Abstract
A system for protecting cards may include, but is not limited to: a sleeve portion including: a first sleeve panel; a second sleeve panel, and a sleeve perimeter portion, wherein the sleeve perimeter portion retains the first sleeve panel and the second sleeve panel in a spaced-apart configuration defining a sleeve slot; and a cap portion configured to be removably coupled to the card sleeve so as to at least partially cover the sleeve slot.
Description
- The present application claims priority under 35 U.S.C. § 119/120 to: U.S. patent application Ser. No. 17/196,003, entitled CARD PROTECTION SYSTEM, filed Mar. 9, 2021, naming Steven J. Anderson as inventor; and U.S. patent application Ser. No. 29/899,847, filed Aug. 14, 2023, naming Steven J. Anderson as inventor, which are incorporated herein by reference in their entirety to the extent not inconsistent herewith.
- The present invention generally relates to a system for protecting cards (e.g. collectible cards), and, more particularly, to a protective sleeve and cap system configured to fully enclose a card within a protective sleeve.
- A system for protecting cards may include, but is not limited to: a sleeve portion including: a first sleeve panel; a second sleeve panel, and a sleeve perimeter portion, wherein the sleeve perimeter portion retains the first sleeve panel and the second sleeve panel in a spaced-apart configuration defining a sleeve slot; and a cap portion configured to be removably coupled to the card sleeve so as to at least partially cover the sleeve slot.

FIGS. 1 through 15 , a card sleeve andcap system 100 is shown. - Referring to
FIG. 1 , thesystem 100 may include asleeve 101 and acap 102. Thesleeve 101 and thecap 102 may be constructed of any materials which will not cause damage to a paper orcardboard card 103 such as rigid or semi-rigid plastics. Thesleeve 101 and thecap 102 may be constructed of acid-free (e.g., does not include polyvinylchloride) plastics such as polypropylene. Following insertion of acard 103 into a slot defined by thesleeve 101, thecap 102 may be removably coupled (e.g. frictionally or mechanically coupled) to thesleeve 101 to cover the slot into to retain and protect thecard 103 therein. - The
sleeve 101 may have a rectilinear perimeter (e.g., a rectangular or square configuration) dimensioned to approximate the size of thecard 103 to be retained within thesleeve 101. Thesleeve 101 may include afirst sleeve panel 104 and asecond sleeve panel 105. Thesleeve 101 may further include one or more sleeve perimeter portions 106 (e.g. afirst side portion 106A, asecond side portion 106B, and abottom portion 106C). Thesleeve perimeter portions 106 may be conjoined substantially proximate to their respective ends to create a three-sided frame. For example, thesleeve perimeter portions 106 may be formed in a substantially continuous manner (e.g. via thermoplastic molding), or via assembly from a separatefirst side portion 106A,second side portion 106B, and/orbottom portion 106C which are coupled together via heat sealing, adhesive, and the like. - The
first sleeve panel 104 and thesecond sleeve panel 105 may be coupled to thesleeve perimeter portions 106 along three sides of thefirst sleeve panel 104 and thesecond sleeve panel 105. Thefirst sleeve panel 104 and thesecond sleeve panel 105 may be coupled to thesleeve perimeter portions 106 via any number of mechanisms including, but not limited to: heat sealing, adhesive, interlocking structures (e.g. tongue-and-groove), and the like. - The
sleeve perimeter portions 106 and thefirst sleeve panel 104 and thesecond sleeve panel 105 may be coupled so as to retain thefirst sleeve panel 104 and thesecond sleeve panel 105 in spaced-apart configuration to form aslot 107 between thefirst sleeve panel 104 and thesecond sleeve panel 105 into which acard 103 may be inserted. - Similarly, the
cap 102 may include afirst cap panel 108 and asecond cap panel 109. Thecap 102 may further include anedge portion 110. Thefirst cap panel 108 and thesecond cap panel 109 may be coupled to theedge portion 110 substantially along three sides of thefirst cap panel 108 and thesecond cap panel 109. Thefirst cap panel 108 and thesecond cap panel 109 may be coupled to thesleeve perimeter portions 106 via any number of mechanisms including, but not limited to: heat sealing, adhesive, interlocking structures (e.g. tongue-and-groove), and the like. - The
edge portion 110, thefirst cap panel 108 and thesecond cap panel 109 may be coupled so as to retain thefirst cap panel 108 and thesecond cap panel 109 in spaced-apart configuration to form aslot 111 between thefirst cap panel 108 thesecond cap panel 109. As shown inFIGS. 2A-2B , following insertion of acard 103 into theslot 107 of the sleeve 101 (as shown inFIG. 1 ), atop portion 112 of thesleeve 101 may be inserted into theslot 111 of thecap 102 to enclose thecard 103 therein. - Specifically, in one embodiment, the
edge portion 110, thefirst cap panel 108 and thesecond cap panel 109 may be dimensioned such that the portions of theedge portion 110, thefirst cap panel 108 and thesecond cap panel 109 frictionally engage thetop portion 112 of thesleeve 101. For example,FIG. 3 shows a top, cross-sectional view of a coupledsleeve 101 andcap 102 along an axis A-A as depicted inFIG. 2B . As shown inFIG. 3 , an interior surface of theedge portion 110, an interior surface of thefirst cap panel 108, and/or an interior surface of the second cap panel 109 (e.g., interior surface 113) may frictionally engage an exterior surface of thefirst sleeve panel 104, an exterior surface of thesecond sleeve panel 105, and/or an exterior surface of the sleeve perimeter portions 106 (e.g. exterior surface 114). - Further, referring again to
FIGS. 2A and 2B , thesleeve perimeter portions 106 may have one or morearcuate sections 115 at or near thetop portion 112 of thesleeve 101. Further, thecap 102 may define correspondingarcuate sections 116. Thearcuate sections 115 and thearcuate sections 116 may be dimensioned such that, upon insertion of thesleeve 101 into theslot 111 of thecap 102, thearcuate sections 115 may be brought into contact with thearcuate sections 116 with thearcuate sections 115 exerting an at least partially lateral force on thearcuate sections 116 to further enhance the frictional interaction between the respective interacting surfaces. - Referring to
FIGS. 4-5B , in another embodiment, in contrast to the embodiment shown inFIGS. 1-3 , end sections of theedge portion 110 of thecap 102 may not extend down along the edges of thefirst cap panel 108 and thesecond cap panel 109. Rather, thefirst cap panel 108 and thesecond cap panel 109 may only be coupled to theedge portion 110 along their top edges such that acap 102 having an, open ended, U-shaped channel is formed by theedge portion 110, thefirst cap panel 108 and thesecond cap panel 109. - Referring to
FIG. 6 , a top, cross-sectional view of a coupledsleeve 101 andcap 102 is shown along an axis B-B as depicted inFIG. 5B . As shown inFIG. 6 , an interior surface of thefirst cap panel 108, and/or an interior surface of the second cap panel 109 (e.g., interior surface 113) may frictionally engage an exterior surface of thefirst sleeve panel 104, an exterior surface of thesecond sleeve panel 105, and/or an exterior surface of the sleeve perimeter portions 106 (e.g. exterior surface 114). - Referring to
FIGS. 7-9 , in another embodiment, thecap 102 may not include thefirst cap panel 108 and thesecond cap panel 109. Rather thecap 102 may include aninsert portion 117 coupled to theedge portion 110. Theinsert portion 117 may be dimensioned such that it can fit within theslot 107 of thesleeve 101. An underside surface of theedge portion 110 of thecap 102 may contact the top edges of thefirst sleeve panel 104, thesecond sleeve panel 105, and/or thesleeve perimeter portions 106 of thesleeve 101 so as to enclose thecard 103 therein. - Referring to
FIG. 9 , a top, cross-sectional view of a coupledsleeve 101 andcap 102 is shown along an axis C-C as depicted inFIG. 8B . As shown inFIG. 9 ,insert portion 117 may inserted intoslot 107 so as to frictionally engage an interior surface of thefirst sleeve panel 104, an interior surface of thesecond sleeve panel 105, and/or an interior surface of the sleeve perimeter portions 106 (e.g. interior surface 118). - Referring to
FIGS. 10-12 , in another embodiment, thecap 102 may not include theedge portion 110. Rather thecap 102 may include only thefirst cap panel 108 and thesecond cap panel 109. Thefirst cap panel 108 and thesecond cap panel 109 may be coupled (e.g., heat sealed) along their perimeter edges while a bottom edge remains uncoupled to form aslot 111. Alternately, thecap 102 may be formed (e.g. molded) as a single continuous structure defining theslot 111. Thecap 102 may be dimensioned such that it may slide over thetop portion 112 of thesleeve 101. - Referring to
FIG. 12 , a top, cross-sectional view of a coupledsleeve 101 andcap 102 is shown along an axis D-D as depicted inFIG. 11B . As shown inFIG. 12 , an interior surface of the cap 102 (e.g., interior surface 113) may frictionally engage an exterior surface of thefirst sleeve panel 104, an exterior surface of thesecond sleeve panel 105, and/or an exterior surface of the sleeve perimeter portions 106 (e.g. exterior surface 114) - Referring to
FIGS. 13-14B , in another embodiment, thecap 102 may include anedge portion 110 having extendedprojection portions 119. Further,sleeve perimeter portions 106 of thesleeve 101 may include one ormore recesses 120 dimensioned to receive and retain theprojection portions 119 upon their insertion. - Referring to
FIGS. 15-20 , thecap 102 and thesleeve 101 may be joined via ahinge 121. - For example, as shown in
FIGS. 15A-15C , thecap 102 may define atab portion 122. In one embodiment, thetab portion 122 may define an aperture 123 (e.g., a through-hole). Thesleeve perimeter portion 106 of thesleeve 101 may define a corresponding aperture 124 (e.g., a though-hole). Further, a fastener 125 (e.g., a pin, a screw, a bolt, etc.) may be insertable at least partially through theaperture 123 and theaperture 124 where it may be frictionally retained so as to couple thecap 102 and thesleeve 101 and define an axis ofrotation 126 around which thecap 102 may pivot relative to thesleeve 101. - In an alternate embodiment, the
hinge 121 may include a set of cooperating projections and recesses disposed in thecap 102 and thesleeve 101. For example, thetab portion 122 of thecap 102 may define a projection (e.g., a rounded or hemispherical projection) extending horizontally from the face of thetab portion 122. Thesleeve perimeter portion 106 of thesleeve 101 may include a corresponding recess (e.g., a rounded or hemispherical recess) disposed within a wall of thesleeve perimeter portion 106. Thetab portion 122 may be inserted into thesleeve perimeter portion 106 of thesleeve 101 such that the cap projection is aligned with and received within the recess of thesleeve perimeter portion 106 where it may be frictionally retained so as to couple thecap 102 and thesleeve 101 and define the axis ofrotation 126 around which thecap 102 may pivot relative to thesleeve 101sleeve 101. It will be understood that the relative configurations of the projection and recess may be reversed (e.g., thetab portion 122 of thecap 102 may define one or more recesses while thesleeve perimeter portion 106 of thesleeve 101 defines one or projections) without departing from the scope of the present disclosures. - In another example, as shown in
FIGS. 16A-16C , thehinge 121 may be a living-hinge-type coupling whereby a portion thehinge 121 is integrally formed as a continuous portion of both thecap 102 and thesleeve 101. For example, thecap 102 and thesleeve perimeter portion 106 of thesleeve 101 may be formed (e.g., injection or blow molded) as a single piece which may be subsequently coupled to thefirst sleeve panel 104 and thesecond sleeve panel 105 to form thesystem 100. - Different features, variations, and multiple different embodiments have been shown and described with various details. What has been described in this application, at times, in terms of specific embodiments, is done for illustrative purposes only and without the intent to limit or suggest that what has been conceived is only one particular embodiment or specific embodiments. Claims (18)
1. A system for protecting cards comprising:
a card sleeve including:
a first sleeve panel and a second sleeve panel cooperatively defining a top edge surface, and
a sleeve perimeter portion defining at least one arcuate corner surface;
wherein the sleeve perimeter portion retains the first sleeve panel and the second sleeve panel in a spaced-apart configuration defining a sleeve slot between the first sleeve panel and the second sleeve panel, and
wherein the at least one arcuate corner surface transitions from the top edge surface to a side surface; and
a cap portion including:
a first cap panel;
a second cap panel; and
a cap edge portion,
wherein the cap edge portion retains the first cap panel and the second cap panel in a spaced-apart configuration defining a cap slot between the first cap panel and the second cap panel dimensioned to receive at least a portion of the card sleeve, and
wherein the cap edge portion has an underside surface including a planar surface transitioning to a first arcuate surface at a first end of the planar surface; and
wherein the first arcuate surface of the cap edge portion is configured to frictionally engage the at least one arcuate corner surface of the card sleeve when the card sleeve is received in the cap slot of the cap portion.
2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:
a sleeve insert portion projecting from the underside surface, the sleeve insert portion being dimensioned to be insertable into the sleeve slot of the card sleeve.
3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the sleeve insert portion is dimensioned to at least partially frictionally engage an interior surface of the first sleeve panel or the second sleeve panel upon insertion into sleeve slot of the card sleeve.
4. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:
a hinge operably coupling the cap portion to the card sleeve.
5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the hinge includes:
at least one aperture disposed in the cap portion;
at least one aperture disposed in the card sleeve; and
at least one fastener configured to be received at least partially within the at least one aperture disposed in the cap portion and the at least one aperture disposed in the card sleeve.
6. The system of claim 4 , wherein the hinge includes:
a living hinge.
7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the living hinge includes:
a structured integrally formed by a portion of both the cap portion and the card sleeve.
8. The system of claim 4 , wherein the hinge includes:
at least one projection projecting from the cap portion;
at least one recess disposed in the card sleeve.
9. The system of claim 4 , wherein the hinge includes:
at least one recess disposed in the cap portion;
at least one projection projecting from the card sleeve.
10. The system of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the cap slot is dimensioned to frictionally engage an exterior surface of at least one of the sleeve perimeter portion, the first sleeve panel or the second sleeve panel when the card sleeve is received within the cap slot.
11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the cap edge portion is coupled to both the first cap panel and the second cap panel along at least a portion of at least three sides of the first cap panel and the second cap panel, respectively.
12. A card sleeve cap comprising:
a first cap panel;
a second cap panel; and
a cap edge portion,
wherein the cap edge portion retains the first cap panel and the second cap panel in a spaced-apart configuration defining a cap slot between the first cap panel and the second cap panel dimensioned to receive at least a portion of a card sleeve, and
wherein the cap edge portion has an underside surface including a planar surface transitioning to a first arcuate surface at a first end of the planar surface; and
wherein the first arcuate surface of the cap edge portion is configured to frictionally engage at least one arcuate corner surface of the card sleeve when the card sleeve is received in the cap slot of the card sleeve cap.
13. The card sleeve cap of claim 12 , further comprising:
a sleeve insert portion projecting from the underside surface, the sleeve insert portion being dimensioned to be insertable into the sleeve slot of the card sleeve.
14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the sleeve insert portion is dimensioned to at least partially frictionally engage an interior surface of the first sleeve panel or the second sleeve panel upon insertion into sleeve slot of the card sleeve.
15. A card sleeve cap comprising:
a cap edge portion having an underside surface including a planar surface transitioning to a first arcuate surface at a first end of the planar surface; and
wherein the first arcuate surface of the cap edge portion is configured to frictionally engage at least one arcuate corner surface of a card sleeve when the card sleeve cap is applied to the card sleeve.
16. The card sleeve cap of claim 15 , further comprising:
a sleeve insert portion projecting from the underside surface, the sleeve insert portion being dimensioned to be insertable into the sleeve slot of the card sleeve.
17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the sleeve insert portion is dimensioned to at least partially frictionally engage an interior surface of the first sleeve panel or the second sleeve panel upon insertion into sleeve slot of the card sleeve.
18. The system of claim 15 , further comprising:
a hinge operably coupling the cap portion to the card sleeve.
