In some embodiments, the aerosol-generating material may comprise an “amorphous solid”, which may alternatively be referred to as a “monolithic solid” (i.e. non-fibrous). In some embodiments, the amorphous solid may be a dried gel. The amorphous solid is a solid material that may retain some fluid, such as liquid, within it.

- the aerosol-former material can be another material as described herein or a combination thereof.
- the aerosol-former material has been found to improve the sensory performance of the article 1 , by helping to transfer compounds such as flavor compounds from the aerosol-generating material 2 to the consumer.
- an issue with adding such aerosol-former materials to the aerosol-generating material 2 within an article 1 for use in a non-combustible aerosol provision system can be that, when the aerosol-generating material 2 is aerosolized upon heating, it can increase the mass of aerosol which is delivered by the article 1 . This increased mass can maintain a higher temperature as it passes through the mouth end section 3 .
- the aerosol transfers heat into the mouth end section 3 and this warms the outer surface of the mouth end section 3 , including the area that contacts the user's lips during use.
- the temperature of the mouth end section 3 and/or the aerosol temperature can be higher than a user may be accustomed to when smoking, for instance, conventional cigarettes. Therefore, it is desirable to reduce the temperature of the aerosol to prevent the mouth end section 3 from becoming warmer than would normally be the case.
- the mouth end section 3 comprises a ventilation area 5 through which air is drawn into the mouth end section 3 .
- Air drawn into the mouth end section 3 through the ventilation region 5 acts to cool and reduce the temperature of the mouth end segment 3 .
- the ventilation area 5 is configured such that when the mouth end section 3 is placed between a user's lips, and an aerosol generated by the aerosol-generating material 2 is drawn into the user's mouth through the tubular element 4 and mouth end section 3 , air is drawn into the mouth end section 3 through the ventilation area 5 to cool the mouth end section 3 .
- the ventilation area 5 comprises a porous wrapper 6 wrapped around the mouth end section 3 .
- the porous wrapper 6 allows air to enter the mouth end section 3 to cool the mouth end section 3 .
- the porous wrapper 6 is configured to be partially blocked by a user's lips to control the amount of air entering the mouth end section 3 through the ventilation area 5 . Therefore, the further the user's lips are positioned along the mouth end section 3 from the proximal end of the article 1 , the less air is able to enter the mouth end section 3 through the porous wrapper 6 of the ventilation area 5 .
- the wrapped mouth end section 3 and the tubular element 4 are joined by a porous wrapper 7 , such as a porous plug wrap.
- the porous wrapper 7 connects the components together and allows air to enter the mouth end section 3 through the ventilation area 5 .
- the aerosol-generating material 2 is joined to the wrapped tubular element 4 and mouth end section 3 by a wrapper 8 , such as a tipping paper.
- the tipping paper 8 covers the tubular element 4 and extends over a portion of the aerosol-generating material 2 and a portion of the mouth end section 3 . Therefore, the porous wrapper 7 is exposed at a proximal end of the article 1 to facilitate air entering the mouth end section 3 through the porous wrapper 6 of the ventilation area 5 .

- the tubular element 4 comprises a ventilation area 9 configured such that the aerosol flowing through the tubular element 4 from the aerosol-generating material 2 mixes with air drawn into the tubular element 4 via the ventilation area 10 . Therefore, the aerosol flowing through the article 1 is first cooled in the tubular element 4 by mixing with air drawn into the tubular element 4 via the ventilation area 9 prior to entering the mouth end section 3 . This reduces the temperature of the mouth end section 3 which is further cooled by air drawn into the mouth end section 3 via the ventilation area 5 . It is to be appreciated that the tubular element 4 may not comprise a ventilation area 9 and that the ventilation area 5 in the mouth end section 3 may be enough alone to cool the mouth end section 3 .

- In some embodiments, the non-combustible aerosol provision system is a powered non-combustible aerosol provision system, and the non-combustible aerosol provision device for use with the non-combustible aerosol provision system is an electronic cigarette, also known as a vaping device or electronic nicotine delivery system (END), although the presence of nicotine in the aerosol-generating material is not essential.
- In some embodiments, the non-combustible aerosol provision system is an aerosol-generating material heating system, also known as a heat-not-burn system. An example of such a system is a tobacco heating system.
- In some embodiments, the non-combustible aerosol provision system is a hybrid system to generate aerosol using a combination of aerosol-generating materials, one or a plurality of which may be heated. Each of the aerosol-generating materials may be, for example, in the form of a solid, liquid or gel and may or may not contain nicotine. In some embodiments, the hybrid system comprises a liquid or gel aerosol-generating material and a solid aerosol-generating material. The solid aerosol-generating material may comprise, for example, a tobacco or a non-tobacco product.
- In some embodiments, the disclosure relates to consumables comprising aerosol-generating material. The consumables are configured for use with non-combustible aerosol provision device of the invention. These consumables are generally referred to as articles throughout the disclosure.
- In some embodiments, the non-combustible aerosol provision device, of the non-combustible aerosol provision system of the invention, may comprise a power source and a controller. The power source may, for example, be an electric power source or an exothermic power source. In some embodiments, the exothermic power source comprises a carbon substrate that may be energised so as to distribute power in the form of heat to an aerosol-generating material or to a heat transfer material in proximity to the exothermic power source.
- In some embodiments, the non-combustible aerosol provision device comprises an area for receiving the article such as an aperture into which the article may be inserted for use with the device.

- In the figures described herein, like reference numerals are used to illustrate equivalent features, articles or components.
-
FIG. 1 illustrates anarticle 1 according to an embodiment of the invention. Thearticle 1 comprises aerosol-generatingmaterial 2 in the form of a rod at a distal end of the article, and amouth end section 3 at the opposite or proximal end. Atubular element 4 is located between the aerosol-generatingmaterial 2 and themouth end section 3. The aerosol-generatingmaterial 2, thetubular element 4 and themouth end section 3 are in longitudinal alignment along the longitudinal axis of thearticle 1. Themouth end section 3 is formed from a fibrous material. Optionally, the fibrous material is a filamentary tow such as cellulose acetate. Thearticle 1 may further comprise a filtration section (not shown) located between themouth end section 3 and thetubular element 4. The filtration section is formed from a fibrous material. Optionally, the fibrous material is a filamentary tow such as cellulose acetate. - The aerosol-generating
material 2 may contain an aerosol-former material such as glycerol. In alternative examples, the aerosol-former material can be another material as described herein or a combination thereof. The aerosol-former material has been found to improve the sensory performance of thearticle 1, by helping to transfer compounds such as flavor compounds from the aerosol-generatingmaterial 2 to the consumer. However, an issue with adding such aerosol-former materials to the aerosol-generatingmaterial 2 within anarticle 1 for use in a non-combustible aerosol provision system can be that, when the aerosol-generatingmaterial 2 is aerosolized upon heating, it can increase the mass of aerosol which is delivered by thearticle 1. This increased mass can maintain a higher temperature as it passes through themouth end section 3. As it passes through themouth end section 3, the aerosol transfers heat into themouth end section 3 and this warms the outer surface of themouth end section 3, including the area that contacts the user's lips during use. The temperature of themouth end section 3 and/or the aerosol temperature can be higher than a user may be accustomed to when smoking, for instance, conventional cigarettes. Therefore, it is desirable to reduce the temperature of the aerosol to prevent themouth end section 3 from becoming warmer than would normally be the case. - In embodiments of the invention, the
mouth end section 3 comprises aventilation area 5 through which air is drawn into themouth end section 3. Air drawn into themouth end section 3 through theventilation region 5 acts to cool and reduce the temperature of themouth end segment 3. Theventilation area 5 is configured such that when themouth end section 3 is placed between a user's lips, and an aerosol generated by the aerosol-generatingmaterial 2 is drawn into the user's mouth through thetubular element 4 andmouth end section 3, air is drawn into themouth end section 3 through theventilation area 5 to cool themouth end section 3. - The
ventilation area 5 comprises aporous wrapper 6 wrapped around themouth end section 3. Theporous wrapper 6 allows air to enter themouth end section 3 to cool themouth end section 3. During use of thearticle 1, theporous wrapper 6 is configured to be partially blocked by a user's lips to control the amount of air entering themouth end section 3 through theventilation area 5. Therefore, the further the user's lips are positioned along themouth end section 3 from the proximal end of thearticle 1, the less air is able to enter themouth end section 3 through theporous wrapper 6 of theventilation area 5. - As seen in
FIG. 1 , the wrappedmouth end section 3 and thetubular element 4 are joined by a porous wrapper 7, such as a porous plug wrap. The porous wrapper 7 connects the components together and allows air to enter themouth end section 3 through theventilation area 5. The aerosol-generatingmaterial 2 is joined to the wrappedtubular element 4 andmouth end section 3 by awrapper 8, such as a tipping paper. The tippingpaper 8 covers thetubular element 4 and extends over a portion of the aerosol-generatingmaterial 2 and a portion of themouth end section 3. Therefore, the porous wrapper 7 is exposed at a proximal end of thearticle 1 to facilitate air entering themouth end section 3 through theporous wrapper 6 of theventilation area 5. - Alternatively, the
wrappers 6, 7 may be regular non-porous wrappers and theventilation area 5 may comprise a perforation pattern in thewrappers 6, 7 to allow air to enter themouth end section 3 through theventilation area 5. The perforation pattern may comprise at least one hole configured to allow air to enter themouth end section 3. Optionally, the perforation pattern could comprise a plurality of holes equally spaced around the circumference of themouth end section 3. The at least one hole could also be a slot extending in a direction along the length of themouth end section 3 such. The slot may be configured to be partially blocked by a user's lips during use of thearticle 1 to control the amount of air entering themouth end section 3 through theventilation region 5. Therefore, the further the user's lips are positioned along themouth end section 3 from the proximal end of thearticle 1, the less air is able to enter themouth end section 3 through theventilation area 5. - Additionally, the
tubular element 4 comprises aventilation area 9 configured such that the aerosol flowing through thetubular element 4 from the aerosol-generatingmaterial 2 mixes with air drawn into thetubular element 4 via theventilation area 10. Therefore, the aerosol flowing through thearticle 1 is first cooled in thetubular element 4 by mixing with air drawn into thetubular element 4 via theventilation area 9 prior to entering themouth end section 3. This reduces the temperature of themouth end section 3 which is further cooled by air drawn into themouth end section 3 via theventilation area 5. It is to be appreciated that thetubular element 4 may not comprise aventilation area 9 and that theventilation area 5 in themouth end section 3 may be enough alone to cool themouth end section 3. -
FIG. 2 illustrates anarticle 1 according to another embodiment of the invention. Here the tippingpaper 8 covers thetubular element 4 andmouth end section 3 and extends over a portion of the aerosol-generating material and theventilation area 5 comprises aperforation pattern 10 in thetipping paper 8. Theventilation area 5 comprises at least one hole configured to allow air to enter themouth end section 3. Optionally, theventilation area 5 comprises a plurality of holes equally spaced around the circumference of themouth end section 3. Alternatively, the at least one hole may be a slot. The major dimension of the slot extends in a direction along the length of themouth end section 3 such that the slot is configured to be partially blocked by a user's lips during use of thearticle 1 to control the amount of air entering themouth end section 3 through theventilation region 5. Therefore, the further the user's lips are positioned along themouth end section 3 from the proximal end of thearticle 1, the less air is able to enter themouth end section 3 through theporous wrapper 6 of theventilation area 5. Theperforation pattern 10 may be asplit 10 in thewrapper 8 which exposes the porous wrapper 7. Therefore, the porous wrapper 7 is exposed at a proximal end of thearticle 1 to facilitate air entering themouth end section 3 through theporous wrapper 6 of theventilation area 5. - Alternatively, the
wrappers 6, 7 may be regular non-porous wrappers and the perforation pattern or split 10 in thewrapper 8 may extend through thewrappers 6, 7 as well. - As described above, the article may comprise a filtration section located between the
tubular element 4 and themouth end section 3. -
FIG. 3 illustrates anarticle 1 according to another embodiment of the invention. Here, the 6, 7 and 8 are regular non-porous wrappers. Thewrappers wrapper 8 is a tipping paper which extends over the entire length of the mouth end section. The 6, 7 and 8 are pre-perforated with awrappers perforation pattern 10 to allow air to enter themouth end section 3 through theventilation area 5. The 6, 7 and 8 may be electro-perforated to create thewrappers perforation pattern 10 in the 6, 7 and 8. Alternatively, thewrappers wrappers 6 and 7 may be porous and only thewrapper 8 is non-porous and comprises theperforation pattern 10. -
FIG. 4 illustrates anarticle 1 according to another embodiment of the invention. Themouth end section 3 comprises at least onechannel 11 extending in an axial direction along the length of themouth end section 3. Optionally, themouth end section 3 comprises a plurality ofchannels 11 equally spaced around the circumference of themouth end section 3. Each of the plurality of holes/slots in theventilation area 5 is aligned with a correspondingchannel 11 in themouth end section 3. The aerosol flowing along thearticle 1, through thetubular element 4 and into themouth end section 3, flows in a path along thechannels 11 in themouth end section 3. By aligning the plurality of holes/slots with the plurality ofchannels 11 in themouth end section 3, the cooling of aerosol with ventilation air is improved. - As described above, the article may comprise a filtration section located between the
tubular element 4 and themouth end section 3. -
FIG. 5 illustrates method steps of a method of manufacturing an article according to an embodiment of the invention. The method comprises a first step S1 which involves proving an aerosol-generating material and a mouth end section. The second step S2 comprises positioning a tubular element between the aerosol generating material and the mouth end section. The third step S3 involves providing a ventilation area in the mouth end section. - The various embodiments described herein are presented only to assist in understanding and teaching the claimed features.
