Said 55 This invention relates to a sprayer such as is used to spray insecticides and other liquids, and particularly to a novel structure of nozzle for such a sprayer.
In the sprayer of the type used the liquid is sprayed by means of compressed air and it is desirable to have the liquid and air thoroughly mixed to finely divide the liquid and so that the same can be sprayed from a discharge passage Referring to the drawing, a sprayer is shown comprising a liquid container I0. While this container may take various shapes, in the embodiment of the invention illustrated it is shown as of cylindrical shape. Said container It] has secured thereto and set somewhat thereintoa cylindrical member I I, the same forming a pump cylinder and having reciprocable therein a cup plunger 52 of leather or similar flexible material cap also has a plurality of passages 2 I extending outwardly from passage Zla, the same being arranged tangentially as shown in Fig. 4. The passages 2| 0 communicate at their outer ends with the passages [9b with which they are in longitudinal alinement. When the cap 2| is removed the tube 20 can be Withdrawn through member 19 and removed as indicated in Fig. 5.
In operation, the liquid to be sprayed is placed in container ID. The handle I is reciprocated and air is pumped in cylinder II and forced through the opening He in partition llb. Valve I! prevents the passage of air back through opening lie so that compressed air is contained in cylinder II beyond partition Nb and on top of the liquid in container l0. Liquid is forced upward through tube 20 and passes from the end of said tube into chamber Zia. Compressed air at the same time is forced through passage l9a around said tube and this air passes through slots [9b around the edge of flange 20a into the passages 2! c and enters chamber Zla. The tangential jets of air passing into chamber Zla cause a whirling motion in said chamber and the air and liquid passes out through discharge passage 2|b in the shape of a cone, the liquid being finely divided. The liquid and air are thoroughly mixed in chamber 2 la and the liquid divided into fine particles. Some air also enters tube 20 through openings 20b and this also assists in the disintegration and discharge of said liquid. The action of the nozzle has been found to be a great improvement upon prior structures used. As already stated tube 20 can be readily removed when cap 21 is removed,
From the above description it is seen that ap plicant has provided a very simple and efficient form of sprayer nozzle. The parts of the nozzle are quite few in number and the same are easily made and assembled. The device has been amply demonstrated in actual practice and found to be very successful and eflicient.
It will, of course, be understood that various changes may be made in the form, details, arrangement and proportions of the parts, without departing from the scope of applicants invention, which generally stated, consists in a device capable of carrying out the objects above set forth in the parts and combinations of parts disclosed and defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:--
1. A sprayer structure having in combination,
a nozzle member having a longitudinal passage therethrough, a liquid supplying tube extending through said passage and forming an annular passage about said tube, a second member secured to said nozzle member having a substantially cylindrical chamber therein at the end of said tube, said tube having an opening at its end for discharging into said chamber said member having a discharge aperture of much smaller diameter than said opening leading from said chamber, a plurality of passages in said structure leading to said chamber and tangentially arranged relatively thereto, means connecting said last mentioned passages and said annular passage, means for supplying liquid under pressure to said tube and air under pressure to said annular passage whereby said air and liquid are delivered to said chamber and given a whirling motion therein.
2. A sprayer structure having in combination, a nozzle member having a longitudinal passage therethrough, a tube for receiving liquid under pressure extending through said passage and forming an annular chamber about said tube, said tube having a flange engaging the end of said nozzle member, a cap threaded on said nozzle member and engaging said flange having a small discharge aperture and having a substantially cylindrical chamber therein outwardly of said flange communicating with said tube, said tube having an open end discharging centrally into said chamber, a plurality of passages leading outwardly from said chamber and tangentially arranged relatively thereto, means connecting said last mentioned passages and said annular passage, and an opening in said tube communicating with said annular passage.
3. A sprayer nozzle having in combination, a member having a substantially cylindrical chamber therein with a discharge passage of very much smaller diameter than said chamber leading from said chamber, a tube having an open end for delivering liquid under pressure centrally to said chamber, means for delivering air under pressure tangentially to said chamber beyond said tube whereby said liquid and air are mixed and give a whirling motion in said chamber and projected through said passage and means for delivering air to said tube a short distance from said chamber to preliminarily break up said liquid.
