My invention relates to book ends and has for its object to provide a book end which can be cheaply constructed of wire or other suitable material.

A further object of the inventionis to provide a book end which can .be covered with an ornamented material, such as tapestry or other similar fabric or sheet, and a still further object of the invention is to provide such a book end which 10 when in use will not occupy any appreciable space beyond that occupied by the books that are supported thereby.

It is also a purpose of the invention to provide a book end which can be sold in a blank form so that the purchaser can make or purchase a desired design of ornamented material and sew or attach the same to the blank in an easy and simple manner.

As shown in the accompanying drawing:-

Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating in a completed form a book end constructed in accordance with my invention.

Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the frame therefor.

Figure 3 is a side view thereof in central vertical section.

Figure 4 is a perspective View illustrating a modified form of my invention.

Figure 5 is a view illustrating the manner in 39 which my improved book end is used to support a row of books.

My improved book end is constructed by means of a wire 5, of a suitable material, which is bent to form a rectangular frame. This frame is then bent to an L-shaped form having comers 6-6,

40 forms the corner edge of said frame. The ends of the wire 5 are abutted and secured together at the point H) in any suitable manner.

My improved book end is used, to support a row of books Illa in an upright position upon a table or flat surface Ila, by placing one at each end of the row, so that the horizontal portion 1 will extend underneath the books at each end of the row. The vertical portion will then support the said books in a vertical position as clearly illustrated in Figure 5 of the drawing.

When it is desired to ornament the said book end with an appropriate design, a covering II, which may be ornamental, is secured to the said book end by wrapping the edge of the covering around the edges of the frames and sewing the same thereon by means of a thread I2 which may be over-stitched around the wire which forms the frame in the manner clearly illustrated in Figures 1 and 3 of the drawing. If desired, a backing 13 may be used for the ornamental covering, to form a reinforcement for the said covering and preferably, this backing may consist of a flannel material which is sewed on to the frame together with the covering.

I claim:

1. A book end of the character described comprising an L-shaped frame constructed of wire, a sheet forming a lining on said frame and a sheet sewed to said frame and forming a covering over said lining.

2. A book end of the character described comprising a frame formed of a single length of wire, the said frame having side portions and end portions and being bent to form an L-shaped structure, the ends of said wire being butted together at one of said end portions, and a bar extending across said frame between the corners of said L-shaped structure to retain the side portions thereof in spaced relation to each other.
