Description

Feb., 25, i936. l c. LBARANOWSKI v 2,933,755'
COMBINED SALT PEPPER SHAKER Filed April 4, 1935 Y @f 5V NIMH l f. 'Htlllllll Patented Feb. 25, 1936 UNITED lSTATI-:s
PATENT OFFICE" Claims.
The invention relates to a single shaker adapted to contain both salt and pepper and to be shaken in two positions, so as to dispense salt through one end and pepper through the other end.
5 It is particularly aimed to provide a novel construction wherein the dispensing portion for the pepper or other material is normally closed by spring and weight means, and which will automatically open through shaking to permit dispensing. l
The more specic objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawing illustrating an operative embodiment.
In said drawing:-
Figure 1 is a view through the improved shaker, being partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section;
Figure 2 is a view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an inverted plan View;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view, detailing a portion of the dispensing valve mechanism for the. pepper compartment;
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5 5 of Figure 2; and
Figure 6 is a cross sectional View taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 3.
Referring specically to the drawing, I0 designates a shaker body having a transverse partition II, so that it may hold salt in a compartment I2, and pepper in a compartment I3. In-
stead of said compartments holding salt and pepper, it is obvious that they may hold other condiments or materials. Compartment I2 has a conventional removable closure. I 4, suitably perforated so that salt may be sifted therethrough when the device is shaken with a closure I4 lowermost.
Compartment I3, which contains pepper, for instance, is equipped with a closure plate I5 having an annular flange I6 detachably screwthreaded as at I'I to the Wall of the shaker IU. The pepper is adapted to be shaken or dispensed through an opening I8 provided centrally or otherwise through the plate I5. Said opening I8 is normally closed by an arm I9 of a generally U-shaped valve member, completed by an arm 2I substantially parallel to the arm I9 and longer than the same and having a weight 22 at its free end. Such valve 2| is journaled in the end walls 23 of a housing 24, having an attaching ilange 25 screwed or otherwise secured at 26 to the. plate I5. A coil spring 2l surrounds the valve 20 within the housing 24 and such spring is fastened at one end as at 28 to the valve, and at its other end 29 it engages in one of a series of notches 30 formed in a wall portion 3I of the housing, adjacent an opening 32 in such housing, through which the spring end 29 is passed to engage the notches. Since notches 30 are at diierent locations, the end 29 may be disposed in any preferred notch, so that the tension of the spring may be governed or regulated.
As a result of the construction described, when the device is in the position of Figures l and 2, and shaken, the Weight 22 assists the valve 20 to rock and move the arm I 9 away from the opening I 8, so as to expose such opening and permit pepper to be dispensed therethrough. Shaking of the device, thus successively opens the port or opening I8 incidental to the shaking, and the spring 2l between each opening movement, serving to return the valve to closed position.
Various changes may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
What is claimed is:-
l. A shaker of the class described having a dispensing opening, a valve for said opening comprising a U-shaped member pivotally mounted, one arm of said member normally closing said opening, means engaging the bight of said member and urging closing movement of said valve, and a weight on the other arm of said valve to assist opening of the valve incidental to shaking.
2. A shaker of the class described having a dispensing opening, a valve comprising a U-shaped member and having an arm normally closing said opening, spring means engaging the bight of said member and urging closing movement of the valve, and another arm on said member having a Weight adjacent its free end to assist the opening of the valve through shaking.
3. A shaker of the class described having a dispensing opening, a valve comprising a U-shaped member and having an arm normally closing said opening, spring means engaging the bight of said member and urging closing movement of the valve, and another arm on said member having a Weight adjacent its free end to assist the opening of the valve through shaking, the second mentioned arm being longer than the first mentioned arm and disposed substantially parallel thereto.
4. A shaker of the class described having a dispensing opening, a valve having an arm normally closing said opening, spring means urging closing movement of the valve, an arm on said valve having a weight adjacent its free end to assist the opening of the valve through shaking, a housing journaling the valve, said spring being connected to the valve, and said housing having a plurality of portions engageable by the other end of the spring.
5. A shaker of the class described having a dispensing opening, a valve having an arm normally closing said opening, spring means urging ciosing movement of the valve, an arm on said valve having a weight adjacent its free end to assist the opening of the valve through shaking, a housing journaling the valve, said spring being connected to the valve, and said housing having a plurality of portions engageable by the other end of the spring, said housing adjacent said portions having an opening communicating with all of said portions.
