls of the furnace, and a row of water conducting tubes connected at the opposite ends with the manifolds and thereby in circulation with the water and steam drum, and said row of tubes supporting the wall arches and effecting a cooling of the arches by the flow of water through the row of tubes.
2. In a boiler furnace, front, rear and side walls, burner openings in the front and rear walls, arches extending inwardly from the front and rear walls over the burner openings, a boiler having a bank of water tubes between the arches and a water and steam drum connected to the bank of water tubes, a row of water conducting tubes extended to support the arches, and means for connecting said row of water tubes with the water and steam drum for circulation of the boiler water through the row of tubes independently of the bank of water tubes and thereby cool the arches.
3. In a water tube boiler furnace, front, rear and side walls with burner openings in the front and rear walls and arches of refractory material extended inward from the top of the front and rear walls above the burner openings, a boiler above the furnace chamber including a water and steam drum, a bank of water tubes extending transversely above the furnace chamber and a pair of headers extended upward from the inner ends of the arches connecting the bank of tubes in circulation with the water and steam drum, one of said headers being connected with the bottom of the drum and the other with the upper portion of the drum, and water tubes extending transversely and spaced longitudinally of the furnace below and supporting the arches connected in circulation with the water and steam drum independent of the bank of water tubes and headers of the boiler.
4. In a water tube boiler furnace, front, rear and side walls with burner mounting openings in the front and rear walls and arches of refractory material extended inward from the top of the front and rear walls, a boiler including a water and steam drum, a bank of water tubes extending transversely above the furnace chamber and a pair of headers extended upward from the inner ends of the arches connecting the bank of tubes in circulation with the water and steam drum. water tubes extending transversely and spaced longitudinally of the furnace chamber below and supporting the arches, and means connecting said tubes in circulation with the water and. steam drum independent of the bank of boiler tubes and headers comprising a pair of manifolds extending longitudinally and exterior of the furnace connected to the ends of said tubes, a tube connected with one of said manifolds having a down-take connection with the water and steam drum and another tube connected with the other manifold and having an up-take connection with the water and steam drum.
5. A boiler furnace as claimed in claim 2, wherein the means to connect the row of water conducting tubes with the boiler comprises a pair of manifolds one arranged exterior of the front wall and the other exterior of the rear wall of the furnace, and each manifold comprising a casing connected to one end of the tubes and a casing mounted eccentrically within and having openings to the first casing in line with the connection of the tubes with the first casing, one of said inner casings having a down-take connection with the boiler and the other an up-take connection with the boiler.
