This object is attained substantially by The 11001 boards are mounted upon the top forming each side sill of a continuous metal flanges of the underframe longitudinal and beam, the portion thereof beneath the doorway transverse members I, 3, 4, 5 and which being f z section with the top flange extend flanges are disposed in the same horizontal plane mg outwardly into the doorway this portion of for this purpose. The doorway extensions of the flooring are thus adequately supported by the side sill itself which is especially shaped for this purpose and additional members for supporting the floor extensions and for reinforcing the side sill are unnecessary. Obviously, the shaping of the portions of the side sill on each side of the doorway may be varied as desired and also the sill may be separately formed of one or more parts disposed lengthwise which may be secured together the underframe and fioormg adJ-acent door to form essentially a continuous side sill member in which the various parts are disposed to attain The figures illustrate a box car integral cast the maximum strength to f lfill the difier nt under frame including side Sills generally indifunctions thereof at difierent points with the cated at i, center sill 2, bolsters 3, end sills 5, and use f a minimum t of t l, Th transoms 5 and It will be understood that strength of the sill may be increased, as will be the general construction of the underframe as readily understood, by widening of the flanges shcwn is not essential and the various structural and/Or deepening of the upright web.
