PRINTING TYPE Filed Nov. 30, 1954 Fleha. 1=|e..4;

Patented Mar. 24, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application November 30, 1934, Serial No. 755,262 In Great Britain October 6, 1933 3 Claims.
This invention relates to printing type. It is already known to use a keyboard operated typesetting machine for the purpose of setting dwarf type in the grooved segments used in printing 5 machines of the office appliance variety. The feed mechanism in such type-setting machines requires all the type to have the same width dimension of body, and hitherto dwarf types having this characteristic have been used.
Such methods are accompanied by the disadvantage that if the bodies of all the types are of the same width, then the spacing of the characters will be uneven owing to the fact that some characters are much wider than others, as, for
example, m is to i.
The object of the present invention is to overcome-this difiiculty, and according to the present invention the type for the narrower characters have the character formed off the centre of the printing surface, and one side of the body of the type is made readily detachable, whereby the type, originally all of a body width to suit the feed mechanism of type-setting apparatus, can, after setting, have superfluous parts at the sides removed, whereby perfect spacing of the characters can be obtained.
After the detachable pieces of some of the type bodies have been removed, the space can, if required, be made good by using spacing type which are of an expansible nature, between the words.
Referring to the drawing:--
Figure 1 is a perspective view upon an enlarged scale showing one method of carrying the invention into effect.
Figure 2 is a sectional view in side elevation.
Figure 3 is a perspective view showing the detachable part of the type body removed.
Figure 4 is an end view corresponding with Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a view showing three type in the set position before severing the detachable part of the centre type.
In carrying my invention into effect as illustrated in the drawing, on the type having narrow characters, the character 2 is formed on a pri mary body portion I, and the shank 1 is formed in line with this primary body portion. At the side, the primary body portion is provided with a readily detachable or secondary portion 3 which is partially, but not wholly, severed from the body, so that the type will suit the feed mechanism of the type-setting machine, but after being set, can, where necessary or desirable, have its efiective width removed by a suitable tool.
Such type may be cast with the detachable or secondary portion 3 partially severed from the primary or main portion of the body by a deep groove 4 of V section, one side 5 of the groove being vertical, and the other side inclined, the 5 vertical side being adjacent to the main part of the body, and the inclined side 6 of the groove being on the detachable portion, so that when the detachable portion is removed, the body of the type is left with parallel sides. In the con- 10 struction illustrated, the V section groove extends from one edge of the body part almost, but not quite, to the opposite edge, and adjacent the centre the V groove is deepened by a recess as indicated at 8. If required the groove may be 15 carried completely across the width of the type.
The type constructed in accordance with the present invention can be set by any of the known setting machines, and will appear as in Figure 5 when set. The detachable portions are re- 20 moved after setting, and if required the spaces may be made up by inserting spacing type between the words.
Expansible spacing type may be used, constructed with a body formed with two portions 25 which are normally closed together or nearly closed, but which can be opened out to increase the effective width of the body as desired, the two portions being divided by a deep transverse slot.
What I claim then is:
1. A printing type having a body of orthodox width and suitable for use in a key-operated type-setting machine, a printing character on the surface of the body but offset from the centre thereof, and a shank projecting from the underside of the body, said body having a recess disposed at the side of the printing character to allow of a portion of the body to be detached.
2. A printing type having a body, a shank, a narrow printing character on the end of the body, and a detachable portion on the body, characterized in that the detachable portion projects from that face of the body which is adjacent the side of the printing character. 45
3. A printing type having a body, a shank, a narrow printing character on the end of the body, and a detachable portion on the body disposed at the side of the printing character, said body having a deep recess in its end face, and disposed 50 between that part of the body which bears the printing character and the detachable part, said recess having an indentation in its base.
