The injection molded facepiece has a sealing portion that is adapted to form a seal at least partially around the user's mouth and nose region. The injection molded facepiece defines one or more vents positioned below the sealing portion, wherein the one or more vents are arranged to direct exhaled air and moisture in a generally downward direction and away from the user's eyes when the balaclava is worn.
Description
- The embodiments generally relate to the field of balaclavas and similar cold weather covers.
- Balaclavas and similar cold weather covers commonly include fabric such as neoprene fabric to cover at least a user's mouth and nose region. However, such fabric can be water absorbent which is undesirable in cold weather as water can freeze inside the fabric and draw body heat from a user.
- Other cold weather covers, such as snowmobile helmets, can have non-fabric facepieces that do not provide a seal around at least a user's mouth and nose region, resulting in the condensation of moisture or water vapor in undesired locations inside the helmet.
- This summary is provided to introduce a variety of concepts in a simplified form that is further disclosed in the detailed description of the embodiments. This summary is not intended to identify key or essential inventive concepts of the claimed subject matter, nor is it intended for determining the scope of the claimed subject matter.
- In general, the disclosed balaclava can include a head cover attachable to an injection molded facepiece that covers at least a user's mouth and nose region. The facepiece can include a sealing portion that is adapted to form a seal at least around the user's mouth and nose region. The facepiece can define one or more vents positioned below the sealing portion of the facepiece, wherein the one or more vents are arranged to direct exhaled air and moisture in a generally downward direction and away from the user's eyes when the balaclava is worn. Thus, the balaclava can prevent exhaled air and moisture from fogging eyewear.

Thefacepiece 200 can have a set 218 ofholes 220 in oneside 222 thereof for receiving a first corresponding set of pins (e.g., 304 inFIG. 3A ) of a fastener (e.g., 110 inFIG. 1A, 300 inFIG. 3A ), and another set ofholes 218 in theother side 224 for receiving a second corresponding set of pins of another fastener. - Referring to
FIG. 2D , thenarrower portion 204 is recessed to accommodate a user's nose region. Thetubular portion 206 can define one ormore vents 226 at anend 228 thereof. - Referring to
FIGS. 3A and 3B , afastener 300 for attaching a side (e.g., 222, 224 inFIG. 2B ) of a facepiece (e.g., 104 inFIG. 1A, 200 inFIGS. 2A-2D ) to a head cover (e.g., 102 inFIG. 1A ) is shown. Thefastener 300 can include a set ofpins 304 havingheads 306, wherein thepins 304 are attached along a length of astrip 302. Thepins 304 extend from thestrip 302 in the same direction. - Referring to
FIG. 4 , ahead cover 402 of abalaclava 400 can be attached to aside 416 of afacepiece 404 by insertingheads 412 of a set ofpins 418 of afastener 406 through a corresponding set ofholes 410 in thehead cover 402 and through another corresponding set ofholes 408 in thefacepiece 404. Thearrow 414 indicates directional movement of thefastener 406 toward theholes 410 in the head cover and theholes 408 in thefacepiece 404. The size of theheads 412, the size of theholes 408, and the size of theholes 410 are selected so that thehead cover 402 and thefacepiece 404 restrain theheads 412 and prevent theheads 412 from slipping out of theholes 408 in thefacepiece 404 and theholes 410 in thehead cover 402. As the material in thehead cover 402 and thefacepiece 404 can be elastic, the 408 and 410 can be made smaller to better restrain theholes heads 412 and to better attach theside 416 of thefacepiece 404 to thehead cover 402. The other side of the facepiece (e.g., 222 inFIG. 2B ) can be attached to thehead cover 402 with anotherfastener 406. When the balaclava is worn, a user can pull either side of thefacepiece 404 away from their face by simply removing one of thefasteners 406 and reattaching thefacepiece 404 later if desired. - The following description of variants is only illustrative of components, elements, acts, products, and methods considered to be within the scope of the invention and are not in any way intended to limit such scope by what is specifically disclosed or not expressly set forth.
