Description

March 17, 1936.
l. NEWMAN ETHER CAN Filed May 17, 1954 II III llll INVENTOR Is idor Newm an BY ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 17, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
My invention relates to cans for containing highly volatile liquids, and it particularly relates to ether cans.
The invention has for an object to provide a can whose neck or spout is closed by a soft metal closure that can be readily cut out or pierced for access to the contents of the can, which closure is so constructed in cooperation with the rim of the neck or spout of the can as to effect an absolutely airtight joint or hermetic seal.
Again it is an object to provide a can having a neck or spout of relatively hard metal and closure therefor of a softer metal and which is provided with a thickened. or beaded rim; further it is an object to provide a structure in which the flange of the spout is rolled over the bead of the closure of the two are flattened so that there is a tight engagement between the entire surface of the bead and the adjacent surface of the neck metal, thereby providing a strong and effective hermetic closure which will not tend to loosen or leak, etc., in the event that pressure is app-lied to the dome of the closure member, either by an accidental blow or otherwise.
Other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out hereinafter.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends, the invention still further resides in the novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all of which will be first fully described in the following detailed description and then be particularly pointed out in the appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an ether can with my invention applied.
Figure 2 is a detail side elevation with parts being broken away, showing the position of the parts before rolling over the edge of the neck or spout of the can.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2, showing the joint completed between the closure and the can.
Figure 4 is a detail view, partly in elevation and partly in section, of the closure member.
Figure 5 is a plan, looking in the direction of the arrows 55 in Figure 3.
In the drawing, in which like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures, l designates the can having a neck of the usual construction. The upper portion of the neck is outwardly flared as at 3, and upwardly and in- 5 wardly curved as at 4, terminating in the edge 5.
The closure member 9 consists of a soft metal body of relatively thin cross section and having a thickened annulus or bead l forming a shoulder 8 between the bead and the dome portion 9. 10
In assembling the closure to the can it is set into the trough formed by the parts 3 and 4, shown in Figure 2, and the metal is rolled over the bead I, and at the same time is compressed so as to flatten the bead and provide a fiat top surface 6 to the trough 3-4-6 (see Figure 3), the flattening of the bead serving to squeeze the metal into all portions of the trough 3-4-6 and completely seal it. The edge 5 at the same time is rolled inwardly of the closure as at 8. It will be seen by reference to Figure 3 that if pressure is applied to the closure part 9 downwardly the tendency will be to spread the annulus or bead I and thereby exert a tightening pressure between the bead and the troughlike member 3-4-6 in which the bead is located.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought that the complete construction and advantages of the invention will be apparent.
What I claim is:
In a can, a neck having an outwardly and upwardly flared portion forming a trough, a soft metal closure member having an arched body wall surrounded by a pre-formed bead at its periphery, the diameter of the bead exceeding the thickness of the wall of the closure member in virtue of which an annular shoulder is provided on top of the closure member at the juncture of the bead with the body wall, said flared 40 portion being inwardly bent over the bead in tight sealing contact therewith, the edge of the inwardly extended part of the flared portion being extended downwardly in tight sealing contact with said shoulder and with the body wall of the sealing member substantially as described.
