This invention relates to improvements in smoker's articles and has particular reference to a combined smoking pipe cleaner and ash receptacle.

The primary object of the invention resides in an article of the above' kind by which the bowl of a smoking pipe may be thoroughly cleaned after each use, and in which the ashes and unburned tobacco is deposited in a receptacle which prevents accidental spilling during the emptying or cleaning operation.

Another object of the invention is to provide a smoker's article which embodies a cup-like receptacle having a resilient tongue or blade which is curved to fit the bowl of a pipe and is adjustable according to the thickness of the pipe bowl, the blade extending upwardly adjacent the side wall to a point slightly above the plane of the top of the receptacle, and hearing against the wall of the bowl of a, pipe when inverted and placed thereon so that rotation of the pipe will cause the tongue to loosen up the ashes and unburnt tobacco and scrape loose any tobacco bits or "cake" which may tend to adhere to the side or bottom walls of the bowl.

Another object of the invention is to provide a smoker's article which resembles an ash receptacle in appearance and which may be used for such but which also contains a novel pipe cleaning device.

A further object is the provision of a smoker's article of the above kind which is simple in construction, inexpensive of manufacture, easyto operate when cleaning a pipe, and which does not detract from the furnishings of a room.

With these and other objects, the invention resides in a certain novel construction and combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features of which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:--

Referring to the drawing by reference characters, the numeral lil designates my improved smoker's article in its entirety which includes a cup-shaped ash receptacle I l so as to be comparatively deep and which has a dome-shaped bottom or base l2.

Secured within the receptacle ll, by

means presently described, and with its upper extremity extending slightly above the top of the receptacle is an upstan-ding resilient scraping blade, or tongue, l3, having a serrated or sawtoothed edge !4, a straight knife edge l5 and a 5 right angularly disposed bifurcated base portion !6, all for a purpose presently apparent. Preferably the blade !3 is curved transversely and at its upper extremity is also slightly curved longitud'nally, as at ll, to conform with the shape of the side and bottom of the bowl of a pipe.

The blade l3 is secured to the bottom |2 of the receptacle II by means of a clamping plate IB, overlying said bifurcated portion !6 of said blade, and a clamping screw |9 passing upwardly through the center of the bottom of said receptacle between the bifurcations of said portion l6 and through said plate IB. Exteriorly of the receptacle l I the screw !9 is provided with a knurled head ZI located in the space provided by the dome 20 shape of the bottom l2.

Threaded through the side wall of the receptacle ll is a blade adjusting screw 22 having a knurled head 23 at one end and its other end threaded into the blade l3 slightly above the 25 bifurcated portion le of the latter.

Secured to the side wall of the receptacle ll is a cushion of felt or the like 24. The cushion may be removably secured in position by the use of any suitable fastening elements, such as glove fasteners 25 passing through apertures 26 in the receptacle ll.

In practice, assume that it is desired to remove the ashes and unburned tobacco from the bowl of the pipe P. The bowl of the pipe is inverted or turned down over the receptacle l I and the same brought down onto the blade with the wall of the pipe bowl interposed between the blade 13 and the cushion 24. The pipe may now be turned in a direction to cause the scraping edge l5 to engage the walls of the bowl which loosens the charge, causing the same to drop into the receptacle. The curved end ll conforms to the curved bottom of the bowl and thoroughly scrapes loose any particles which tend to lodge thereto, and which cannot be removed by any means other than scraping.

In time the bowl of a smoking pipe becomes filled with a cake" or carbon which adheres to the side Walls and which cannot be removed by the scraping edge !5. In such instance the pipe is applied to the blade |3 in the manner already described, but the same is turned in a direction opposite to that described to cause the toothed edge l4 to loosen up the "cake" and scrape the side walls of the bowl free of the same. If desired the pipe may be supported by the blade when not in use as shown in Figure 2 of the drawing. It might also be mentioned that the cushion 24 prevents the walls of the receptacle from scratching the pipe bowl during a cleaning operation and further acts to shine or po-lish the exterior of the bowl Without any extra eort.

Obviously by loosening the screw !9 and manipulating the screw 22, the blade l3 may be adjusted radially of the receptacle I l for pipe bowls of dierent thicknesses. By means of the screw 22 the blade |3 may be flexed, in its clamped position, to slant said blade, if desired, for certain shapes of pipe bowls and to cause the extremity IT to bite deeper into the bottom of the bowl.

To enable the user to firmly grip the ash receptacle ll, I provide the base end of the same with outwardly bulged side walls 21 about which the fingers may be Conveniently placed. g While I have described which I deem to be the most desirable embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that many of the details may be varied without in any way departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore do not limit myself to the exact details of Construction herein set forth nor to anything less than the whole of my invention limited only by the appended claims.

What is claimed as new is:

1. A pipe cleaning device comprising a receptacle adapted to rest stable on its bottom, an upstanding blade within said receptacle and substantially parallel with the inner wall of the same and adjustably secured to the bottom thereof so that it may be moved radially relative to the receptacle, a screw extending horizontally thru the side wall of the receptacle from a point exterior thereto and manually rotatable and rotatably engaged with said blade and adapted to adjust the latter radially of the receptacle and to cant the blade when the latter is clamped, and means extending thru the bottom of the receptacle for clamping the blade in adjusted position.

2. In a smokefs article of the class described, a receptacle, an upstanding resilient scraping blade therein having normally a Vertical position and bodily adjustable toward or from the site of the receptacle, and manually manipulative means for adjusting said blade and operative also to slant said blade from vertical position.
