Description

March 17, .1936. W. c. HIRING HANDBAG Filed Feb. 6. 1934 ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 17, 1936' HANDBAG William C. Hiering, Millburn Township, Essex County, N. J., assignor to J. E. Mergott Company, Newark, N. J., a. corporation of Delaware Application February 6, 1934, Serial No 709,937'
3 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in hand bags, and more particularly to frames used in such bags.
It is an object of this invention to provide a hand bag frame of simple structure, having means to greatly facilitate the attaching of bag covering material thereto.
A further object is the provision of a hand bag frame of the channelled type having a plurality of bendable tabs adapted to be crimped against bag covering material toy enable said covering material to be readily and securely held to the frame member without requiring sewing, or necessitating marring of the visible surface of the frame member during the crimping operation.
These and other advantageous objects which will later appear, are accomplished by the simple and practical construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and exhibited in the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing a hand bag frame embodying my invention,
Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional views of details of means for attaching bag covering material to the hand bag frame, and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing a hand bag frame embodying a modiiied form of the invention.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown a pair of hingedly connected bag frame members 3 and 4 of similar shape. Each frame member is of the U- shaped channelled type, the channel opening outwardly and laterally relative to the frame and hand bag. The frame member comprises an inner side wall 5 having an upper outwardly directed' iiange 6, which extends almost the entire length of the cross member 'I. The hinge members 8 of the frame members are not provided with outwardly directed flanges similar to flange 6.
'Ihe inner side wall 5 also' has a lower outwardly directed ange 9 which extends throughout the length of the cross member I and the hinge members 8. The flange 9 has a plurality of spaced tabs I 0 which are bendable parallel to the side wall 5.
The bag covering material I I has crimped to one edge thereof an inlay I2 which is adapted to be positioned in the channel of the frame along the cross member I and held in position by the tab I Il, the inlay I2 extending substantially the entire length of the cross member l.
The side edges of the bag covering material have attached thereto relatively narrow inlays I 3 which are positioned on the inner side wall 5 of the hinge (C1. 15G-Z9) members 8 of the frame. The inlays I3` are of such a width and arranged so. that they can be embraced by the tabs I0 on the hinge members, said tabs I0 being provided with prongs Ill that bite into the bag covering material directly when 5 the tabs Ill are bent to clamp the bag covering material to the side wall 5.
From the above description it will be seen that I have provided a frame of very simple structure which can be readily formed by bending operal0 tions. Obviously the attaching of bag covering material to the frame can be conveniently accomplished simply by inserting the inlays I2 and I3 properly into position and bending the tabs II)v to clamp the bag covering material. securely to the l5 frame. Very little time is required for this operation, and the bending of the tabs I does not necessitate marring of the visible parts of the frame member as heretofore has been the case in many bag frames where it has been found ex- 20 pedient to clamp bag covering material to the frame.
Referring to Fig. 4, in which is shown a modied form of the invention, there is shown a pair of hingedly connected bag frame members I 5 and 25 I6, each being of the U-shaped type with the cross member I I being in the form o-f an outwardly and laterally opening channel having an inner side wall I8, which is provided with an upper out,- wardly directed right angled flange I9, and a 30 lower outwardly directed Iiange 20, the latter having a plurality of spaced bendable tabs 2 I.
The hinge members 22 of the frame member comprise an inner side wall which is an extension of the side wall I8, said side wall having an 35 extension of the flange 20, and integral with the flange Zll along the hinge members is a taby 23 extending throughout the length of the hinge member and adapted to be bent parallel with said side wall I8 to present substantially an outer side 4o wall.
The bag covering material 2G which is to be attached to the frame member is provided along one edge thereof with an inlay 25 which comprises a metal channel member crimped to said edge of 45 the bag covering material. In attaching the covering material to the frame the inlay 25 is inserted against the side wall I8 along the cross member I'I, and the tabs 2I are bent to clamp the inlay securely to the frame member. The 5o side edges of the bag covering material are not provided with inlays, and said side edges are directly inserted along the hinge sections 22 between the inner side wall I8 and the tab 23,`the latter being crimped tightly against said covering material to hold it securely to the frame member.
From the above description it will be seen that the bag frame is of simple structure and that bag covering material can be attached thereto with a few bending operations of the tabs 2| and 23. The structure described not only facilitates the attaching of bag covering material, but also enables the production of a bag of neat appearance wherein all means for attaching the covering material to the bag are concealed.
The foregoing disclosure is to be regarded as descriptive and illustrative only, and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of which obviously an embodiment may be constructed including many modifications, without departing from the general scope herein indicated and denoted in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a hand bag, a U-shaped frame having an inner side wall provided with an outwardly right angled lower flange, a plurality of spaced bendable tabs integral with said lower flange, said inner side wall along the cross member of the frame having an outwardly directed upper flange, bag covering material attached to said frame member, said bag covering material having an inlay along one edge thereof positioned along the cross member of the frame, said tabs of the cross member being bent to clamp said inlay in position, and inlays along the side edges of the bag covering material, said last mentioned inlays being positioned along the hinge members of the frame, said tabs on the hinge members of greater width than the last-mentioned inlays and directly engaging the bag covering material to securely hold it to the frame.
2. In a hand bag, a U-shaped frame having a cross member and a pair of hinge members, said frame having an inner side wall provided with an outwardly right angled lower ange, a plurality of spaced bendable tabs integral with said lower flange, a sheet of bag covering material having an inlay along one edge thereof positioned along the cross member of the frame, said tabs of the cross member being bent to clamp said inlay in position, and inlays attached to the side edges of the bag covering material, said last mentioned inlays being positioned along the hinge members, said tabs on the hinge members directly engaging the bag covering material to securely hold it to the frame.
3. In a hand bag, a U-shaped frame having a cross-member and a pair of hinge members, said frame having an inner side wall provided with an outwardly right angled lower flange, a plurality of spaced bendable tabs integral with said lower flange, a sheet of bag covering material having an inlay along one edge thereof positioned along the cross member of the frame, said tabs of the cross member being bent to clamp said inlay in position, and inlays attached to the side edges of the bag covering material, said last mentioned inlays being positioned along the hinge members, said tabs on the hinge members having prongs directly piercing the bag covering material to securely hold it to the frame.
